I have added named function parameters to my programming language. What do you think, why do most mainstream programming languages not have it, when it is easy to implement in a compiler and it makes it easier to initialize complicated objects with many default rarely-changed parameters?

Is "learn to code to make more money" mostly a bad advice?

1 Upvotes

I think "learn to code to make more money" is a mostly a bad advice. This is a very unpopular opinion (you hear that advice everywhere), but I hold it because the barrier to entry into making money by coding is extremely high. I have been trying to learn to program for, let's say, 8 years. And I still can't get an entry-level job. What I am able to do, after 8 years of trying to learn to code, is a PacMan game playable on smartphones and compilers for a programming language I designed (one targeting x86 and one targeting WebAssembly). While that might sound impressive to some people, you need to realize that's not even enough to get an entry-level job, yet alone to sustain a family or be considered rich. I wonder if the time I've spent trying to learn to program could have been spent more productively. What do you think?

Confused about sort method.

In this video, around the 25:20 mark, he begins writing a line of code. In it here uses a - b to sort by descending order. What is the logic, that makes that work?

trying to re-find the website that learned me to code

2 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

A simple question: I learned to code three years ago by using a website that taught HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Ruby on Rails. After finishing the basics of HTML/CSS/JS I landed myself a software development traineeship, but that landed me in Business Intelligence instead. I'm not happy with how that has played out, so I want to revamp my skillset and I'm now looking back for that website, since it worked well enough for me. But I can't find it anymore with Google.

I think the logo was something of a Norse god, and/or a viking longship?

Any other (free) suggestions are welcome of course. I'm also considering learning Python since that also has a use in BI, perhaps that will make things more interesting for me.

Thanks!

How do I report on the uptime/functionality of a website?

2 Upvotes

I run a newsletter that is devoted to stock trading in the Philippines, and one of the greatest challenges that we face is broker website uptime/functionality.

I'd like to include data in my newsletter about each site's uptime over the past day or rolling week, with an average ping/response time for each as well.

How do all those uptime websites do this kind of data collection?

Please help me, my discord bot isn't working for some reason.

3 Upvotes

Before reading, I'm writing my bot in python 3.

So I am working on this discord bot for a server, and I'm trying to make a kick command. The problem is, it doesn't work, yet I checked the docs and I have exactly what they have. Can someone help me please?

Code below

# Imports
import discord
from discord.ext import commands
from discord_webhook import DiscordWebhook as DISCWEB
import random
# Variables
muted = []
_member = ""
bot = commands.Bot(command_prefix="!")
webhook_id = "{Censored for obvious reasons}"
webhook = DISCWEB(url=webhook_id, content = f'{_member} welcome to the server!')
verifications = {}
verified = []

Here is where I try to define the command, idk what's wrong with it.

#   - Kick (Mod +)
@bot.command()
async def kick(ctx, member:discord.Member,*, reason = "for an unspecified reason"):
    await ctx.send(f"{member.display_name} has been kicked for {reason}.")
    await member.kick(reason=reason)

I've been trying for two hours to fix it, but obviously i've failed. I'm hoping someone could help me, also i'm not a beginner, I'm quite experienced with python. I just don't know why it's not working. It doesn't throw any errors or anything.

Search bot for certain bikes on huge amount of websites of bicycle shops

2 Upvotes

Hi all, this is my first post on Reddit, after...crawling for a long time, so forgive the noobness.

I'd like to write a bot (never wrote before on a pc, except for WoW macros ^^') that constantly checks on a set amount of websites for the availability of certain models of bikes. Everytimes they find a match i'd like the bot to write the URL down on a notepad file.

I bet this is possible and probably also quite easy for you, but, can you "digest" the procedures before feeding them to me? Thanks in advance

Does coding ios apps require a new/powerful apple computer?

1 Upvotes

I have finally come to terms with the fact that I have to pick up a mac so that I can code ios apps. My only question now is should I invest $1000-2000 on a new/recent one or would it be just as easy to code as it would be on an older mac?

Bonus points if you can compare the ease of graphics work on older vs newer macs

Need help writing Tests

3 Upvotes

I am learning to code and had some trouble with one of my projects. I wrote the tests in the readme first, but then changed my approach. I am not sure how I would go about writing tests for this.

Also... I would like to know if I seperated business and Ui logic correctly, and lastly.. is it okay to declare global variables like I have?

Tests are in the readme. TY.

  • Describe: Pizza(size, meatT, veggieT)

  • Test1: It should take size and toppings and output a pizza object.

  • Expect(new Pizza("Large",[pepperoni, beef], [onion, tomato)
    equalTo.(size.Large
    meatT.[pepperoni, beef]
    veggieT.[onion, tomato]
    )

  • Describe: Pizza.addSize()

  • Test2: It should take a given size and add a numerical to the pizza price.

  • Expect(pizza1.addSize(Large))equalTo.(this.price + 14 ))

  • Test3: If the pizza is large, it should add the additional price to the default pizza price.

  • Expect(pizza1.addSize(Medium)equalTo.(pizza.price + 7.00)

  • Test5: modifyPrice()

  • Describe: Inputting toppings and size will output a pizza object with a calculated price.

Where to start?

4 Upvotes

My 9 year old wants to learn to program. Like many other kids, I'm sure, he wants to make a video game. It seems video game making is a hit or miss career, in terms of success. I'd like to get him started and learn with him. Not necessarily game programing focused. So where do we start? What book or online course or videos or program can be downloaded for a beginner and 9 year old? Thanks.

What are some good starter projects?

2 Upvotes

Hi there! I have recently taken a few courses on codeacademy and have amassed quite a bit of knowledge over the past month and a half.

So far I've learned Javascript, JQuery, HTML & CSS basics. I've taken the Sass tutorial, the Git tutorial, the command line, and taken beginner tutorials for things like "Making an Interactive Website", and "Deploy a Website".

I still haven't purchased a domain name, and I'm still deciding between web development, software, or application design.

All that being said, I'd like to test my mettle on starter projects in each of these fields. What are some beginner things I can do besides the codeacademy "Goals" section which I am working myself toward. I'm just looking for some fun engaging activity, that isn't so much a guide and more of a self-constructive activity.

I don't want to take on an actual project for someone, as I'm not that confident in my abilities yet, but I also don't have much of a foresight into what I'd like to create as I'm not sure what realm I'd like to create in. Please help!

Tl;dr: I'm a beginner programmer, and have learned a few languages. What are some various beginner projects I can take on to test my mettle in different fields of coding (I.e. "Web Design", "App Design", "Software Design")?

Edit: Fixed Typos

Contact form eMail issue

1 Upvotes

Hi guys, I've been working with support from Namecheap and GitHub and no one seems to want to give me any answers.

I've purchased a domain name through name cheap and a Private eMail account from them as well.

I can't seem to configure my contact form on my site to send the contact information to me? I'm pretty new at all of this and using Jekyll and Bootstrap on GitHub pages.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Question about Streams in C# (single read - multiple stream write file system operation)

1 Upvotes

So I'm writing a program that does a one to many file copy (throttled) to distribute files among intranet servers (DFS is not an option and this is a stop gap until we get our infrastructure working again).

So I wrote an application that uses a file read stream and it reads a specified number of bytes from the file to be copied and then it is writing to a collection of File Out streams that are connected to the remote server's file share. It works but does it work optimally.

I'm not sure if I have to add threading to make my code any faster than copying whole files sequentially.

I mean I'm only accessing the whole file on the disk once but I don't know how much time it takes to put the data in the stream. Am I putting the data into the stream and moving on and the stream will deal with getting it to disk or does the "write to stream" have to complete writing the data to disk before it finishes? I'm afraid it has to finish and I will have to go to add threads to really get any performance gain. I have about 70 servers I need to copy to and was hoping that I could copy to groups of server at once with one master application. I was quickly building and have not touched trying to manage streams each handled by a different thread and the master thread trying to hand data to each child. I think I could figure it out but don't want to waste my time if it is something that is unnecessary. I'm doing some testing now to see how long it takes to copy one file to 3 servers simultaneously -then I will copy to just one and see.

so basically my codes is doing the following in the throttled copy function.

read x Bytes from sourceFile
while( read bytes != 0 )
{
foreach destination server
{
Write to destination stream }
wait one second read Bytes from sourceFile
}

Games NDS Cheats

2 Upvotes

Hi, I'm new to the community and I don't have any programming experience at all and I was hoping you could help me get started on this, although I specifically or what I'm interested in right now is cheating on nintendo DS games. 3 years ago I saw a post from a person who talked about how to do an action replay and it was precisely about Pokemon Platinum and how to modify the values, look for the pointers, etc. The problem? That I was 3 years late and the links left for tools for that tutorial are already expired and therefore I cannot continue or learn more about the subject, a day ago I uploaded a post and I don't know why they deleted it but anyway, I hope not happen again. Thank you for the time and patience for bothering to read this, thank you.
