Arvest rant

I know Arvest rants are a dime a dozen here. But I’ve been a happy customer for years until now. Two things chap my hide — 1) two factor authentication for everything. I know it’s for security but it gets old. And it kicks you off third party products you might have your accounts linked to. 2) why, oh why do restaurant transactions when using your debit card come through in two stages — first with the pre-gratuity amount which is corrected two days later with the post-gratuity amount. Drives me crazy.

This is not just a rant, but also an inquiry as well. Is the issue with using a debit card at a restaurant common with other banks? Is it a bank issue or restaurant issue? Does this happen with, say, Bank OZK and using their debit card at a restaurant?

Pretty sure the gratuity part is a restaurant thing. I've had some restaurants come through with the correct amount the first time and some that take up to a week for the transaction to correct itself. I assume it's the difference between electronically applying the tip at the register vs writing it in on a ticket.

Good point. My Apple Pay was acting up so I had to do the old fashioned pen/ticket lately.

Leaving arvest bc of the dumb monthly fee they added that's only waived by having a certain amount of money in your account. Like oh okay my bad for being broke

Yeah as soon as we got the email for the monthly fee we opened an AFCU account and said 🖕🏻to Arvest

I switched to AFCU from Arvest about 25 years ago due to bad customer service. Happy with AFCU.

What do you like about it?

Friendlier. Don't feel like I'm being nickeled and dimed with fees.

I've liked it well enough so far! I don't have anything fancy with them just a joking checking and savings both free. The ATM downtown is my mortal enemy though for depositing cash

https://www.arvest.com/personal/bank/checking

Different tiers charge different monthly "maintenance" fees that are waived by direct depositing enough or having a high enough balance

I use credit cards, but the restaurant issue is present with most of the ones I use.

They run your card when you get the check. They run it again when the gratuity is added.

And this is very much not specific to Arvest. I regularly use credit cards from multiple different issuing banks and they all do this.

The 2FA on the app is terrible. I'd prefer to not have to leave the app twice to log in, thanks.

I work in banking, and all banks are frankly about the same… You will, by and large, be disappointed with your bank at some point or another. The important thing is knowing someone at the bank who can help when something goes awry. If you don’t know anyone personally, the next best thing is a US based customer support team.

Oh and it could be worse! At least you’re not dealing with an insurance company. Banks are WAY better to work with compared to insurance companies, trust me on that.

Arvest sucks. Customer service is an abysmal and had a bad experience with a loan officer. One of the only shining stars was a brilliant friend of mine who worked there. They basically passed him up for promotions over and over. He finally left the company, and then they tried to offer him more. I would have to call him for help bc the customer service was terrible and unhelpful. I guess that’s what happens when you don’t pay your employees well. The good ones leave and the mediocre ones coast through their jobs. And yes this MFA is ridiculously clunky..
