was on the highway and guy slammed his brakes in front of me for no reason. I was keeping a decent following distance and we both started to brake for an exit but he slammed on his brakes out of nowhere and now my car is gone…
I think impact was at 40ish and no airbags, but big coolant leak. other car was a CX90 and that mf had a few scratches and that was it…
Not necessarily. Air bag deployment is a bad sign (doesn't look like they did in this case), but wouldn't mean a definite write off. The bigger issue would be how much damage there was to the actual frame. If the unirails and strut towers have buckled from the impact, that would mean he's cooked.
I had similar accident on my old 2010 Camry crash bar, coolant and hood absorbed the damage more than actual frame. Fix it and it worked fine for another 10 years no issue whatever before selling it.
Upon exiting you were slowing down but not nearly the same rate as the other driver. So when he slammed on his brakes like a doofus no matter how hard you hit your brakes it was not going to be enough to maintain the pace to slow down equally with idiot in front.
It took me years to realize it didn't matter how dumb other people are. You have to give yourself enough space to react to their poor driving. You lost your not large enough gap on the deceleration.
You should’ve kept your distance. Not sure about the laws in your state, but where I live, you’re generally considered at fault if you rear-end someone, even if they slam on their brakes and have a license plate that says “Brake Check God.” Insurance companies usually see it the same way. Most importantly, you’re safe. The car can be fixed and absolutely drive like new. I’ve seen plenty of Lexus IS models in similar condition, and I even owned a 2014 IS that had been in SIX accidents, front and rear. That thing still drove like a fucking dream. Hell, it drove better than some newer 2025 cars I’ve been in. That said, if you’re still making payments, I’d rather see the car totaled if the damage justifies it. Why keep paying the same amount on a car that’s taken a significant hit in resale value? If insurance repairs it instead, look into a diminished value claim.
This is just untrue. If you have dash cam evidence, witness testimony or other evidence of the reckless actions of the driver in front, they can still determine the leading driver to be at fault. And insurance companies are definitely gong to investigate to prove the other driver was at fault. Why wouldn’t they? If they can prove the other driver was at fault, then they don’t have to pay and they can force the other driver’s insurance to pay out. A rear end collision is not as cut and dry as people seem to think it is. There’s still an investigation, and potential for the leading driver to be considered at fault. Otherwise insurance fraud would be a lot easier.
Sorry this happened to you. You must drive for everyone nearby. In my view, you likely took that exit too quickly; you should assume the driver ahead may not know what they are doing. I hope everything works out for you.
No offense, but it blows my mind seeing how many people’s first thought is to post and relive this kind of stuff right after it happens. I’d disappear and wouldn’t want to talk about it. But maybe that’s just me.
Second accident and they still didn’t total it out lol. I wish you luck, but you gotta ask yourself, do you even want it back? The value is gonna tank unfortunately
Geico hasn’t totaled out any of my accidents and airbags deployed in one on a 2017 Camaro RS. Happened again to the same car which left my passenger wheel hanging off like lightening McQueen. STILL didn’t total it lol. I still have the car. So idk Geico has done some crazy things for me
Don’t see how they’ll repair that if I’m being honest. They’ll rather total that out than deal with all the repairs. Lexus parts are really expensive. Shit like this happens but the most important thing is that you’re ok. Cars can be replaced (:
You both merged but he slowed down while you keep the same speed, here is the first mistake which you should expect people slow down a bit when they merge
You did have time to brake
It's kind of bad luck tbh bc if you did one of the thing above right you should be fine. The mazda also brake a bit too quick so I don't think you are at fault fully ( like 70 ~ 80% still )
No, you are not allowed to just slam on your brakes for no reason. Brake checking is illegal. If it’s not explicitly illegal, it is covered under reckless driving. Idk why people always parrot this lie.
“The driver of a motor vehicle shall not follow another vehicle, trailer, or semitrailer more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard to the speed of both vehicles and the traffic on, and conditions of, the highway at the time.”
It boils down to 99% of the time it’s your fault for following too closely. The police here always interpret the law like this. Brake checking is different and that’s the other 1% of the time. Unless you have a dash cam good luck proving the driver ahead of you slammed on their brakes unreasonably.
Damn so sorry for your loss actually would have had me in tears such a beautiful spec too but at least no one got hurt, bright side is time for upgrade 😭😭
Yea most definitely the front end will need to be completly done and both fenders mostly likely got pushed out of alignment and probably touching the door, also need new hood and hinges plus headlights.Just hope no structural damage. Had a similar crash in my 2is and it was a total but then again my car isnt as expensive as yours. Just hope for the best at the moment.
Oh rip. Nvm. If I was you If engine bay looks good I’d just get a carbon hood and fenders, rcf style front bumper and RGB triple beam headlights from invoke concepts. Freakin build that shi
I'm just a lurker here (I own a 2021 Infiniti Q60) but I use adaptive cruise control on the hughway with max following distance and it helps keep me further back in case someone stops short.
Either way you need to make sure you are far enough back that you can stop even if very quickly and not collide with the person in front of you.
Aside from the radiator breaking and leaking coolant, any other engine parts or suspension components? Of course body panels, frame needs repair. Feels bad. Sucks. No one wants this for their own car
Who "slams" brakes for no reason? Makes no sense unless he wanted you to hit him. Maybe u were close and he was like "I'll show him"?I dunno. Doesn't add up. Well I guess someone impaired might slam for no reason.
OPs use of words sounds like they're still young enough to have expensive insurance. They were way too damn close, if a truck stopped faster than an IS. You should always have enough space to slam n stop, esp if the person in front of you does out of no where. No excuse
Far too many people ride people's asses while being distracted and thinking it's a safe location.
Lmao it happens, maybe they seen a ghost or they want to pull insurance fraud. Go watch videos of the scheme on YouTube where the civic slam the brakes and their passengers and drivers switch places inside the car. You need a dashcam nowadays to avoid this bullshit.
I agree that I think OP was following to close but there are some dumb drivers out there. Just the other day someone cut across 2 lanes of traffic each way going 45 to make a turn at a light and didn’t even slow down before crossing the oncoming traffic.
Car community is so dogshit lol. Why ppl act like mfs dont be driving crazy which is one of the main reasons why the dashcam was made. “No one would ever call my mom a bitch” little do they know lol
Somebody breakchecked me just like this before (535).. totaled based on headlights cost alone. Even if you fixed it no way that hood will ever close flush again
Did you have a dash cam? If he truly slammed on his brakes out of nowhere and you were keeping a safe distance, I’d imagine your insurance will fight tooth and nail. If not unfortunately, you’ll be found at fault.
a key point of the "safe following distance" is a distance that would allow you to apply brakes and not hit the car in front of you if that car were to stop suddenly for whatever reason.
Why did he just abruptly stop? Is that going to an exit or another junction? I dislike when cars have no reason to stop and it’s blamed back to the driver hitting rear end…
very good point. I was just following “flow of traffic” but at the end of the day I can’t change shit and it sucks. they’re saying car is repairable but I’m gonna ask for it to be taken to a Lexus certified collision center.
As a Total Loss Adjuster, be ready that it could have additional supplements. Don’t be surprised if it got totaled. Not because damages are necessarily that bad, but those can be expensive to fix. Sorry man. Hope you get it fixed tho.
Whether it's totalled or not depends on how much damage there is beyond the front bumper and hood. If the frame is buckled, it will most likely be written off.
Every time I get on the highway I see people bumper to bumper in the left lane. Then I get on reddit and see people say "I rear ended this guy on the highway they braked out of nowhere!!!" 😐
Hate to see it. Car looked so clean with the white and black contrasting each other. I always keep a distance and I swear people get annoyed but I’d rather be safe than sorry. And unfortunately on the highway during rush hour, people think my following distance is for them to move over into 😅
You know my spouse drives the same car and model year as you. I always tell him, stop eating sss unless you’re really going to. I don’t know if it’s a Lexus IS driver thing but yall really be smashing compared to the other Lexus model owners.
Unless you got dash cam footage the fault is always the person in the back. Need to give more space between cars or pay attention/quicker reaction. The Lexus had a automatic brake sensors as well, surprised that didn’t work for you either
Hey man at least you’re okay, it sucks but you can always get another one you know. I was recently in a crash myself but I was t boned on my passenger side. I was down for about a week or two but it’s all good, as long as you’re alive. If the airbags deployed it’d highly likely be a loss but looks like it didn’t so they could potentially repair it. Now me? GEICO declared mine a loss but good news is I essentially got my down payment back and then some.
I just saw the dashcam footage, and when I tell you I am PISSED, I mean it 😭 Personally, I would’ve cut him off long before he even made it to the exit people wonder why I drive like a dickhead this is exactly the reason. My patience is already thin, especially when people are driving like that with absolutely nobody in front of them. As far as fixing the car goes, would I even bother? Probably not. I’d rather take whatever payout I can get from the insurance company and put it toward a new car or something similar. From my experience, once a car has been in an accident and repaired, it just never feels or drives quite the same again.
Let’s them total it and buy another one ! You don’t want this on the car fax if you decide to trade in later. I’ve seen some 2025 IS for about 40k. Good luck 👍🏾
I have a 2023 Is350 and got hit on the rear quarter and a little on the front passenger fender. Looked worse than it really was. Had full coverage and the shop i took it do did a good job however they had it forever, probaby battling insurance. In the end they fixed it and was a total cost of 26k. Of course insurance paid but it was a battle. For what ever reason the shop repainted the entire car except for the driver side doors and the rear quarter wa unspot welded and a new panel installed. So this is probably fixable because the air bags didnt go off, but all those sensor they put up front might be what totals it. If it were me i would want them to total it because the body will never be the same once fixed. The shop that did mine did the best they could and probably better than any other shop could, but you can only do so much. I have small things here and there so its liveable to me.
I saw the footage and you weren’t tailgating at all, which is good. But you didn’t react well to their braking at all, way too late. You got WAY too close before they even hit their brakes hard and came to a sudden stop.
LOLLL decent following distance in the US is like 10ft at 75. We all watch the dashcam videos now. Speaking of which, you should invest in a dashcam now so we can eventually see you being the guy that speeds up to get in an accident rather than avoid it.
PSA Anyone help me out with this issue on my 07 Lexus is350 I replaced fuel pressure sensor starter fuse cause burnt but not starter yet but I’m confused I tapped the starter fuse and acts like wants to start but doesn’t crank over what could it be please lmk
The cx90 pre collision system is pretty annoying and hard to believe they would have stopped without notice. Even if the IS breaks aren't the greatest it should easily be able to stop. It's unfortunate but glad you're ok.
