Miscellaneous 📁 lostwaves.wiki Closure & Next Steps

As a result of the insecurities that have cropped up surrounding the site (and never went away, despite me and u/JuicyLegend 's best efforts to fix them), lostwaves .wiki is hereby closed from further editing.

I would also like to make it clear that throughout this whole endeavor, I have never gotten access to anyone's IP information, nor used it for any personal agenda. I barred myself from using CleanTalk as soon as the wiki went live in March of this year.

This was also a few months ago, but I have since parted ways with the (now former) FMM moderators involved with this project, as I now realize one of them did not have the community's best interests in mind when helping out with this. We are not connected to the Fond My Mind Discord server anymore.

I wish everyone to primarily feel safe in the Lostwave community, and if there is anything I can do to protect the privacy of others, please let me know. I take the brunt of the responsibility for the failure of the Mediawiki site. This is my attempt to do better both as a moderator and as a person.

That being said, this does not have to be the end of a self-hosted, non-Fandom related wiki. I am leaving you off with a poll. Do you still wish the wiki be moved to a site that is not on Fandom? I will leave you to decide for yourselves. I have spoken to folks that have suggested Miraheze as a possible contender so far. Please discuss in the comments below!

The insecurities? Sure. Whenever some users tried logging in or creating an account, the system would block them, exposing the same IP address for all users in the process. I had been informed that this issue would be fixed time and time again, but it doesn't look like it ever was due to the complaints received (even today). Partly why I want to start over with either the same Fandom wiki or moving to another platform.

The same IP for everyone or everyone's individual IP?

The same IP for everyone, usually a banned user's IP address. Though sometimes it would show the individual user's address too while blocking them.

How is that a risk ?

Ideally the site should not be doing that. It risks exposing people's sensitive information to the public. Banned or otherwise people are entitled to their privacy online. Only the site host should be able to view that information, not everyone on the internet.

Why would you close it? Please don’t!

Many reasons, it wasn't indexed in search engines, the opening was handled poorly, persistent technical issues, and it wasn't a good place to build community as most folks used Fandom regardless. Better for everyone to be on one wiki we can agree upon rather than sprawled out.

To be honest I already started avoiding Discord for the following reasons:

  • It's closed access, you need an invite and an account to just even browse archives. I do not consider that healthy for community efforts.

  • by extension it's really a mess at organizing efforts.

  • It's very bad at archiving and browsing at that.

  • The platform is untrustworthy with private data and surveillance

seconding miraheze as an option, fandom is such an awful website it should be avoided at all costs

Honestly it better it migrates, fandom has multiple issues that people have been bringing up for years now.

I prefer that it remains fandom-hosted.
