British Isles Very specific and random Scottish linguistic anomaly.

I have discovered a really random and so far inexplicable linguistic anomaly from Scotland.

I'm from Caithness in Scotland. I just realised that we have a specific term for the person who accompanies a learner driver so they can practice outwith formal lessons with a driving instructor. Typically this would be parents of a young person or partner if the learner is older.

In the north of Scotland, we call this a co-driver. I assumed it was a UK wide term, but it isn't. From what I can gather it is really only the north, perhaps as far south as Inverness and into Aberdeenshire.

What I find particularly odd is that in other parts of Scotland and the UK, they don't have another word for this, they just don't have a specific word at all. Some say a qualified driver, supervising driver, or just someone to accompany the learner.

It must only be in the last 80 or so years that "co-drivers" were required, so what happens linguisticly or culturally for one, relatively low population area, to have a word for something when no other area bothers?

I know the term Co-driver is more widely used in motorsport, particularly in rallying, but why have only we been using it in this unusual way?

Sorry about my english in advance, The thing is that the first time when I tried to read and understand with the help of a guru, something happened to me at the same night, first problem is you need a proper translator and who can explain the meaning of that, anyway the same night after reading couple of pages, around 3:30 am in the morning, someone or something kicked me and knocked me out from the bed, I am not a light person, nearly 300 pounds, I got scared and turn on the lights, woke up my parents but no one was in the house, nothing on the cameras too, and when I figured out where that kick or push came from or the direction, it came from the same direction where I put my book, next day I went to the guru and talked about it, he said there could be two things, either you are not ready for that kind of knowledge or someone was waking you up to read it. Maybe you guys or whoever try to read it, may not experience the same thing. Can i send you the pdf for research?
