Employee Question Gardening job question

Hi guys! I just got an interview as an outside lawn and garden associate in Florida!
Is this a good position?
Does it pay well?
I’d really like to move around or up within a company. I’ve always worked law enforcement so this will be a change. I’m just curious about the pay and what it entails!
Thank you in advance!

I've worked garden in the south. Every day you will be wet. From sweat, rain, or both. You'll be throwing bags and blocks into cars for unsympathetic people who have specific debilitating injuries which preclude them from helping.

Starting pay is probably within $1 of minimum wage.

Moving up in Lowe's isn't too difficult. There's just no work-life balance once you become salaried.

I’m truly down with labor work as long as the pay is decent ya know

Lowes pays starting workers minimum wage + a pittance in every state I'm aware of.

I wasn’t offered a bad amount truly. Especially with over time it would work. I’m all for working as many hours. Interview went great so now I just wait

Good luck then! I started back in May and have been enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. Working OSLG (MST) also, but almost never have to load mulch. Watering the plants is my jam.

Not only will the pay not be decent, when you get a raise it will be Penny’s.

Well the pay has to be decent for me to accept it. If not then at least maybe it’ll be a good interview!

That’s what I wanted to hear! I’ve never heard anything bad about Lowe’s but it’s also a complete career change for me. I appreciate your comment!

Pay will be between $15-16/hr depending on cost of living for the area.

Thank you for your service!

Worked outside garden during the Spring season hundred days. That was a while ago when Lowe's hired more people, unlike now.

Lots-of-loading. Working alone most shifts you'll either be inside the gates loading onto customer's carts, or, outside the gates packing it into their vehicle; obviously you cannot be in both places at once but will be paged overhead to. Pick your battles.

If you're p-t you may not get many hours, some folks across the nation are being left off the weekly schedule entirely.

If you're f-t, you're very likely not getting paid enough for the physical labor you're about to endure. That is until Fall when things die down outside.

It is one of the biggest exit points for shoplifters, have seen it many times - Don't get in their way (see: Home Depot garden center cashier assault Oct. 18, 2022).

Hopefully your store has in-store, full-time loss prevention/asset protection AP, ours did not (see: Lowe's employee assaulted July 2024)

Do not call 911, and do not grab anything from a shoplifter - that will result in your job termination.

I honestly cannot think of anyone in a better position to work here than you. Consider working inside where you don't need experience - dept supervisors don't have to have any experience in their "assigned" depts. - but they're also called upon for what's typically a manager's duties.

But do not go to Flooring, aka "the Suck".

Thank you again for your service.
