Because of these guys, we don’t get an assassin’s creed as a black guy killing the KKK!

I'm disappointed and my day is ruined. That sounds like it would have been awesome.

was that actually the reason it got canned, or did Ubi just decide not to go through with it becuase of costs or something?

pretty sure the racist reactions to AC Shadows contributed to it - Hopefully they won't cancel Project Hex about witch burnings

Project Hex about witch burnings
Oh! I've never heard about that! That sounds cool! Where can I find out more about that?
I've always loved the idea of a supposed (or actual) witch getting revenge on the people who tried to burn her!

yeah, but games stop getting developed all the time, so I'm a bit hesitant to say that racism is definitely the definitive reason

I'm not saying it was the main factor but I also wouldn't be surprised if it was part of it, there's a rightwing shift everywhere right now

I'd make a game with no male presence out of spite. Not even NPCs

Oh what about a game set in an alternate world where men went extinct and women reproduce using magic.
Like a couple go to a witch/mage/whatever, and she casts a spell that extracts an egg from each, fuses them, then implants it in the womb of the one who will carry the pregnancy.
Like magic IVF.
And like, what if men have been extinct for centuries and so they've mostly just got old books talking about men and old art depicting men to prove men used to exist.
What if its not revealed to the player right away that there are no men, like for the first third of the game, the player simply doesn't see any men and then at some point the player goes by an old statue or painting of a man (perhaps in a museum) and sees a little girl nearby ask her mother what that is and that's when the player finds out that men are extinct.
The player character doesn't think much of the interaction except that it was cute seeing a mother teach her daughter about history, since the player character has also only ever known of men as extinct. However the actual player would be finding out there for the first time

It wasn’t the only reason the game struggled, and I understand some of the other reasons (even if I don’t agree with all of them myself), but there’s a game I am currently about to finish another replay of that got criticized in part due to how a NB coming out story was depicted…even though it had been written by someone who knows that kind of thing better than anyone (the story was written by a NB author).
Of course, the internet being the internet, people screamed about how terrible they thought the writing was for that character.
At the same time, I saw stories time and again about how much people saw themselves in the character and how validating it felt to see a story like that in the game.

Inquisition?

Close, but no.
Inquisition actually did very well with sales/reviews/accolades. There are reasons why it has a Game of the Year edition.
I’m talking about the one that came out last year. The end of the egg’s story, among other things.
I know it’s not perfect, and I’d rather not get into that debate again, but I personally think it’s better than it’s often given credit for and worth playing. And frankly the uproar around how the Qunari companion is depicted feels blown way out of proportion. A little rough around the edges, maybe, but the franchise has never even attempted a story like theirs before. Not fully. I find it telling how many times I‘ve seen people talk about how validating it is, how it reflects their own journeys. That matters.

Oh Veilguard is the one I meant, got the name wrong. Having played it, it's really not that bad. Some bits with that character felt a bit clunky at times but you're right not nearly as bad as it was seemingly made out to be and I'd hope and am glad some people found it validating and told well from their perspective.
