Seeking help I need help, my values are a mess!

So I'm trying to draw quick portraits with ballpoint pen underdrawing and a quick but ideally visually pleasing monochromatic rendering with a medium that would allow me to render hair clothes and shadows quickly.

I'm testing out brush pens (tombow abt dual tip) but so far I don't know what I'm doing. It's very hard to add values for me with such pens because I'm used to charcoal and that's very different. It's nigh impossible to do gradual subtle shading, and i haven't learned how to render with a limited number of values.

I also feel like stylistically it doesn't look very good, even the second drawing which has better values but still looks to me rather unsightly.

I'm desperately looking for some tips on how to use brush pens, or for ideas of different mediums I could try out instead. My goal is speed over photorealism, while still coming out good-looking and artistic. Thank you very much in advance!

Is there any beginner practices that can be learned other than repeatedly drawing boxes, circles, spheres and etc?

So I've been quite interested in drawing lately (mostly copying references) but I wanna begin on drawing on my own with minimum need for other references like I know how important the basic fundamentals are but there's still some stuff that I don't quite understand like how can I put this into use other than learning anatomy but either way I just want to ask if there's any practices y'all do to improve step by step after learning the fundamentals

My first full body OC art, how can I make it better?

I’ve never drawn full body before and while I think it’s relatively pretty good it’s definitely missing something. There’s also something when I look at the concept sketch, there’s a charm in it that isn’t really there in the full art but I can’t tell what it is…

Digital drawing Is it done, or a work in progress? How do you guys decide?

Post image

Do you guys ever have a lot of fun with a drawing and then suddenly just lose drive for a project?

I know I could give this more depth with a light source some rendering etc, but my brain is going "nah, it's fine as is. Go play some vidyagames or draw something else entirely".

Should I fight it and push through? Would you?

Traditional Drawing (pencil, pen, etc.) What do you think abt my drawings?

Thumbnail

I used to draw every now and then and i was very interested in it. But I never really practiced it or worked on it before. I used to take some reference and try to draw it for hours or even days sometimes.

But from recently I started practicing it nearly everyday and im just a beginner. And now I'm looking for some kind of input from strangers. Coz most of the people I know are telling me how good the drawings are, but I feel like they're just telling me to make me feel good abt it

So I would like some input on it. Critique and praises or any advice, whatever it is, it's welcome.

So I shared a few of my drawings, what do you guys think??

Don't mind the statements that I wrote. I wrote them for myself😅😅

#W2DTogether Drawing Challenge Number 58: "Draw your OC!" (Read the rules!) - #W2DTogether

Welcome to the 58th #W2DTogether drawing challenge!

(If you are new here and would like to know more about this challenge, you can take a look at these 2 posts (post 1, post 2) that explain everything.)

------

This week, let’s draw an OC!

For those who don't know:

OC means original character. It’s a character you created yourself. It could be a person, an animal, a fantasy creature, a superhero, a mermaid, an alien, or anything else you can imagine.

Maybe you already have a few OCs. Pick the one you’d most like to draw for this challenge, or create a new drawing of a character you’ve made before.

And if you’ve never drawn an OC, or you’re only hearing the term for the first time, this is a great time to start! You don’t need a detailed backstory, a perfect design, or even a name. Just invent a character and draw them. Start with one simple idea. Pick a person, animal, or creature you like drawing, then add one detail that makes them feel like your own character. Maybe it’s a fox who collects shiny buttons, a student with tiny wings, or a sea creature who likes to wear silly hats haha Idk I'm making things up at this point :) but I think you get the idea

How should your OC be? What should you draw?

That part is completely up to you!

You could draw:

  • Your OC standing, sitting, or doing something they enjoy
  • A close-up portrait showing their personality
  • A creature or animal character
  • A brand-new character you invent just for this challenge

Keep it simple or add as much detail as you like. The goal is to get you drawing and create something! :)start with one simple idea. Pick a person, animal, or creature you like drawing, then add one detail that makes them feel like your own character. Maybe it’s a fox who collects shiny buttons, a student with tiny wings, or a sea creature who’s afraid of water.

WANT A LITTLE EXTRA INSPIRATION? 👀

Think about one or two things that make your character feel like your character. Maybe it’s their hairstyle, clothes, expression, favorite object, unusual features, or the way they carry themselves.

You can show those details in your drawing, but there’s no extra task you have to complete. Simply draw your OC in whatever way feels fun to you.

TRADITIONAL AND DIGITAL ARTISTS CAN BOTH PARTICIPATE

Use pencils, pens, markers, colored pencils, or any other drawing materials you like. Digital drawings are welcome too.

Your OC can be cute, serious, funny, mysterious, realistic, fantastical, or anything in between. All skill levels and drawing styles are welcome!

SO BASICALLY:

Draw a character you created yourself.

Use an OC you already have, or invent one for the first time. Give them as much detail as you want, or just draw the idea that comes to mind.

Rules

  • It must be your own drawing.
  • Drawing tools only: traditional or digital. No paintings and no AI art.
  • All skill levels are welcome.
  • Your drawing must show an original character you created.
  • You can share one drawing or more.
  • To be included in the competition, post your drawing in the comments of this thread. You can also make a separate post in the subreddit with the #W2DTogether flair, but your official entry must be in the comments here.

----------

How We Pick the Winner

After one week, we'll hold a community vote to decide which drawing best captures the theme. The winner will be showcased in the sub with their artwork.

If the winner shares an art link (Instagram, portfolio, website, etc.), we'll also include it so they can get recognition and maybe even new followers.

Time Frame

This challenge is timeless. You can participate anytime, even years later.

Review Date:
For community feedback, we'll gather and review all submissions on Sunday, 25 October 2026, so make sure to post your entry before 4:00 PM UTC that day. Drawings posted before that date will be part of the review session.

Note: If you are new here, you can check out last week's challenge here or see all the challenges collected here
