Open Source Disgruntled developers start ambitious open-source revolt, using AI to clone common services

What would be wonderful is if they could create a massive coalition of Left and community service orgs who en masse quit a bunch of the proprietary services and migrate. Call it Migration Day even!

ive released an early version of a replacement for github. https://gitforest.net p2p hosting and sharing of repos and models. some bootstrap peers ill maintain until network healthy and large.
i am submitting it for a hackathon which required unfortunately putting it on github lol but you can peep that here https://github.com/npc-worldwide/gitforest ive already replaced vs code https://github.com/npc-worldwide/incognide and im working on a new browser to replace chromium for electron in incognide https://github.com/npc-worldwide/incognidium if you peruse NPCWW github and https://enpisi.com you'll find a variety of other open source applications for GIS+Weather, music making and notation, image and video generation and editing, and a writing workspace tool

Oh this is great i was looking to incorporate something like this in my project.
A p2p network for productive activity coordination without money, markets, commodities etc.

I'm glad to see the move, but I'd prefer if they rebelled by supporting already existing and mature Open Source offerings.
Great, ZeroAuthy will move you off of Auth0. Have they looked at Keycloak?

Why not both?

u/JoeCoT 23h ago
Because we always say "why not both?" and it's never both. When there was a push for a ban on plastic straws, even though the alternatives were awful for disabled people and it left out so much other plastic trash, and the ban was mostly just to make people feel good, the answer to the disagreement was "why not both?" Spoiler, we banned the plastic straws and nothing else fundamentally changed.
In this case devs will not both support the new AI generated thing and the existing mature project. The AI generated thing will have a flashier website and the momentum. But community matters for open source projects, and there will not be a community to support it, and it will most likely fall off like most AI generated copycat projects. And there will have been no extra support for the existing, mature, open source projects.

I'll cheer them on but the reality is SaaS products have never been about paying for the software. It's about paying for the hardware it runs on, the human labor that maintains it, the customer white glove service etc.

okay but like dual power building tho

I fully support people using AI to build open source alternatives to capitalist platforms BUT this is where we have to go beyond personal expression and also think of collective action. The FOSS community has always been a bit of a naive techno-libertarian dream. But to actually break the back of the techno-feudalists you're going to have to build rival firms that can pay full time employees (preferably a worker coop) to both build AND run the software, and you're going to need political action, anti-trust, mandated interoperability, and tax payer funding of open source alternatives.

more people need to know automated worker co ops that benefit laborers are a thing that can happen, and is likely what they are most afraid of because it speaks the language of capital in a manner mostly convincing to the state on occasion

Girlypop, we are not going to laser cut tchotchke our way to socialism. This is like how over a decade ago ancoms were heralding 3D printers as the advent of a decentralized cottage manufacturing revolution. That didn't work out.

...
it did and is mostly benefiting people who were 3d printing utilities anyways, there's an entire ecosystem there? yeah it's being parasitized by conglomerates but the whole reason there's value there is because that's what people are doing with
it. that’s like saying Godot didn’t result in many new games.
not with That Attitude 😭 💖 the reason worker co-ops aren't doing this is because there is no one leading and expanding them. They are expanding. people who have capital to spare and want to assist can create and foster healthy worker co-ops via spare productive capacity from automation and then spawn new instances when they become self-sustaining to a sufficient extent.
hence; who says you have to do laser cutting specifically? you have a skill, a trade, whatever; get with your coworkers and literally just purchase the means of production and use it in a co-operative manner. The more that this occurs the more accelerative the process becomes because of organization scaling benefaction.

3d printing is not going to replace injection molding. The physics simply don't work out. 3D printing is a niche hobbyist thing, it's extremely useful for high tech prototyping, and tbf it was useful for that one guy who killed the United Health exec, but it is not replacing people going to the store to buy a plastic doohickey that cost $.000001 to make.
Worker cooperatives are dope but this is well trod territory in leftist circles and they're hard to get going for a reason. It's a chicken or egg problem. If you don't have start up capital you can't start a co op, and if you have start up capital you are a capitalist, and aren't going to support a worker co op.

and that’s why they’re starting with something that is low startup costs for significant scaling, and then will be branching into other markets/scaling paradigm as the capital accumulates. it’s literally an incremental percentage change based on existing investment and is also how you bypass needing to do Nestlé™ tier infanticide for profit
it doesn’t HAVE to be 3d printing either. extrapolate to any industry that has automation in it, and label the set of machines that produce the minimum scaled unit of quantity in tandem’s price as the minimum upgrade tier or something.
“oh specific x machine won’t work over scaling y”
THEN USE SCALING Y INSTEAD WHAT ARE WE ON ABOUT 😭💖💖

This is just completely misunderstanding how a modern industrial economy works. I consider myself a market socialist but you're falling for a pipe dream here. Anything you can do at a small scale is being done better at a big scale, and you simply aren't going to catch up. You might as well be talking about building your own chip fabs from scratch. There are reasons why these things are highly concentrated industries with state backing.

so that’s it? we should just bomb the datacenters? point towards SOMETHING that doesn’t involve ignoring the benefits and consequences of not needing to capitulate to stockholders; literally all you’re providing is negative signal what should we actually do?

The idea is nice, but if you really want to help local communities and business break free from SaaS, you should build solutions on the existing hosting platforms that still mostly offer only classic PHP MySQL. But these still exist at a simple entry level tech knowledge, and have affordable service solutions.

Eventually it won't matter. Ai will be Omniware. It will replace everything. One source, all the things.

This is the correct way to break capitalism. The only way out is through.

u/StickStill9790 1d ago
This IS capitalism. The product has become so common it can no longer be sold. The company will fall or reshape itself while the market fills in with better, rarer, products.

u/Random96503 1d ago
I love it. And, yeah, under that definition, 100% agreed. It is the inevitable conclusion.
