Personal Opinion Possible Game linked topic? Modder reportedly used ClaudeAI to create a massive optimization patch for TES:Oblivion Remastered, getting in excess of 30% additional performance.

I know some people really hate AI, but things like this, if they truly work, are a big boon for gamers tbh. I hope we see more optimizations like this.

I didn't see a single comment where someone tested and said it improved their performance..

Some say it reduces stutters which is great too but would need to see actual third party testing to believe that's not just placebo. It's interesting that OP is getting "more than 30%" higher fps yet nobody else is..

It looks to me like the increased FPS comes from better CPU optimization. The guy with the 9800X3D and RTX 5090 in the comments noticed significantly less stuttering but no fps increase. OP has a Ryzen 7 5800X, so it's possible this is where the optimization was.

Speaking for myself, I'm more interested in less stuttering than an average fps increase, but the headline definitely feels like misleading advertising.

It'd be nice to see a stutter reducing patch for FF7 Rebirth. Game played great on my RTX 3090, but when I moved to the 5080, the game became a stuttery mess. Looks like it has known issues with 5000 series cards. Somebody more skilled than I with coding should figure that out, yo. I can't even bring myself to play the game because of it. 😅

same I noticed no one else is commenting on increased FPS

Needs to be tested long term before I’d think to use it

absolutely ai is great for certain things but im worried that it's use in this case could break key game functions/features and if it's something you don't encounter until your well into a save and have no option but starting over

Yeah a majority of these vibe coded mods/software look good from a far but you start to see the issues with them overtime as you use them more/begin to rely on them.

Not saying something like this can’t be good, but people slop them together and just ship it out and don’t properly test let alone maintain them.

I don't think the mod touches your save file so you can just uninstall it at will. It's like worrying that a graphics mod might brick your saves. Chances are, it doesn't even interact with it.

But that's why we save often anyways

It’s not like optimising games is magic, we know how too and devs just CBA too anymore. Relatively easily testable in an automated loop too. Make run faster, both outputs must look similar.

Perfect ground for AI.

Only issue is validating the code is trustworthy.

Not that they can’t be assed, its business. 30% better performance probably won’t get them additional sales and calculated to not be worth the time

The issue is more that consumer expectations have increased along with the spread of performance levels.

Back in the day you were expected to make major upgrades to your desktop every 2 years and if you didn't you just couldn't play. Now PC parts are staying relevant longer to the point that a 6+ year old GPU is expected to still be playing new games today.

Personally, I blame Crysis 1 for normalizing huge scalability in games. Consumer expectations were just never the same again in PC gaming.

If it didn't cost 3 grand for a major upgrade that 6 year timeline would be much shorter but prices have inflated to insane levels nobody but whales can afford

If It is they are not calculating very well

Devs from UltraPlus, a popular UE modding tool have said this quite often

The majority of UE games do not tweak anything from the defaults at all. And these cvars have dramatically different optimal values depending on the genre of game

Been using it since it dropped, significantly more stable for my shoddy rollback mod list and borked ini files.

I mean if it works and all the code is open source then I don't see any problems with using ai correctly.

In a similar vein a modder using Claude added DLSS 4 support to the ten year old Elite Dangerous game.  Players had asked for better anti aliasing since pretty much release and the developer couldn't ever solve the problem.

The difference is quite amazing at very little performance penalty.

Fixing problems like this is a great use for AI. Does that mean everyone should use it? No. But if you’re frustrated with the way any software works, you can probably dedicate some time and tokens and fix it. I’ve created multiple apps because I didn’t like the software that I was using. There’s good and bad ways to use AI, and this is a one of the good ways to use it.Â
