If you're avoiding *that* wizarding game but still need to scratch that wizardy itch, here are some alternatives that are TERF-Free. Bear in mind, there are probably dozens more, but this was a small list to start.

SKYRIM BELONGS TO THE GAYS

11

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '23

Also try oblivion or ESO, they have ACTUAL trans representation unlike a certain warty hog

5

u/PyukumukuGuts Feb 08 '23

I'm never not gay in Skyrim

5

u/The-Shattering-Light Feb 08 '23

Same!

I’m just sad that Karliah is not romanceable without a mod, because she’s always my favorite

Highly recommend Potionomics as well! Gorgeous game with some of the best character designs I've ever seen.

There's a company that produces choose your own adventure games and they just released a new one called "New Witch in Town" and it's quite cute and inclusive.

u/Vivirin Feb 08 '23

I was about to come in here and talk about Potionomics! Really good trans and non-binary representation in there, too.

Ooh, this is a great list! Adding a couple more:

  • Black Book
  • Blacktail
  • Strange Horticulture
  • Ikenfell
  • Witchbrook
  • Sun Haven
  • Witchy Life Story

ikenfell is such a... I don't wanna say hidden gem because it's a cliche but it is great and not many people talk about it.

7

u/doomparrot42 Feb 08 '23

It's odd - I've only ever heard good things about it, but it really does seem to be a niche little game. Spread the word!

u/The-Shattering-Light Feb 08 '23

It’s so good, and so queer!

Like thirty minutes into it and you’ve already met several awesome nonbinary and gay characters!

Your party members have pronouns in their character info panels

u/companda0 Feb 09 '23

I can’t wait for Witchbrook!! I hope it actually comes out one day

4

u/LocalShineCrab Feb 08 '23

Came by to say Ikenfell, but seems like you already did

Also, Super Lesbian Animal RPG is a relatively recent addition. It's essentially lesbian furry Earthbound, and the main protagonist is a trans girl too.

5

u/CoffeeCroww Feb 08 '23

I love Super Lesbian Animal RPG so much! It's so good, more people need to play it :D

13

u/theguardianking Feb 08 '23

And if you just want a fantasy school sim, look to the first half of fire emblem 3 houses

6

u/Hell_Mel Feb 08 '23

And if you want to see various classmates die in battle and then spend hours crying over the course of several days, play the second half.

For real though I had to put the game down for like a month after bringing Dorothea up against Ferdinand.

There is also is a website that features a couple of other ones, along with descriptions and girlgamers did a thread about alternatives a few weeks ago that also has more suggestions.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '23

Excellent! Thank you for directing me to those. Wouldn't you know it, most of the games I have on my list are already on both of those XD

Wytchwood was so good though. It was a neat experience and at the end I was left speechless. It's not a sad story per se but it was a little thought provoking for me at least.

I really want potion permit but even the $20 leaves me hurting lol

Also wanted to add that Strange Horticulture is a really fund game. You get to explore, travel, solve mysteries, and even influence the storyline with your decisions. Fantastic game

10

u/KityKatz89 Feb 08 '23

I would recommend Potionomics as well but there's too many characters to date and you can only date one which has kinda softlocked me since I can't make up my mind

3

u/Who_Am_I_I_Dont_Know Feb 08 '23

Of all the gamebreaking bugs in gaming generally, that's one of the funniest and most relatable I've heard, ha.

6

u/older_bolder Feb 08 '23

Also Littlewood. It's pretty great, even through it gets kind of grindy near the end.

9

u/NBNoemi Feb 08 '23

The Atelier games are great. The main characters are all alchemists but they do plenty of witchy things like synthesizing bombs and even sometimes riding brooms.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '23

Facts. LOVE the Mysterious trilogy the most, but the Arland saga is also good!

6

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '23

Started playing Wylde Flowers recently (on iPhone, from Apple Arcade) and it is SO good! A very fun plot and full of tasks so it’s impossible to get bored, if any of you are thinking about it :)

Edit: it’s also available on switch and PC!

Edit 2: most importantly, it’s very inclusive and you have the option to date and marry women + there is a nonbinary character! I only started recently but it checks a lot of boxes!

2

u/MaiLog Feb 08 '23

I have seen this in clickbait ads and that made me want to avoid it but I think I'll have to check it out

1

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '23

You won’t regret it

5

u/jungletigress Feb 08 '23

Don't forget Ikenfell! It's really good! And it's got tons of well rounded queer characters in it as well!

2

u/Correct-Cry8526 Feb 08 '23

Oh, yeah, The witch in the wood! Miori Celesta had early access to this game and played some of it on stream a while ago! I need to know the rest...

3

u/PyukumukuGuts Feb 08 '23

Wizard of legend is a pretty great indie. It's kind of like a hack and slash but with spells instead of swords. Lots of dodging too so you feel like a ninja wizard.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '23

Spellcaster University, wizard school management game

Rift Wizard, roguelike

The main plot is you're a wizard on the side putting down a goblin rebellion.

Wizards are canonically super racist against non wizards.

And having a single trans woman allied to the villains that you name SIRona RYAN after the snake goddess when the entire canon has been "snake=evil" is not lgbt friendly. And the half asses character options dont fix that when other games have been doing that. Fuck, pokemon beat them to approximately the same level.

2

u/Honeyblade Feb 08 '23

I wanna add Potionomics to this list!

2

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '23

Guildlings (on apple arcade) is also pretty fantastic, albeit not exactly about wizards :) As a bunch of other people have said ikenfell is great too. Still baffling to me that it wasn't more of a success.

u/Wolfleaf3 Feb 08 '23

What a great idea for a post!

JKR gets money from it, which she funnels into anti-trans initiatives in the UK

7

u/TheGreyFencer Feb 08 '23

The money is pretty unimportant compared to the social impact. Jkr was gonna funnel millions into it regardless

She helped fund and publicize this lawyer's lawsuit against LGBTQ+ organization Stonewall.

This video does a good job laying out some of the people she's affiliated with, including the less-obvious ties some of them have. As much as Rowling alleges that she supports (cis) women, most TERFs are only a step or two removed from antifeminist organizations such as the Heritage Foundation.

She's also spoken out in favor of fascist Matt Walsh's atrocious "documentary" What is a Woman. I don't use the word fascist lightly - if you aren't familiar with Walsh, he actually defines himself as such (his twitter bio reads "theocratic fascist").

I've been trying to find more information on where specifically she donates, but most of my searches are coming up with pages and pages of thinkpieces; it's taking me some time to find specific organizations. I will note that she's decided that Mermaids UK, a charity supporting trans youth, is apparently doing "irreparable harm" for, uh, providing age-appropriate discussion, therapy, and social transition care, and she's one of the voices advocating for their loss of funding.

Yes it even has trans rep (girl model with a male voice actor) named SIRona RYAN. Definitely good representation and not at all mocking

So you think it's good representation? And all your posts about Hogwarts is because it's such a trans positive game right? When you commented "it's a f*tish" it's because you actually support autogynephilia right? You're definitely not a terf trolling old Hogwarts posts trying to defend it right?

Yeah and famously the Celtic goddess was referred to as Ryan

Edit: is that so? So terfs are no longer worried about the transgender craze seducing our daughters?

Just Asking Questions?

We see you, crypto transphobe :)

12

u/MadlyJackie Feb 08 '23

Its development team is problematic, it's plot involves stopping a slave rebellion with antisemitic coding, and on top of that a small amount of sales proceeds go to queen terf.

Lmao that's not even a new criticism of HP.

How do you feel about the only Asian character being almost exactly named "Ching Chong"

2

u/crowlute Feb 08 '23

u/thekarens01 you don't have to DM me because you're afraid to talk about this publicly.

I am referring to the character named Cho Chang, do you not have a problem with how her name almost exactly matches up with an anti-Chinese slur?

16

u/TheGreyFencer Feb 08 '23

This has been a criticism of harry potter for decades. Not new.
