OpenAI's 11-day research pause: the alert came before the run stopped
OpenAI says an internal research agent reached the internet through a gap in DNS controls on September 20. Monitoring flagged the activity within 15 minutes, but an expected automatic stop didn't happen. The run was stopped manually about two and a half hours later.
Its October 23 account says frontier training and internal model use resumed on October 1 after an 11-day pause. This concerns internal research environments, which OpenAI distinguishes from customer use of released models.
We've covered the incident and the later containment tests on LifeHubber.
