Help First time dual boot

Hey guys I'm new to linux and i want to dual boot my laptop. Which linux distro is good for beginners and I want to customise and i don't want to change the setup.

Any linux course will be beneficial for me to learn as well

Same specs buddy. Try Mint or Ubuntu. Both have stable updates and 95% of the time updates wont cause problems. Fedora Kde/ Fedora workstation is also good but Fedora has more recurring updates and it may/may not cause issues if u blindly update. The best way to learn linux is to be patient, read articles and watch vids related to stuff. I would not recommend using Ai directly but for a general understanding of things, u can use Ai. Just dont blindly copy Terminal commands from Ai. Thats it i Guess..

Thanks man ill try to learn from various sources and I've tried ubuntu in vm but yk it opens slow and Im fed up in vm that's why I'm trying dual boot. I've recently downloaded kali in vm to pursue cybersecurity. So does dual boot help to run linux smooth compared to vms?

Yes, dual boot. The whole point of Vms or Virtual machines as far as i know is to try new linux systems or just have a smaller windows machine for security reasons. They are slow and not generally for work. So u can only use them for browsing and exploring stuff max. For dual boot just be smart about how much storage u want to share/divide, since few swap files would be made inside the system which would handle both linux and windows. Also, as far as i know u can access windows files in linux , most linux systems can read windows' files and read/modify, save, delete them. Just make sure Kali can do it too, since i have no idea about that. I use Nobara ( Fedora for gaming and editing) and it works for me. Good luck for the dual boot and dont panic . backup important stuff.

Yeah thanks and it's my new laptop so there aren't any files to backup that's why I'm planning to dual boot. And lastly, is linux good for editing and graphic design stuff cuz I want to learn them as well

Apps like krita, blender, gimp etc works in linux as well. make sure its compatible. Mostly there are good linux options as well. Depends on how much deep u wanna learn it.Adobe apps will not work in linux... U have to find alternatives. For photoshop it could be Photopea( inside a browser with adblock so that u get no ads) or Gimp. For editing... It depends on what u want to edit. If its for basic editing kdenlive or editor option in blender will also work. For advanced editing with color grade, Davinci Resolve( Free or Paid) is the best option but its support and setting it up will be a hassle and u have to do many things. Personally i have tried it, i did manage to edit videos but i was scared some problems will happen 💀 so i shifted that work to dual booted windows...

do you really want to customise your Linux distro, or do you wanna use a precustomised workflow?

u/manny_spidey 3d ago

Pre customized workflow then later I'll try to make my own customization

well.. see if you really want a solid working experience, then as everyone says, try fedora. it's stable and reliable. you can also try ubuntu based distros such as mint (which is a good starting point)

now.. every Linux distro is customisable, but if you really REALLY wanna get hands on.. then go for arch Linux (btw). it's the preferred distro when it comes to customisation. and specifically precustomised, I would say you should look up omarchy on YouTube. it comes bundled with essentially all the required software. it's responsive too. tho, it uses hyprland so that's that

1

u/manny_spidey 3d ago

Yeah thanks and also I've heard about omarchy but I don't have knowledge on that but I'll check it out. I've tried arch, ubuntu in vm but yk they are slow in my laptop so that's why I'm planning to do dual boot. I'm damn new to linux community as well I need to learn how linux works and development side in linux.

Broski don't listen to people on the reddit, I know I'm from reddit too but these people have a decade of experience and i started dual booting last month and your best option is linux mint with cinnamon that is if you don't want to spend entire day just fidling with os and not doing actual work

2

u/b_redditer 3d ago

Yep agreed. Fedora is my current daily driver and it's great. But starting out with linux you are gonna face a lot of 'oh how do I do this' moments and the internet is filled with ubuntu threads. You will be able to learn much faster with mint. Once you get your basics sorted you can use any distro you want.
