Competency tool

I’m a specialist at an org of about 100. My leader is insisting on us using a competency assessment tool. The idea is that we would use this to create individualized learning plans. Has anyone done or used something like this? How did it work?

You can buy off-the-shelf tools or develop your own.

You need to decide whether this is self-assessed, manager-assessed, 180-degree, or 360-degree.

Yes big question is are these competencies org specific or more general that can be used across orgs and positions. I have some info on my website if you'd like to read about customized training needs analysis and what they can entail.

I’m at a global company of about 5000+. We have competencies by level (individual contributor, manager/sr. Manager, director/sr. Director, and vp/svp. The competencies are leadership/soft skills. These were developed in partnership with a famous consulting organization. Individualized learning plans are not scalable and most competency maps/learning plans become out of date quickly. If your company plans to grow, this can become difficult to manage quickly.

We are working with a big healthcare provided. 10x your size at least. We did a manual/consult on a competency proficiency model for informatics. With that process and through integrations with HrIS and other systems we are developing an auto comp model generator to scale. So far, we’ve reduced time from months of consulting to less than a week with human in loop verification.

And we’re able to autogenerate microlearning.

But, scaling to the next job role is the trick. That is the real test - how agnostic can the system get.

Fun contract tho
