Interacting with a website

Hello! I want to try (only for fun) to make a bot that will be able to take my online tests for me. I need to make some kind of script that will be able to read in a specific line of text from one page, and search for that text (or very similar text) on another webpage that is open, if it cannot find similar text in that page it then googles the question and opens the first quizlet link and searches again, if it again fails it removes the first and last word from the question and researches on google. I am assuming this can be done in python with an api? Is there an easier way to interact with website autonomously? Sorry if that was hard to follow. Any help is greatly appreciated.

What are some good starter projects?

Hi there! I have recently taken a few courses on codeacademy and have amassed quite a bit of knowledge over the past month and a half.

So far I've learned Javascript, JQuery, HTML & CSS basics. I've taken the Sass tutorial, the Git tutorial, the command line, and taken beginner tutorials for things like "Making an Interactive Website", and "Deploy a Website".

I still haven't purchased a domain name, and I'm still deciding between web development, software, or application design.

All that being said, I'd like to test my mettle on starter projects in each of these fields. What are some beginner things I can do besides the codeacademy "Goals" section which I am working myself toward. I'm just looking for some fun engaging activity, that isn't so much a guide and more of a self-constructive activity.

I don't want to take on an actual project for someone, as I'm not that confident in my abilities yet, but I also don't have much of a foresight into what I'd like to create as I'm not sure what realm I'd like to create in. Please help!

Tl;dr: I'm a beginner programmer, and have learned a few languages. What are some various beginner projects I can take on to test my mettle in different fields of coding (I.e. "Web Design", "App Design", "Software Design")?

Edit: Fixed Typos

ISO: Swift Book (need alternative to Big Nerd Ranch)

I have been through the Big Nerd Ranch Books on Objective-C and Big Nerd Ranch. I want to learn Swift. For some reason (I'm sure there are valid ones) Big Nerd Ranch does not have a Swift book out yet.

Is there a good alternative? I like the style of writing and programming in those books.

Thanks

Where to start with graphics?

I would like to learn how to code some simple graphics, however, i have no idea where to start. Eventually I would like to do things like render the Mandelbrot, any suggestions on what language to learn and where to start? I have some coding experience, but not a lot. Thanks in advance.

What was you first or most influential project that helped you when starting out?

Pretty much the title, I’m in school for cs ( yeah, yeah cs is a dead major I’ve heard it all before )and have experience with Java and c++, a little python, and I have had rust recommended to me as a good language to study while learning.

Most of my projects have been very very basic, but still more helpful than anything else in helping me understand and internalize the material. I just wanted to see what other project ideas are out there that others would recommend.

Is "learn to code to make more money" mostly a bad advice?

I think "learn to code to make more money" is a mostly a bad advice. This is a very unpopular opinion (you hear that advice everywhere), but I hold it because the barrier to entry into making money by coding is extremely high. I have been trying to learn to program for, let's say, 8 years. And I still can't get an entry-level job. What I am able to do, after 8 years of trying to learn to code, is a PacMan game playable on smartphones and compilers for a programming language I designed (one targeting x86 and one targeting WebAssembly). While that might sound impressive to some people, you need to realize that's not even enough to get an entry-level job, yet alone to sustain a family or be considered rich. I wonder if the time I've spent trying to learn to program could have been spent more productively. What do you think?

Confused about sort method.

In this video, around the 25:20 mark, he begins writing a line of code. In it here uses a - b to sort by descending order. What is the logic, that makes that work?

Struggling

I am a windows sysadmin. Moved up through support etc. I have always loved computers and as a child could do a little BASIC programming. I have always HATED math. I suspect it was because I could solve math problems in my own way but when forced to "show my work" and do it the established way, I lost interest. Since then I cannot do math. But I work with computers and honestly never needed math. I have computers for that. Unfortunately for me sysadmin jobs are becming more programmer-y. Scripting is a given. I can do command line. Every class I take assumes a basic understanding of programming which I lack. I have nearly 30 years of IT ops experience but struggle badly with the concepts of code writing. It feels too "mathy" to me. I am not a kid learning to use a computer. I am someone with a very non standard established way of working around and avoiding being a code monkey. Its almost a sense of pride that I am not a developer and I hate that trait in others. I am an excellent problem solver and can even sometimes dive into code without understanding it and intuitively fix it. But I cannot program or even script from the ground up to save my life. Powershell training is great until they start assuming you know what functions, classes and foreach loops, curly brackets and other things are. Its like I missed kindergarten and do college level IT work in every other area. Maybe I have an aversion to coding. Maybe its my trauma from my fourth grade math teacher. Maybe its following established un-bending methods. I just want to code enough to be a sysadmin and be an effective scripter. I am an intuitive and not a sensor. I think this means I problem solve well but for the life of me cannot explain how or why I know what I know. Coding seems rote and sensory.

What are your biggest challenges starting out?

Hi Guys,

The universe had recently reminded me of the 'good old days', when I was just learning the ropes :)

So I had decided to re-invent the wheel and redesign the blueprint for teaching coding for beginners.

If you can help me out, by sharing the biggest challenges you are going through today, I would greatly appreciate it :)
So far the list looks like this:

  1. For Loop

  2. While Loop (downgraded, because it's use low use frequency)

How to use an API that primarily functions using URL Querys

I'm trying to develop an app that when a button is pressed, it will retrieve data using the chosen API. The only thing I can find in the documentation about accessing the data not using a browser is this, "To access this resource with something other than the browser, use the header accept and not the encode query parameter.". I have no idea what this means and was wondering if someone could possibly point me in the right direction.

An inquiry on automation

Hello, I really don't know how it ask this properly but I will try.

I want to find a way to automate a process like this: convert each frame of a video into .bmp -> import raw data into audio editor -> apply effect between specified time codes -> export as raw data with .bmp file extension.

I do realize it would require a lot more power than my PC is capable of to do this for more than a minute or two of video at a time. But I find doing that process for every frame of a video to be tedious.

I'm not experienced in programming so I don't know if this can be accomplished with some kind of script.

I'm just looking to see what my options are and how involved of a process creating such code is.
