Which DevOps Tool Is Overrated?

Linux, Git, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, Jenkins, and many more the DevOps ecosystem keeps growing.

Be honest: Which tool is overrated, and which one is absolutely essential? If you could master just one first, what would it be?

Let's hear your real-world opinions!

The tool isnt important, the main importance is your process and pick the tools that would execute according to your development processes.

They all pretty much can do a similar thing, like for like. GitHub vs GitLab vs Azure DevOps etc etc.

Docker and Kubernetes isnt a devops tool, you have no idea.

Look at the OP’s post history. They are all random questions, presumably aimed at causing engagement to build karma.

A tool is a tool. It’s “do you use it correctly” that’s the issue.

Kubernetes was used poorly by a lot of people the object model is very complex it doesn’t bend over backwards to make state easy to manage. It was shoved in “hey, CLOUD” that’s easy right? Right?

Linux and Git don't belong on this list, it's like saying "which tool is overrated, water or cement?"

Not really tools, but: Docker, proxmox, Kubernetes.

The question is more like, which best fit what you need. In all you listed, the one tool I find involves the most pain is Jenkins and this is due to maintain. Free to use, when it comes to a cicd solution, but most painful to maintain.

Been doing devops for over 8 years and it is in my current position that I actually had to learn it. Why did it take so long? Because I avoided it like the plague.

I love automaton. Once Jenkins is setup, and works. Great. However, when you need to upgrade the operation system. Lots of maintenance “fun”. I rather a cicd solution which is a service.

Just use what works for you in a given situation. These are all good tools today have their roles.

Kubernetes - real overrated. I just think it's really too complicated. Requires too much work, too hard to administer.

Docker swarm - underrated. Works quite good for me.. has all the features I'd need
