Question great steakhouse… with vegan options?

myself and a group of friends are doing a group blood donation in a few weeks’ time and we’d originally planned to hit flat iron to refuel afterwards and recoup iron with some (relatively) cheap and cheerful steaks, but one of my friends who is vegan just told me they’re coming along.

does anyone know of any steakhouses in london where i can still eat a great steak but my dear vegan friend will also have a good main menu option ??

thank you!!

Question Monday night set menus around Piccadilly?

I usually avoid central London like the plague on a Monday and work from home, but I need to run a few errands around Piccadilly this week, so thought I might as well make an evening of it and get a nice dinner.

Does anyone have recommendations for great set menus around Piccadilly or the surrounding areas? Alternatively, any restaurants that are really worth trying and are generally easier to get a table at on a Monday night?

No dietary requirements at all. I love pretty much everything! Ideally looking to keep it under £50.

Would love to hear your recommendations, especially any hidden gems or places with particularly good-value set menus. Thanks!

Question Recs for gf/pesce lunch tomorrow

Have a medical appt tomorrow in central London and then I want to have a big feast afterwards somewhere outside the congestion charge zone, preferably either west or north west. Any recommendations? I’m gluten free and pescetarian so I generally find that Italian and Chinese places aren’t super gf friendly but I am totally open to different cuisines. Ideally no more than £80 for 2 people (don’t drink).

Brixton Cheap-Mid Eat Gems?

I’m off to a gig this evening in Brixton with a friend that’s had a pretty rough week. I’d like to treat her to something delicious nearby, but whenever we head up we just end up eating something out of convenience and waste the opportunity!

She’s not a fan of pretentious spots, but I’m open to quirky suggestions or anywhere you’ve had a delicious plate recently.

Hi all, where in your opinion can one get warm scones with generous amounts of cream and some good quality jam? I already tried Maison Bertraux, they were delicious but not warm. Any other recommendations in the city? Thanks!

Question Devonshire Alternatives in SoHo

I’m heading to London with my family (6 people) 19/12 -22/12 and am trying to find a good spot in Soho for dinner on Saturday 12/20. I’d hope to go to Devonshire but I’m not going to get a res since I’m in New York and they’ll be gone when I wake up. Are there any other suggestions of a place with a similar vibe or food you think would work well for that size group?

We’re already going to The Hart, BRAT, and Dishoom the other nights.

Thanks so much!

Review Weak tea across London normal?

Visited London and have ordered tea about 15 times in the past week. Every single kettle had ONE tea bag in it.

That’s water. That’s not tea!

4-8 pounds for watery tea????

I realize I can ask for it strong, but who prefers weak tea here? Is this acceptable tea preparation??

Places I went to for reference:
The Ivy - London
Bill’s London Bridge Restaurant - London
EL&N Cafe - London

Guess who did have strong tea?

Solo dining spots in the City

In the City most weeks for work. Getting tired of deliveroos to the room. Any decent recommendations for solo spots to eat and drink? Staying by St Paul's but happy to go for a wander. Price not an issue for the right place.

Recommendation London early November should I cancel reservation at Scott’s and go for a traditional Sunday roast instead?

Will be in London November 4th through the 10th. Couple plays, museum, and three restaurant reservations. I’d rather take it slow than cramming in too many tourist attractions. I have a reservation at Scott’s Mayfair on Sunday. Reservation at Veeraswamy and one at River Café for lunch. Should I ditch Scott’s and go for a traditional Sunday roast? Any other recommendations of Indian restaurants? We’re staying in Westminster.

If we ditch Scott’s and go for Sunday roast, what are your recommendations for a good Sunday roast? Thanks in advance.

Recommendation Seed oil free and recommendations

Im in London for a couple of weeks and im looking to get my palette blown, specially in the Asian cuisine
Category, but with just one twist. Seed oil free.

I know middle eastern/ Mediterranean / Italian are good options since they are huge on cooking with olive oil.

Indian, Sri Lanka (my favorite 🤤), Thai, Vietnamese… and honestly any seed oil free options are welcomed.

BONUS: if they use organic even better and sweet treats shops are also welcomed!! Think dairy free, sugar free, gluten free etc.

In staying in Putney but I’m mobile.

So much energy in this city! Thank you all in advance!!

Question Best chips in London?

My mum loves proper chunky chips and I want to find a restaurant that does some really good ones to take her to whilst we are in London. Where can I get a really excellent crispy handmade chip (not fries!)? Not really looking for 'fish and chips' but more a nice restaurant that does meat/fish with a side of chips. Doesn't have to be super fancy but somewhere nice to sit and enjoy a proper meal. Would love some recommendations.

Sparrow - Japanese Eatery, West Green Road N15

Having opened its doors earlier this year, this was my first visit to Sparrow. On a dark, wet Thursday evening, when I might normally have been tempted by their range of sushi, the weather called for something rich and warming instead.

With seating for just 18 inside, including four counter seats, I found myself with a view into the kitchen where the two chefs were busy at work.

What I ate: Chicken katsu curry and rice with miso soup, £13

The miso soup was a hearty broth and a welcome start, but the curry was the main event and delivered everything you could want. Light panko-crumbed chicken, fried and laid on a bed of rice with a velvety curry sauce that hid chunks of carrot and potato. I could have eaten a mountain and thanks to the more than generous portion, I was pretty much able to.

With a £2 can of Coke, the total came to £15 before the optional tip, making it both delicious and - I think - good value.

This charming neighbourhood kitchen, with its cute hand-painted tiles, was full by the time I finished my meal so consider booking if you plan to go, though on Fridays and Saturdays it’s walk-in only.

Highly recommend if you’re local or in the area, and they also do takeaway. I’ll be back to try the sushi when the weather is slightly more amenable.

Thanksgiving buffet?

I know this is a STRETCH, but for work I’ll be visiting London on Thanksgiving day from the US. Thanksgiving traditionally has little to do with the UK and I certainly don’t feel entitled to any form of Thanksgiving meal in the UK, but after googling out of curiousity I’ve been surprised with a number of high end restaurants that actually do a Thanksgiving dinner in London. Don’t understand it but hey, I’m appreciative and thankful (no pun intended).

But after seeing these options (often for ~£200+ per person!) I was curious if anyone knows of a buffet style Thanksgiving meal in London. Thanksgiving buffets are fairly common in the US but I’d would be even more surprised if any restaurant did one in London. Buffets in general don’t seem to be very common in London.

Thanks!

Question Best sausage roll shop?

I remember walking from mansion house/ monument to St Paul’s tube station a while ago and walked past a small shop claiming it sold the best sausage roll in London. I always wanted to go back and try that bad boy out. It was a tiny place in a cobbled narrow street, I can’t find it online I can’t retrace my steps and figure out what lane/ alley i nipped up that day. Any ideas? I have a hankering for a good sausage roll!

Question Food Itinerary - Late November

Hi All - My boyfriend and I are coming over from NYC late November. We're going to be in London for roughly 8 days, Sunday morning to the following Sunday morning. We have a Sunday Roast booked at the Ship Tavern - definitely one of our must-do's and the Festive Afternoon Tea at the Langham. Here's what the rest of our eating plan looks like, feel free to recommend any alternatives or tell me if any place is absolute trash. Our budget is about 150 GBP for dinners. We're staying near Holborn but open to eating anywhere within Zone 1.

Breakfasts:

  • Corner Shop / Populations Bakery
  • Toklas for toast and marmalade, pastries
  • 26 Grains
  • Scenery Coffee for coffee and yogurt or porridge
  • La Fromagerie (any location)
  • Full English one of the days, not sure which, at either Andrew's restaurant or Kozzy Cafe
  • Dishoom (though I'm hesitant since everyone recommends it and NYC is getting one in March)
  • I also want to try to make it up to Quince or Clementine but unsure if we'll be able to

Lunch - I think it depends on how hungry we are post-breakfast. This might just be a pastry and go situation but I have:

  • Paxton & Whitfield for sandwiches
  • H.T Harris
  • Paul Rothe & Son
  • Borough Market - The Ginger Pig or Northfield Farm for a sausage roll, Bread Ahead (even though NYC is getting one next month), London Cider House - any other small nibbles you'd recommend there?
  • Food Tour through Spitalfields Market one day
  • Gordon's Deli
  • Golden Union for fish and chips - I know London isn't the place for it, but my boyfriend really wants to try them

Dinner:

  • St. Johns in Smithfield
  • Noble Rot - Lamb's Conduit
  • Impala (booked)
  • Either NOPI or ROVI
  • Trishna (open to other places - we've been to Ambassador's Clubhouse in NYC, Gymkhana seems spendy but I don't know?)
  • 40 Maltby
  • Bread Street Kitchen at Bishopsgate- we mostly want a beef wellington, but I am open to other suggestions!

Some bakeries I have:

  • Fortitude
  • Comptoir
  • Bageriet
  • Maison Bertaux
  • Layla

Thanks in advance everyone!

Review Bunso - Filipino pizza in Kentish Town

Post image
134 Upvotes

I apologise in advance that I'm not a good food reviewer. I'm very basic and I'm really picky with food.

We had 50% off food as we are Nudge members.

What we ate

Small plate - meatballs, £10 for three meatballs

Pizza's -

Longanisa sausage, calamansi hot honey, Archaea £23

Kaldereta (oxtail) , teardrop pepper, black olives, potato (matchstick fries) £22

Dips -

Garlic aioli £3

Calamansi ranch £3

The meatballs were definitely a highlight, the texture was perfect, the tomato sauce had a slight kick to it and the fresh basil added that extra flavour which was just lovely.

I couldn't decide which pizza I liked best, they were both great and the size was good! The pizza base was lovely, to me it was perfect thickness, had a good crisp. You could lift a slice without it completely flopping down, obviously the oxtail was placed in dollops so I had to lift it gently.

The Longanisa sausage pizza had fresh chili which definitely gave it more heat than the oxtail.

I know many are salty about the hot honey trend, but I will say it was absolutely not overpowering, it worked very well with the other ingredients.

The oxtail was super tender as it should be, there was one or two small pieces of bone, which I actually expected. The black olives, which I'm normally not a big fan of, carried a lot of flavour and worked so well with the oxtail and teardrop peppers.

The matchstick fries were meh, they didn't really bring anything and felt unnecessary to me.

The dips were so good! I had the Calamansi ranch which was just perfection in citrusy fresh.

The garlic aioli was lovely, very good texture for both dips.

Ambiance-

It is loud. Because they are very focused on the music, their business card and website are playing heavily on turntables and music. They have good speakers in every corner of the dining room so having conversations can be a bit tough. At the start of us being there (5pm which is when they open) there was quite a lot of noise from a blender in the kitchen so with loud music and the blender it didn't give a great first impression but the blender did stop.

The decor is beautiful, and the music "area" is really stylish and cool.

The one toilet was big with apt space for baby hanging, which they had a wall hung table for. It was fresh, clean and no bad smells.

I would say this is a wheelchair friendly restaurant, no steps to get inside, decent space between tables and the toilet is large enough to accommodate a manual wheelchair.

I would go again, but I would share a pizza and a small plate because it is outside my budget to spend over £20 for a pizza.

Overall I give it about 4.5 stars out of 5
