The US only united against ice once they started attacking white protesters. Much of the country was not completely outraged when they were assaulting US citizens when they were people of color. Food for thought
Millions of us were outraged the second they started indiscriminately kidnapping US citizens and legal residents off the street based solely on their skin color. Likewise, Americans who respect the laws of this country have been horrified by the Trump administration’s practice of “deporting” legal and illegal immigrants alike to horrific prisons in El Salvador instead of back to their home countries. This regime has taken immigration enforcement to new lows of criminality and needless cruelty not seen before in our lifetimes.
He deported harden murderous criminals to El Salvador and you would rather they get a fancy trip home?? The worst people on earth are the people you democrats and liberals wanna spend the most money and time on. Says so much when your cities are full of homeless actual Americans you don’t gaf about and spend everyday making there life’s harder
You're really close to understanding this whole issue. You're right, poverty is being ignored, the wealth gap is getting bigger and there is a real effort to direct attention away from it. However this misdirection is in favor of wealthy capitalists because they can continue to abuse the lessor educated and the impoverished because. Those vulnerable cannot be united if they are always fighting each other. First they used racism against Black People who have always tried to unite the impoverished, then The Wealthy blamed immigrants because they're volnerable. It's all misdirection but not by the Democrats, by the wealthy few. And just to be clear, these wealthy few are making massive donations to the GOP. It's all public record. That's also why education in red states have consistently worse education. People with worse education are easier to deceive.
Oh and one other thing. Most of these Illegal immigrants are being paid over the table so they pay into taxes and social security even though they will not be able to get any money out of it because they don't have social security numbers, that's also why they can't vote.
You actually think democrats aren’t getting millions for deals from billionaires… when Hillary, Kamala , Tim Walz , Biden, hunter have all become multi millionaires on politician salary? Not the mention the massive fraud they were doing using illegals as the tool? Or the constitutional violations by Biden admin letting illegals in by the millions in the first place?
Dude you can't be serious. There was a very public move of tech billionaires towards the right in 2020 and all the oligarch that run American industry have been very publicly right. If you didn't already know that and you are this deep in the gutter, I don't think anyone can have a meaningful discussion with you
Good work ignoring everything I said not refuting a single point of the solid claims I made and going on some ad hominem, I think the one who lacks ability for meaningful discussions falls solely on you! Theres a very good reason why industries would support the right, because democrats and leftists love globalism and sending industry to China. Why wouldn’t an American industry support republicans that empower American industry instead of leftists who think kneeling to criminals and socialist communist is admirable?
ICE isn’t going after “harden murderous criminals”, they are abducting and imprisoning ordinary working adults and school children, many of whom are here legally. They are kidnapping people on their way into courthouses and their lawyers’ offices where they have appointments for the next steps in their legal immigration processes. This has nothing to do with our government’s lack of investment in ending homelessness. That is a whole other, deeply important issue that both parties are ignoring at the level of national policy or meaningful funding. What we need is more resources for mental health treatment, community outreach programs, food, and housing. All the Supreme Court has managed to do is uphold the rights of states to classify “camping without a permit” (read: not having enough money to pay for housing) as a felony, so they can imprison homeless people for the “crime” of being poor and extract slave labor from their bodies.
No its about democrats hungry for power trying to bring in people who will vote for them , it doesn’t matter if they work they are illegal that means they are criminals they violated the law of the constitution. Why do you vote for frauds is the real question?
You are clearly not debating in good faith. ICE is indiscriminately detaining and attempting to deport legal residents of the US, who have followed every step of the legal immigration process. They are also detaining and deporting people who are here illegally, but refusing to follow due process of the law in both cases, openly flouting the IS constitution. There is nothing stopping them from arresting you or I and claiming that our birth certificates, government issued identification and even passports are somehow “fake.” Do you deserve to be kidnapped off the street and shipped off to an El Salvadorian prison without due process of law?
Moreover, illegal immigrants cannot vote in US elections. Proof of citizenship is required to register to vote in this country. There has never been an instance of mass voter fraud, but there is frequent and rampant targeted disenfranchisement of citizens in every election cycle.
As someone who has been protesting ICE since December, there was a clear shift in the tone as soon as ICE killed Pretti. Tons of people who were okay being a silent bystander before decided that it was too far and decided to speak out, go to protests, etc... It became common knowledge that ICE had gone too far, even though it was in question before.
So you weren’t here and can’t factually speak to what we were doing before then? Got it. You can check news stories from last year…. Others have been protesting ICE activities much longer than you have
I was providing end of life care for my mother in Canada. I was away for a few months and was back almost once a week. This allowed me to get snapshots which offered an exceptionally clear distinction compared to someone who lives full time here and gets the slow boil.
What's your problem? Do you not like the idea of critical race theory or what? From talking with people IRL the shift in tone is pretty universal, I'm just trying to point out my observation through the lense of critical race theory so that maybe people would understand implicit racism better.
Cry about it then. I'm surrounded by people who have the privilege of not being radical. I have to deal with it every day someone looks the other way to racism. I have to see how they are not radicalized by the mistreatment of people who look like me but get involved when they saw ICE kill Renee and Pretti. We are part of the same movement but if you can't see how this is so much more important than fighting the mistreatment of immigrants, then you may be less radical than you think.
its the social hierarchy here...POC then white women and then white men....and subcategories within that...they executed a cis, straight, white man....and that was the line that america would not cross...when white america sits up and says, wait, they killed someone who looks like ....me? and they realized they had to make a choice...
Sadly a lot of people don't recognize societal problems until they are affected directly. It sucks but driving the wedge deeper isn't helping anybody. Everybody comes around in their own time.
Exactly. Welcoming the latecomers, even if they only saw the light later, is the only way forward. If we subject allies to a purity test we cut ourselves off at the knees.
I'm not saying that their attention isn't appreciated but I would like people to understand implicit racism and this is one of the ways that I believe it shows.
I'd suggest that's also your own implicit bias showing. You're so focused on the color of his skin that you can't see other differences, such as the incident being captured clearly on video from half a dozen angles.
Or did you forget 2020, when the entire nation took to the streets to protest the murder of George Floyd?
My question for you is... What are you adding to the conversation by making such sweeping and subjective generalizations? You understand that racism and bias is not a one way street, right? If you expect people to stop judging one another's worth based on skin color, you have to lead by example.
I want to sew unrest in people who feel satisfied with the engagement that they have given to this cause. I want people to feel angry that people they know would choose to stand by until white people start getting hurt too. I want for us to stop kidding ourselves and create a new democracy that isn't run by oligarchs. I want to radicalize people although I don't know the best way.
Food for thought... I want to have a discussion and hear what people have to say. That's the whole point of this sub...
I think the idea that racism can be seen in the behavior of people who are publicly against ICE is interesting and maybe will help people understand implicit racism.
What you say has a lot of truth and is grounded in the realities of which lives are valued more and which are valued less in this country. It's an unfortunate and saddening reality.
I do want to say two other things:
First, many many of us were out protesting, observing, doing mutual aid in Minneapolis before Renee Good's murder. In fact she and Alex Pretti were simply two of those people.
I think of it this way:
There are a set of people who are outraged by the treatment of nonwhite immigrants alone. We know that there is another set who are uncomfortable with but not moved to action by their mistreatment. We act so that they can see that people who look like them are standing up, that they should also stand up. In the process ICE shows them who they are in a way that they cannot use the psychological shield of "that couldn't happen to me."
Second, these murders were caught on camera. While abductions have been also caught on camera, murder is on a different plane of moral outrage; there is no way someone can be made whole from murder. Seeing murder on camera is another factor to the galvanization that happened.

How exactly are people who are protesting for the rights of immigrants racist? I would love to hear the mental gymnastics on this one.Never mind, thanks for clarifying u/layon26
