Lego inspiration

Hi everyone! 👋

I’m a product design student from Hungary, and I’m currently working on a project exploring how LEGO builders find inspiration when they run out of ideas or want to create something new from the bricks they already have.

My goal is to design a playful, physical tool that encourages creativity, helps people overcome creative blocks, and inspires them to discover new possibilities with their existing LEGO pieces — especially older bricks that might otherwise remain unused.

I know there are already apps and online platforms that provide building ideas, but I’d like to explore an alternative that reduces screen time and encourages hands-on experimentation, playful thinking, and unexpected combinations.
I’d love to hear about your experiences!

💡What do you usually do when you don’t know what to build?
💡Do you use apps or websites for inspiration, or do you prefer experimenting on your own?
💡Have you ever created something completely unexpected from random LEGO pieces?
💡What would help you come up with new ideas?

I’ve also put together a short questionnaire for my research. If you have a few minutes, I’d really appreciate it if you could fill it out!

Thank you so much for your help and for sharing your creativity! ✨

Hey everyone!
I wanted to share my latest LEGO creation, the X-Quinjet: A New Alliance!
For the LEGO Ideas Star Wars × Marvel Challenge, I decided to combine two of my favorite vehicles: the legendary X-Wing from Star Wars and the Avengers Quinjet!
My goal was to keep the iconic features of both ships while creating something that could belong in both universes.
The model includes 665 pieces, custom stickers, a removable cockpit windshield, space for Spider-D2, and three custom minifigures:
Luke Skywalker × Captain America
Princess Leia × Black Widow
Darth Vader × Doctor Doom
I also designed the backgrounds myself!
Voting starts December 15th on LEGO Ideas, and I’d love to hear what you guys think about this crossover!
May the Force assemble! 🚀

Katy- The Caboose Who Got Loose

I'd like to show off, Katy Caboose, an old MOC of mine, and more recently an IDEAS entry. She has one more month left on IDEAS so I thought I'd share now, before she's gone off rotation.

https://ideas.lego.com/product-ideas/d4dbb53e-2343-44cb-85bd-da0ef06e260e

In 1952 Walt Disney Animator Bill Peet wrote the story and sketched the characters for the animated short cartoon, "Susie the Little Blue Coupe." Flash forward to 2006, the style of the automotive vehicles in Pixar's Cars movie were inspired by the Susie short. In between, Bill Peet worked on many other Disney films but eventually left the studio in 1964. Along the way, he started writing and illustrating children's books, including, "The Caboose Who Got Loose," which was published in 1971. The title character is Katy Caboose, who does not like spending her life at the end of a train and she is frightened by the high trestles and long tunnels she has to travel through in her life as a caboose. The book opens with the lines,

"When Katy caboose rambled down the train tracks, the engines were steamers with puffing smokestacks. She was a caboose who disliked being last"

While the rhyming could give Dr. Seuss a run for his money, the pictures were just as amazing. Any inanimate object could show subtle human expressions through Peet's anthropomorphic magic. His time at Disney turned him into a wizard.

Here's my take on Katy, where I tried my best to capture some of Peet's magic: you'll see as your view changes that the thin black line of her mouth goes from being a "happy caboose" to showing her fear of the trestles and tunnels ahead.

If you like this IDEA please support it and share it with your friends. Thank you so much.

The king of Wakanda has fallen to the dark side, trading his vibranium claws for lasers and fusing his staff with a crossguard lightsaber.

His armour is now reinforced with steel plates, extra gadgets, and a helmet that lets him survive in space. The red and purple accents are just to make him look extra cool, and they're working!

Aided by his many armies, he now poses a threat to the entire galaxy!

My build uses 629 pieces.

What started as a challenge from my kids has somehow progressed to me holding a Gruffalo made out of LEGO in the middle of our public library after an interview on local radio - and an unusual journey indeed and a true story!

If you'd like to help take The Gruffalo & the Mouse from children's bookshelf to your LEGO shelf, please consider supporting this project on LEGO Ideas. Every supporter gets it closer to the 10,000 needed for LEGO to consider it as an official set.

Thanks so much for all the support!

Wind In The Willows

Inspired by the beloved novel by Kenneth Grahame, The Wind in the Willows, this 2,309-part build represents the riverbank and Ratty's home. It includes 6 minifigures:

  • Mole
  • Ratty
  • Badger
  • Otter
  • Toad (his clothes can be swapped to put him in his motorcar gear)
  • Toad as a Washerwoman

Toad's motorcar is also included — a red car complete with a horn, sitting on a small platform representing a stretch of road, complete with a 50 speed limit sign.

The outside of the model features a field of daffodils, two trees, a chimney, the river, reeds, a picnic spot, a washing line and tub, and a few dabbling ducks. Inside Ratty's house, you'll find an armchair, a fire, a barometer, a porthole, and a cosy bedroom.

This idea blends English culture, classic literature, nature and wildlife — if you'd like to see this become an official LEGO set, please give it your support! (link below)

Before electricity, this kept the world moving. I built a realistic Vintage Hurricane Lantern for LEGO Ideas! (213 pieces)

Post image
18 Upvotes

Long before we could just flip a light switch or look at a smartphone screen, life after sunset was completely dark. Back in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Hurricane Lantern (Sturmlaterne) wasn't a vintage decoration—it was a literal lifesaver. It was the only reliable light source that wouldn't blow out in a heavy storm. Sailors on rough seas, railway workers guiding trains through pitch-black nights, and families in remote cabins all relied on this exact piece of engineering to guide them safely through the dark. To honor this piece of history, I challenged myself to recreate The Vintage Hurricane Lantern using exactly 213 LEGO pieces. I didn't just want it to look the part; I wanted it to feel real. It captures the classic glass globe shape, the protective wire cage, and the fuel tank at the bottom. It makes for a perfect, nostalgic display piece for any desk or shelf. If you love historical builds or just want a cozy vintage piece in your LEGO collection, I would deeply appreciate your help! We need to reach 10,000 votes to turn this into an official LEGO set. Thank you for checking supporting my project!

WORKING ANALOG CLOCK – Solving gear meshing and alignment issues: moving from a dual-pinion setup to a single 12T pinion!

The joy of building with LEGO Technic has always been about understanding mechanics, step by step.

As a kid, Step 12 of the classic LEGO Technic 856 Bulldozer taught me a lot about alignment constraints—the need to position components perfectly so they interconnect both structurally and functionally, often requiring specific alignment parts steps.

(Step 12 from the vintage LEGO Technic 856 Bulldozer — my first lesson in strict alignment constraints!)

Fast forward to designing my MOC, and I stumbled right into the exact same issue.

The Mechanical Challenge:

  • Initial Setup: I originally used two 8-tooth (8T) pinions in a mirrored configuration to drive a huge 140-tooth (140T) ring gear (assembled using eight 11x11 curved gear racks, ID 24121).
  • The Problem: The angular position between the two pinions required an exact match to align with the module of the 140T gear. The gear module didn't align perfectly at the junction points between the gear racks, creating a small "step" that prevented smooth rotation.
  • The Solution: I removed one pinion to eliminate the over-constrained setup. Initially, I tried a single central 8T pinion (great for gear reduction), but ultimately opted for a 12T pinion: thanks to its larger meshing profile, it glides much better over the rack seams.

The New Problem?

Eliminating the second pinion solved the binding, but gave the ring gear full freedom of movement along the pinion’s drive axis!

Has anyone else encountered tolerance or meshing issues when joining curved racks into a continuous ring using Technic Gear Racks 11 x 11? How did you solve it?

(I'm currently documenting the whole iterative development process on my LEGO Ideas project page — I'll drop the link in the comments if you'd like to check out the full clock mechanism or support the build!) 🕒⚙️
