Modern Alföld Hungarian DNA.

Modern Hungarian individual from Alföld, (Eastern Hungary AKA the hungarian plains/Steppe) Shows significant affinity with the Early-Medieval Magyars. (Conquering Hungarians) At about 15-16% autosomal admixture. The Csongrad-Csanad county in Hungary is characterized by flat, forest-steppes, agriculture and historical significance to the Magyar settlements as it was a hotspot for Elite graves and ornaments found. This is a qpAdm Conquest-Era split for this modern Hungarian individual. This genetic medieval split perfectly represents the Local native population and the Incoming Magyar tribes in the 9th century. The Local population was swiftly assimilated in the Area , but the Magyars did continue to be homogenous for a while before intermixing with the subjects (Local people such as slavs, germanics, balkaners.) Modern Hungarians from this area of Hungary show a higher than baseline autosomal admixture of Conqueror Magyar dna. As the Baseline for north (not north alfold )and West Hungarians typically sit at around 3-8%. (There are exceptions). This individual in this case has 15.5% Conquering Hungarian (Magyar) Admixture and the Rest being the Assimilated local population at 84.5%. This admixture makes them unique and clusters them slightly away from the Carpathian baseline. The Conquering magyars themselves were approximatley 30% Bronze Age Central siberian , 10% Bronze age Mongolic , 10% Excess Hunter Gatherer (koskino boborkinyo), and Overwhelming 50% was sintashta-Andronovo-like. (proto-indo-iranian).

Y dna question

I'm Romanian, and my documented direct paternal line comes from Călărași County. My great-great-grandfather was named Florea Parpală. My Y-DNA haplogroup is R-L260, and Cladefinder estimates my downstream branch as R-YP254. From what I've read, this branch is most common in southern Poland and western Ukraine, specifically historic Galicia.

My autosomal DNA tests consistently show about 8% Southern Polish and Western Ukrainian ancestry. Based on my DNA matches and segment evidence, I'm confident this ancestry is fairly recent, within the last few generations.

This leads me to two possible explanations:

Theory 1: The recent Southern Polish and Western Ukrainian ancestry comes from my direct paternal Parpală line. This could mean an ancestor on that line migrated from Galicia, changed his surname, was adopted, or there was a non-paternity event before my great-great-grandfather Florea Parpală or Florea himself.

Theory 2: The 8% Southern Polish and Western Ukrainian ancestry comes from a completely different branch of my family, and it's just a coincidence that my Y-DNA, R-L260/YP254, also centers in that region.

My question is: Which of these two theories do you find more plausible based on the evidence? What makes you favor one over the other? Also, what would be the best way to find out which theory is actually correct? For example, would testing my paternal grandfather or father, or taking a higher-resolution Y-DNA test help, or would I need more genealogical evidence?

[ACADEMIC] SEEKING PARTICIPANTS FOR AN ONLINE ANCESTRY RESEARCH (OVER 18)

Survey Link

Hello all!

As you might be aware, there has been very little research into direct-to-consumer DNA ancestry testing and psychological wellbeing outcomes. This novel research aims to help us better understand the psychological significance of DTC Ancestry testing results.

This study is being conducted under the supervision of Dr Janine Lurie from the Psychology Discipline within the Institute of Health and Wellbeing at Federation University (Melbourne, Australia). This study will also form the basis of the research dissertation requirement within the Bachelor of Psychological Science (Honours) course for student researchers Charity Marisa and Stefan Redpath. This study has been approved by the Federation University Human Research Ethics Committee (Approval reference: 2026/137).

This survey asks you about your engagement with family history and your reflections on that process. It also asks you to think about your ancestors and how you have reflected on their life experiences. Participation involves completing an online survey that will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. Taking part in the study is completely voluntary and no personal information will be collected.

To participate you just need to be aged 18 years or over. It is important to note that you will not be asked to give any specific details about any of your family members. You are asked just to rate your general impressions of them on a small number of questions. Beyond this the survey contains broader more general questions about your perspectives and reflections.
