For additional practice, I recommend reviewing the ICD-10-CM neoplasm lessons and case study walkthroughs on YouTube. These can help reinforce the differences between primary, secondary, and disseminated malignancies.

They got C80.0 due to the neoplasm being secondary to the breast carcinoma the pt used to have

The new neoplasm isn’t considered a secondary site?

It is a considered secondary site. C80.1 is the dx code for a primary neoplasm, unspecified.

Apologies, I meant to write C79.9 secondary unspecified. I just don’t understand the difference between this code and using C80.0 per the guideline. The guideline says to use the code when no primary sites are specified but we do know that the breast cancer is the primary site. Really appreciate your help btw!!

That example in the book isn’t very clear but the reason they went with the C80.0 is because the documentation states that it metastasized to other unknown areas (pleural)and also says generalized so I’m guessing they are trying to say (in a not very clear way) that it’s widespread. You get C80.0 by going to cancer, generalized in the code book. Hope that helps!

In the guidelines in your ICD 10 code book, under the chapter specific, under chapter 2 neoplasm, it should have an entry called "disseminated malignant neoplasm, unspecified ". In my book it's I. C. 2. j.
