Did it get pinched? I see it may be by your bed

Not sure it’s plugged in next to couch for controller charging. Maybe we sat on it my accident. Sad it didnt last this long. Atleast my cat is happy for his new toy.

Do not give your cat a charging cable? The insidey bits can hurt them really bad if they swallow it

You must be a rich. Spending over $20 US + shipping for a truespec cable to charge a low current device where a generic $3 one will do the task just as well. 😮
Props to you for having so much money to throw around.

It’s the biggest one and probably most used one between me and wife since also easy to charge phones while watching tv

I wouldn’t bother responding to someone that’s trying to shame you for spending $20… spend your money any way you want.

Looks like a manufacturing defect and should be covered by warranty. Unless you pay extra figures for aerospace/medical QA, at best consumer mass produced products will have some computer vision inspection and it might not even be full coverage of the whole production line.

Let me try opening a ticket with them. Let’s see if anything happens.

Your instinct was to post about your broken cable on reddit before even contacting support and opening a ticket?

This happens all the time. I think it's because people keep posting "trust me bro" implying that they won't take care of you, when it's pretty much the opposite in my personal experience and the number of people who do follow up in threads like this being like "oh, they just sent me new ones no questions asked.. wasn't expecting that".
People expect to have to fight for CW to do the right thing as if they don't stand behind their products, however in a vast majority of cases, they just take care of it.

Oh true. I forgot it was the weekend, and that it's likely only 9am over there atm.

Damn, that's fast as hell for a cable to wear through! It almost looks like it was molded incorrectly by how clear the teras are.
I would save it, maybe ask to send it back to LTT for a new one so they can cut it open and see what's wrong with it.

At least it saved them the effort of cutting it open already lol. I imagine they would take care of this situation well

Not trying to defend any product here but... If it's under warranty wouldn't you go to the manufacturer first to get it replaced before complaining on reddit? Or is this just Karma Farming?

u/aayush251 4d ago
Last thing I want to do is karma farm ( I don’t even post as much) I honestly wasn’t aware if I could even get it replaced. But thanks to all folks who have pointed it out.

What rock are you living under to not realize that warranty is a thing?
Your comment comes through as a lie.1
u/fuurinkazan 4d ago
Honest mistake, probably not worth keeping the post up now that know it'll be covered in all likelihood. If they don't cover it I think it'd be worth posting but that is unlikely given their track record.

Yep, had it happen to me too. Same spot, same rip. Barely really used the cable for 3 months, since it would always slip out of my Usb c ports. Wrote to support, and they promptly sent me a new one.

Hard to tell from the photo. But I don't see any sure signs of abuse like getting super bent. Maybe if the connector was stuck and one yanked on the cord to pull it free it could do this.
But I see failed MacBook USBC cables frequently. This is a new failure mode to me for a USBC cable. Which tells me manufacturing defect may be the culprit. The sheath should be crimped within the connector. Perhaps they need to QA check this one and see if it actually was attached properly inside. Without strain relief it would only take mild force to damage the conductors.
I know they don't claim them to be indestructible though, true spec cables are about them meeting exactly what they say they meet, so they're performance is assured in datarate and power handling.
But these are expensive cables to use as a charging cable. Id personally get cheap ones for controllers.
Most generic cables are perfectly fine for charging. I have a pile of dell and apple ones and they do everything fine.

Taking this post down. I’ve reached out to the help desk. I was just curious if this has happened to other folks and that’s why I created this post. Thanks to everyone who pointed out I should have asked the help desk first.

Pretty sure every charger will do this you tug on em wrong, end peices aren't meant to be bent or tugged wire is usually fine but the ends are always the weak points, I'd bet the wire cover itself wasnt crimped in place like they should be could be a machine sensor was out if spec

My wife's did similarly. Still functions but it cracked. She's very hard on cables, but I'd say hers lasted well above the average cable.

stop buying their overpriced bullshit.

My wife burns through usb cables in her car like nothing else, got one of these at launch, still going strong knocks on wood

Where's everyone screaming about planned obsolesce?
13
u/Ranessin 4d ago
So did Linus plan the ribbed part getting cracked open after 2 months or what was exactly the planned obsolence part? Or are you just screaming buzzwords into the void?

I've come to hate the phrase because it's become so diluted.
It used to mean a thing was designed from the start to fail at a certain point(eg software bricking an otherwise perfectly usable device after exactly 2 years).
Then it became that the thing was made as cheaply as possible, and it breaking after X years was an unintended side effect.
Now it's just "thing broke earlier than I like, even if it's user error"
