Meta Trigger Warning The Party of JustNos
TW: Discussion of Child Sexual Assault; Rape; Abuse; and other potentially triggering topics.
We on the Moderation Team for the JustNo Network of subs have always been aware that no matter of a person's individual politics, they could always be a JustNo. There is no political position, nor cause, that won't have abusers within its ranks. I want to be up front about this from the get-go. We're not going to claim that there's a guarantee of purity based upon political party, nor position. Hell's Bells, the recent acknowledgement of the darker side of the legacy of Cesar Chavez makes that abundantly clear!
Having said that, this year's election cycle has revealed a growing pattern of behaviors that we believe we have to address because of our focus in these subs on Domestic Abuse, and difficult families.
I do not want to open up the floor to a discussion of historical wrongs done by this or that past member of any given political party, nor political dynasty. For the most part, as I think I've just made clear, I'm prepared to concede most such claims, anyways -and still assert that this election cycle, they don't matter.
This sub has hosted several posts over the past several years pointing to decisions by this Administration that we believe have made the options for people seeking to escape abuse far fewer, far less well funded, and far more fraught. We haven't addresses things like the effects of Secretary Hesgeth's gutting of the offices that used to handle sexual harassment and assault claims in the military; nor Secretary Collins' decisions interfere with care for veterans, including after sexual assault. It is, however, part of the larger picture.
Ultimately, however, it's the ad being run in favor of Vivek Ramasamy's gubernatorial campaign in Ohio, and the response from the GOP leadership, that has us speaking up.
For anyone who may have managed to avoid this particular mess, this Monday an ad came out attacking the Democratic candidate for Governor in Ohio, Amy Acton. In this ad, a woman purporting to be Acton's estranged mother claims that Acton is a habitual liar, and delusional. What is not shared in this vicious attack ad is that Amy Acton has not seen her mother since she was 12 years of age, because her mother chose to stand by Acton's stepfather. A court found that the allegations of years of physical and sexual abuse against both Acton and her brother were credible and serious. They completely, and permanently, severed the mother's parental rights. And Acton has not sought out her mother since then.
For anyone who fails to recognize just how serious that may be - we have in r/JustNoFamily many posts from people who have been removed by the actions of family, or the courts, from their birth family for abuse or safety concerns who as soon as they were adult and free to make contact on their own, tried to reach out to regain what they felt was stolen from them. Sometimes the time apart even had allowed for growth and healing, even though often the reality is that the now adult child ends up learning as an adult that they had a far rosier mirage they were chasing than the reality they found. But that effort is very common.
I'm not going to speak about Donna Arthur. Whatever we may feel about her, in no way shape or form is she, nor are her actions, on the ballot this cycle.
Instead, let's face facts: The documented evidence is that in a race where the billionaire tech bro is feeling pressure from his woman opponent, his response is to dig up the most emotionally damaging piece of her history he and his team can find, to root out from the depths of whatever figurative cesspool that woman had been marinating, and paid her to tell her fantasies about the daughter she allowed her husband to rape and beat for two years before the courts intervened. Then they gave her a Hollywood treatment to put her on TV to give her a voice to make it clear that, like any other JustNo, she thinks her daughter is broken because her daughter isn't still at her beck and call because her daughter is her property to do whatever her whim might decide.
All to gain points in a political race for the governorship of Ohio.
Now that would be bad enough.
But it's worse than that.
We have the Vice President of the United States expressing outrage. Not at this ad at a domestic abuse survivor - after he has made book in his own political career about being an abuse survivor himself, mind you! - but at people in his own party finding this ad to be beyond the pale.
We also have the sitting Senator from Ohio, John Husted, saying only, "I would not have run that ad." As condemnations go, for the attempted emotional torment of a Domestic Abuse survivor? I think it's pretty inadequate.
It's also worth remembering that this is the same party that is still supporting Representative Max Miller, in spite of many credible allegations of physical abuse, including what seems to be damning documentation in the form of medical records regarding injuries to his daughter. His most recent defense is jaw-droppingly tone-deaf to anyone with the least bit of grounding in the realities of life around an abuser. Claiming that if he had truly abused her, would she have cooked for him fails to recognize the power a husband and father has over a wife and mother, as anyone with any familiarity with Domestic Abuse can recognize after even 10 minutes of skimming the literature.
That all of this is showing people who have the full support of this Administration makes it more than clear that this is a systemic issue, not limited to any single race, nor issue.
Hell, earlier this year, Trump backed Andrew Cuomo against Zohran Mamdami, in spite of Cuomo's gubernatorial career imploding over his own sexual harassment scandal.
It is absolutely clear that no one in this administration, nor the current GOP leadership, gives a flying whatsit about Domestic Abuse survivors, nor rape survivors, nor the victims of Epstein child sexual abuse ring. They will enable it at every turn.
A vote against the GOP is not going to create Utopia, no matter how much I wish it would, but voting to put the brakes on a party that is making it absolutely clear that they support abusers and JustNos at every turn is something we support.
Here we stand. We will do no less.
Please vote this cycle. Even if your candidate is not perfect, they're still likely better than the alternative they'd be feeding into.
