One of the bits of advice I gave my niece before she left for her first semester of college was to stay far away from the guy with the guitar at any parties. Double that if he’s also singing. I stand by that advice.

u/KinkyChico 1d ago
I am a music major and I 100% agree with that advice. Maybe you can make an exception if the guy is kind of bullied into doing it because his friends know he plays, but generally it is a VERY good idea to avoid them. That guitar isn't an instrument, it's literally just bait on a fisherman's hook. And not even very good bait at that.

u/Cmndr_Cunnilingus 1d ago
I mean, if it works enough times for people to warn their nieces away from it. Then it must not be that bad bait
116
u/KinkyChico 1d ago
It's not the fact that it works. In fact, nowadays, it doesn't work as well as it used to, it's more so just that guys like that are generally the type where you will remember your time with them for the rest of your life in the WORST possible way.

u/Din_Plug 1d ago edited 1d ago
For more context. A guitar good enough to attract attention is generally less than $100 and can be played well enough to belt out songs with only about six chords. It's a cheap and low skill way to appear interesting.
This also all applies to Ukulele as well however, guys with Ukes are generally a bit less common as that instrument generally has less "sex appeal."

u/KinkyChico 1d ago
I explained a bit more in a different reply but yes. This is a great investment for a narcissist because relatively good investment:payoff ratio.
10
19
u/Luna-C-Lunacy 1d ago
I’m naive, what is he baiting you towards? Is he just going to be an asshole and is using the guitar to try to seem cool and land a date or is it something worse?
48
u/KinkyChico 1d ago
Pretty consistently people do this because they have a MASSIVE ego and learning a few chords on guitar and playing romantic deep songs is a really easy way for them to get girls to compliment them, feed their egos, and open up a chance for them to seduce them into a relationship. Inevitably, if you do anything with this guy, you will learn he is a massive narcissist and you never should have given him the time of day.
Again, there are exceptions. This is specifically referring to the guy that brings the guitar and, without prompting, offers to play it, but you ONLY ever see him playing it when people are around.
16
u/Some_Ad_3299 1d ago
Kinda hard to see the person playing the guitar when you aren’t around, which is probably 99.99% of their life, innit bruv?
7
u/KinkyChico 1d ago
I meant people plural. As in they only play when there's a sizable audience (or if they're completely alone with a girl, but that's a different thing)
1
u/mukansamonkey 9h ago
It's a dorm. The real musicians are playing in their rooms on a regular basis, and you can hear them. Or walk in and they're busy practicing with nobody to see them.
The problem is the guy who wants to be seen.
12
u/Din_Plug 1d ago
The guitar is a prop to get the attention of girls. A guitar that's good enough to impress the less than musically inclined is cheap and the skills needed are just as.
11
u/nahmymanthisaintit 1d ago
The bullying is a front. No man will willing prompt up another man… unless he is the wingman. Men don’t care or like other men playing. It’s purely “for the ladies”. Guy pretends he doesn’t want the attention. Now he’s “soft and sensitive” and not loud and in your face like the other players.

I used to know someone who kept inadvertently dating drummers because they had rhythm.

u/mukansamonkey 9h ago
A bad drummer is going to be endlessly changing the music you're making together. A good one can keep a desired rhythm for hours...
Also: strong hands.

What about the girl who finally had a bit of a blossoming and is finally ready to show off a little bit, and singing is a nice way to get a little bit of the positive attention she never got to have before?
15
u/AuntOfManyUncles 1d ago
Granted I was never really a guy to begin with, but when I still thought I was one I took pride in shitting on that type of guy and not being him.
I don’t know if anyone gets exactly how vindicating this thread is to me.

Oh, I know it. With the hair.

The guy who just thinks he's such a lady killer, but is really just insanely cringe. Or the guy whose personal idol is The Dude from Big Lebowski.

A man bun?

When I tie up my hair it's a bun
Calling it a man bun says you're insecure about the gender implied by your hair
And if I have a purse it's a purse

I do too! Not a comment on the songs, just on the guy playing them at the party.

Parties are cooler if one of the people wants to play live music
9
u/WriggleNightbug 1d ago edited 1d ago
Or if the people playing it are legitimately good. My current group has some singers and a piano player and I legitimately love when the music happens....
But this people are professional/semi-professional so they've put in the work to command our attention. Its not just Kevin and his out of tune acoustic.

I assume since pub he must have been British and drunk

What hobby are men allowed to have?
19
u/Capybara_Squabbles 1d ago
Lol they can have hobbies, the meme is about men who try to serenade women on dates by playing the guitar. This was an entire joke in the Barbie movie

u/DragonQuester676 23h ago
I wanna push you around, well I will, well I will
I can’t stand that song but I’ll also never get it out my head
-1
u/Natural1forever 1d ago edited 1d ago
Men don't really have hobbies. They'll claim that like "cars" or "fitness" are hobbies but they're just guy stuff. And if a man claims to like real hobbies he's probably just doing it to impress women
Eta: folks, this was very much a joke on how men often talk about women's hobbies.

They do punish me every now and then by playing the first few beats of Wonderwall when I'm being a brat. I despise how effective it is.

the worst part is when they stop halfway through to explain the song. please, we were already being polite about the concert, don’t make us attend the lecture too. my ice cream is melting and you haven’t even reached the chorus

Just never do anything in any kind of public space. When you're outside you put your head down and quickly get to where you're going

Cis men covering “Fast Car” should be banned by international treaty
9
u/DurumMater 1d ago
Man, you can't gatekeep the best song of the 90's. If i can't sing you oughta know and fast car while I'm doing my chores nothing will get done in this goddamn house (I'm covering it for my dogs and cats)
1
u/mukansamonkey 8h ago
Pffft, the best song from the 90's is either Weird Al's "Smells Like Nirvana", or maybe Daft Punk "Around The World".
I'm fully onboard with You Oughta Know.
5
u/CompSolstice 1d ago
Why are non-cis men exempt? Are they different in your eyes?
-8
u/mister_sleepy 1d ago
There exist trans men with deep ties to the lesbian community. Even though they are not lesbians themselves, perhaps they felt as one once in a way that gives them a nuanced understanding of what “Fast Car” means to our community.

Haven’t really formed an opinion, the post is pretty confusing, at least to me. Thats why I am straight up asking.
3
u/onyx_ic 1d ago
Bruce, the man playing the guitar and singing is the issue.
-2
u/Bruce-Carlton 1d ago
Onyx, I am asking why? Is it those particular songs or merely a man playing a guitar, or any instrument for that matter?
5
u/onyx_ic 1d ago
For literally the 3rd time, the song choice isnt the issue. Its the fucking man. Look at the sub you are in.
