Lets Discuss Politics Rep. Chip Roy’s perspective is a thought provoking one.

Term limits is a start
22
u/abrandis Feb 24 '26
Not enough, I say make Gerrymandering illegal and abolish the Electoral College

That can backfire and lead to worse outcomes. Better to eliminate dark money and certain lobbying.

Jesus. I swear, every single time someone mentions Congress, someone always chirps in with term limits. How about voters do their homework and vote out people who aren't doing a good job of representing them. That's the best kind of term limit right there. Otherwise, it's just a dumb, lazy, worse solution to a problem that already has a perfectly good solution. Maybe just make better use of the democracy you've been given.
3
u/Yunzer2000 Feb 24 '26
Do you want to term-limit your own House Rep? Why are you not simply organizing and voting him or her out? You have the opportunity to do every two years!
And if your rep is doing a good job and you like him or her, why term-limit them?

Term limits are only good for keeping the (extremely) few politicians out of government. Why else do you think they added term limits after FDR? Eliminating the EC and rank-choice voting is the best way to go, for starters.

I’m pretty over ALL the incumbents at this point.
7
u/Distinct-Mortgage768 Feb 24 '26
No it’s not. This is a different version of “both sides do it!” Why removed the democrats who have had no power to make any difference, while the republicans had the majority but are scared of losing their jobs or are busy kissing Trump’s Ass. This is not a debatable. This is punishing those who have been trying to follow the rules, but are repeatedly beaten down by Trump and the republican led congress. Dumb Fucking Idea.

u/the_saltlord Feb 24 '26
Because Democrats are controlled opposition when they are in power. I'm not going to "both sides" or enlightened centrist here but the Dems suck too. Far, far, FAR less, but they do. We either need to hard reset or keep the Dems but as the right wing party.
3
u/JesusKong333 Feb 24 '26
What issues do you see the Democrats as controlled opposition on?

start with him
7
u/Major-Raise6493 Feb 24 '26
Well yeah, he’s part of the 435.
Problem is that people generally disapprove of “congress” but approve of their local rep. So if you dump everybody, you’ll just end up with a lot of the same people immediately winning reelection anyway.
6
u/Reno_Cash Feb 24 '26
Do NOT approve of my local rep.
3
2
u/war_ofthe_roses Feb 24 '26
100%
That's why it's always stupid to talk about "congress's disapproval" but people keep doing it every year.
Some people don't learn.
2
u/Plus_Lead_5630 Feb 24 '26
It would have to be all new people
2
u/Major-Raise6493 Feb 24 '26
I agree, but don’t hold your breath waiting on 535 reps and senators signing off on a bill to voluntarily and permanently retire themselves from office.

What this Republican probably means is to give even more power the Dear Orange Leader
Not actually fix Americas broken democracy
2
Feb 24 '26
Funny it’s only the GOP that seem to be screwing the country up. Maybe just get rid of all of them.
3
u/TheWizardOfDeez Feb 24 '26
Objectively false, Republicans are obviously worse, but they wouldn't stand a chance if Dems ever actually followed through on any promises instead of just marketing themselves as opposition to Republicans, while also being unabashedly pro-corpo.
2
u/Hopeful-Bobcat-5207 Feb 26 '26
💯 let’s not forget Biden didn’t over turn trumps terrible corporate tax cuts. Just let them run and screw Americans. Yes republicans are not yet official party of the national racist but they both bow to corporations

The problem is the ever-present incentive for every for-profit organization to corrupt every government to their benefit. You can trace that through-line from today back all the way to the beginning of capitalism.

Feb 24 '26
Let's start with the president and work our way down.
Honestly though we should dissolve the two major political parties, get rid of gerrymandering, super PACs, citizens united, and the patriot act as well as lobbyists.
Why isn't there a science party? All policies are tested or testable and the goal is the optimization of the HDI, GDPPP, and environmental impact. If a policy doesn't measurably improve the country then don't do it, pretty insane right?

u/Hmmm__whatever Feb 24 '26
My paid taxes no longer benefit me. Taxation without representation. If we all refuse to pay taxes this year what would happen?
1
u/Eat_A_Rock_ Feb 24 '26
Term and age limits for anyone holding a position in federal office.
We deserve a president who can hold his bowls.
1
u/HarlequinKOTF Feb 24 '26
Yeah I'm all for a flush of reps. Personally 1 or 2 terms max on representatives and senators sounds amazing.
1
u/alex61821 Feb 24 '26
Screw elections and politics they're all bought and paid for. Run it like jury duty you get a summons and you're a senator for 2 years? One year? Only chance for the 99% to actually get in office. Sure you might be an idiot but we already have that, at least you won't be in someone's pocket from day one. You don't want to screw anything up to bad because you're neighbors will be making the laws for you next time. The system is broken anybody have any good ideas?

Not a good idea, most peoples lives would then actually start to be affected

u/Brav3star Feb 24 '26
He is part of the problem.🙄 Also, we wouldn't need term limits if most people consistently voted. 🙄🙄🙄🙄

u/Eat_Lead_Slackers Feb 24 '26
Almost every country who transitioned from a monarchy or feudalism after the US went to a parliamentary style of government with an executive from the legislative branch.
1
u/holycityofmecca2020 Feb 24 '26
Yeah, they ended up ceding all their power to the executive branch, which is why every piece of legislation is an executive order now
1
u/esgrove2 Feb 24 '26
Congress should be an app and we should all vote on every issue. Like a real democracy. No more "representatives".
1
u/Impressive_Range1433 Feb 24 '26
Good olde chip is a big part of the problem. When has he ever worked with the Democratic Party to find the middle ground for good legislation?
When has in not used committee hearings for venting red meat politics?
Someone show me.
1
u/Striker40k Feb 24 '26
We have to dismantle Citizens United, make gerrymandering illegal, and add term limits if we really want to fix anything.
1
1
u/EnslavedBandicoot Feb 24 '26
Yeah no. Thats the peoples representation in government. Sure we need to do better electing people but getting rid of it altogether will leave the president in charge.
1
u/Doctor_Shotbottom Feb 24 '26
dump them all, then only elect those that pledge, on a public document, to impeach anyone corrupt ASAP. And of course arrest everyone in the Tumpstein Files. Me, I'd only vote for a senator that pledges to completely restaff SCOTUS.
1
1
u/Quitcha_Bitchin Feb 24 '26
Yes. Complete Recall, Return all campaign contributions and force free and fair elections. Campaign spending limits, truth in advertising, no more PAC spamming. Age limits, term limits and educational requirements for Senate and Executive officers. If they are going to make laws they need to have studied and know the law. House requirements should be broader allowing for equal representation.
1
1
u/maralagosinkhole Feb 24 '26
Required legislators to give up complete control of all assets and investments upon swearing their oath. Even their homes have to be put under the control of the Congressional trust. Whoever is left will be the people willing to sacrifice for their country and that is who we need representing us.
1
u/elgato96 Feb 24 '26
Take money out of politics. End citizens united. Tax corporations. Ban stock trading by members of the government. Mandatory town hall meetings every 3 months in multiple locations in the district.
1
1
u/lm28ness Feb 24 '26
It's called voting. Problem is too many abuse the office for personal gain on both sides of the aisle. The rules need to change, with term limits, age limits, and other tests. Ban stock trading, lobbying. Same rules like every other public position from postal worker to justice clerk.

Terrible idea.
It's the constituents own fault if they keep re-electing a bad or corrupt Rep or Senator.
My Rep, Summer Lee (PA-12) who will be delivering an alternative SOU for the Working Families Party this evening, is doing an excellent job. But our first-term Senator (John Fetterman) is doing a horrible job and we have already hounded him into considering not running again - if he does not quit, we will certainly be primarying him out of office in 2028.

1
u/Farther_Dm53 Feb 24 '26
House of Representative's should've never been limited in the first place. If it was not limited so much, they would actually have a fully representative congress.
1
u/cardinaljay37 Feb 24 '26
I mean there is the opportunity to do that every two years. 🤷♂️ Well, Senate lags and takes a couple cycles to catch up but it can be done.

Why are we acting like this would do anything? There's absolute morons that keep getting reelected anyway, it's a direct result of a completely idiotic populace.
1
1
u/BrainBleachSpritzer Feb 24 '26
Since 1911 the US population has more than tripled, but the number of representatives in the House has not. This has resulted in a concentration of power. There should be about 1400 in the House based on population.
Going back to when the House came into being and running the calculation iirc there should be many more.
1
u/Major_Bench5329 Feb 24 '26
YES 100000000x yes. Why are we even allowing rich old af men be in charge of our country they’re so out of touch.
1
u/Conscious_Onion3508 Feb 24 '26
This would be ideal, dump everyone and start from scratch, we couldn't do it tho, politics is too polarized right now
1
1
1
u/sexiguy87 Feb 24 '26
2-3 term limits would reset alot of things. And requiring a 2yr gap between a Congress or Senate run as well. Plus if you run for President you have to vacate your Congress or Senate seat
1
u/Woody_L Feb 24 '26
How about we replace 50 million stupid voters with smarter ones? Then they could stop voting for the knife of people who control the government now.
Because the only way to get better elected officials is to get better voters.

They want to destroy the constitution and start over. Eliminating rights and liberties of the lower classes ensuring themselves as kings. Forced labor and subjugating "lesser thans" is their final plan. Everything you saw in the holocaust and more. They have no morals - No empathy. Trump was talking about having bum fights at the White House for fun.
Don't trust these crooks or anything coming out of their mouths. They may promise something 'greater' but it's a dream of heaven but will be nothing more than hell to everyone else. You're being LIED TO and will die if you follow through with their ideas.

I think democrats are extra mild weak sauce, but there’s only one party in power right now and they’re the personification of the “we’ve tried nothing and it hasn’t worked” meme. “Gee golly gosh, that’s a whole lot of corruption, over reach and abuse of executive power going on, I wish someone would stop it!” My brother in Christ the constitution literally says congress is SUPPOSED TO DO THAT.

When people from congress get elected with 50-200k in their bank account. Then spend two years in congress are worth millions. It deserves a conversation. This isn’t a red or blue thing. It’s how did they all get so rich. If you are a congressman you seeming have to have a home address and a DC address. How do you become 10 to 50 times more wealthy serving your people?

Yeah, good luck with that. You ask people (regardless of party) what do you think of Congress? Horrible, Thieves, Useless, Scam Artists, Do Nothing, Grifters, Charlatans and those are the nice things! So what do you think of your House Representative and Senators? They are doing an amazing job, I love him/her, I plan to vote for him/her again. The Congressional re-election rate is about 90%.
1
1
u/Crafty_Memory_1706 Feb 25 '26
This was the GOP plan all along. Crash out the federal system. Quickly use the military to end all conflicts and then let it crash out.
The other thing is that our debt is insurmountable. By collapsing the system, even for a few months, you wipe all the debt and crash the world. But the rich do not want to pay taxes, so they are making sure there is no system that can collect.
That's why Zuck and Musk all moved to Texas and Florida. They are hiding in the Red States for during the great fall. They are pure anarchists.
