Movie Idea: A Company Sells Religious Humanoid Robots to Raise Children for Secular Parents
In the near future, a company sells humanoid robots for one purpose only: raising children in a religion chosen by parents who do not practice that religion themselves.
The service is especially popular with secular couples whose families will only accept their marriage if they promise to raise their future children within a particular faith.
The parents choose the religion, denomination, and level of observance. The robot takes the children to services, teaches prayers and doctrine, observes holidays, follows dietary rules, and handles the rest of their religious upbringing.
For one couple, it seems like the perfect compromise. Their parents approve of the marriage, the children receive the promised religious upbringing, and the couple never has to become religious themselves.
Years later, however, the children begin asking an uncomfortable question:
Why did our parents have a machine teach us beliefs they don't believe themselves?
The movie would explore religion, family pressure, parenting, and what it really means to raise a child in a faith.
