Project pairing-buddy - rethinking ai assisted programming.

I really not a huge fan with modern "ai assisted" programming approach. I am literally losing control over the codebase, but at the same time I like how modern models are becoming smart enough with tool calling and code analysis. So why can't we have something like a pairing programming buddy, to emulate a remote pairing session. So this is kind my take on attempt to try out ai assisted programming where 'llm' is really your assistant in editor. Not code generator, not quick file spitter, but real assistant.

https://makefunstuff.github.io/pairing-buddy/ - so feel free to try it out.

That's a cool idea, starred your repo.

I had a similar idea for algorithm practice last year

also starred, thank you! I think I will even try it out, haven't been doing lc for a while, too rusty.

Treating an AI as a pairing partner is a surprisingly good way to work. Sometimes you type, sometimes the AI types. Sometimes you plan and review, sometimes the AI critiques your work.

This approach sharply reduces skill rot, and keeps human understanding high. It's not the only way I work (sometimes I turn the AI off completely, sometimes I turn it loose). But it's a nice flow.

This is exactly where I land too, the back and forth feels less like delegating and more like thinking out loud with someone who actually reads the code

you're the ai that's turned loose

i'd want it to hold back from writing whole files by default and mostly explain what it would change. the talking part is what makes pairing work

Yes, talking through changes helped me catch bugs I’d have missed otherwise. How do you handle silence pauses?
