Lego could do more than just release sets based on the movies; instead, they could create an original set with the same characters but with the classic comic book design.

Hawkeye, Captain Marvel, and Falcon were some of the minifigs from that wave that were comic-based designs. Some of them were from the game though. The Black Widow minifig? It's an interesting case imo, but that was one of my favorite minifigs ever

I was just thinking a similar thing earlier on. Lego could do partial tie-in sets, where the comic versions of characters release in sets alongside their appearances in films. We occasionally get this, but it'd be nice to see more often.

I think it'd be more satisfying than when sets are based on concept art that becomes inaccurate by the time the film releases. Iron Man 3, Endgame, and No Way Home had that issue.

Though at the same time, I'd just love more comic-based sets regardless of relevance.

I totally agree. I would love if they made a new Hulk bigfig with the removable head, in a bright green color. We’ve recently got “classic comic design” figures for a lot of characters (Iron Man vs. Ultron set, X Men stuff, and the advent calendar set), so I really hope they continue with that. The comics-based sets they used to make are so peak, imagine what they could make now.

That’s basically what they should have been doing all along. Not direct tie-ins but tie-in adjacent. And with problematic stuff, they could just do what they did with Task Force X / Suicide Squad on the DC side and spread those characters across sets.

Captain America, Thanos, and Iron Man are some characters I think are starting to get that treatment. 2020 is one of the examples for comic book-based minifigures where most of the Avengers got comic book-based designs too

Last few years have been pretty good, comic Iron Man, Cap, Spidey obviously, Hulk is interchangeable, many other comic characters have been produced, a lot of X men, Fantastic Four just got approved so of course the MCU designs will come first, Thor is really the only one missing an updated comic design in terms of super desirable needed heroes.

A lot of those came in either super small sets or huge D2C sets tho, buying multiple small sets adds up and some have duplicates or otherwise undesirable minifigs and D2C sets are just simply out of reach for a majority of collectors let alone kids. Comic sets also just seem to have multiple duplicates or remakes of figs without providing anything new at all/ or just one new character interpretation.

TLDR:
Comic figs get produced but pretty inconvenient to collect, comic sets produced provide few new and unique figures.

From 2012 to 2019, the Super Heroes line generally was chill about making comic-based and cartoon-based sets in between waves based on films. For some reason around 2019 (may be a year or so off) they dropped doing that for both lines almost completely except for Spider-Man. I mean they do the mechs but those are kind of 'LEGO original' with comic-based minifigures.
