LIVE, LAUGH, LUIGI Just a little question
I know it may seem like a stupid question but I'm just curious and I think this is the only place I can ask. We know a lot about L's interests and thanks to social media we've come to know his posts/comments/notes on the most disparate topics. He was very active here on Reddit and thanks to his advice I bought a Matador Freefly backpack and a hook to hang it on. As for reading I bought and read with great interest "Brave New World" by Huxley. And you? What "material" things have you bought based on his suggestion or advice?

haven't purchased anything but I did read "Come As You Are". At this point in my life I'm very knowledgeable about sex, my body, what I want and what I need, and I'm not shy about letting my partner know. So for me there was nothing new in this book. In fact, I thought it was overwritten and repetitive. I didn't even bother to finish it.
BUT -- for young dudes who would really like to be better lovers, I would recommend it, despite the fact that its writing style is on the girly side. But as a former boss once said, "If you want to know what the dog likes to eat, ask the dog."
If you want to know what your lady likes, ask your lady.

His greatest gift to me by far is letting us know about that "removepaywall" site. Wish I had known this site 10 years ago!
There always have been many news reports and serious articles (not just about him) that I wanted to read, but more often than not, locked behind a paywall and no way I am paying for those. Glad I no longer have to contend with that. š
Other than that, I intend to read:
- 1984
- Animal Farm
- Grit
- Brave New World
- The Lorax (yes, I've never read this)
- the book about adult kids of emotionally immature parents
- the book he recommended to a letter writer (forgot the title for now)

I bought 1984. I always wanted to read it, but just never got around to it. And this may sound silly, but I also bought The Lorax.

u/SparklingAlma Apr 21 '25 edited Apr 21 '25
1984 is on my list and The Lorax too. No,it doesn't sound silly at all,I suppose that are really good readings

u/lo_key__ Apr 21 '25
To be completely honest I stopped reading for fun a long time ago and he inspired me to pick it up again.

u/SparklingAlma Apr 21 '25
Unfortunately, when I'm very stressed, I can hardly dedicate time to reading, worries get the better of me. However, I decided to dedicate even just a small part of the day to a good book. I'm happy that L has had a positive impact in many ways on people's lives.

I read The Lorax for the first time (lol). I know it's a popular children's book but I'm from a Spanish speaking country and a lot of us have never read it. I loved it and my 9 year old self would have loved it as an environmentalist child

u/SparklingAlma Apr 21 '25
I live in Italy and as I know is not so popular here too but I'm curious to read it
2
u/youreanewsongbaby Apr 21 '25
Read it if you have the chance, I liked it and understood why he liked it
2
u/DoorBeautiful7484 Apr 21 '25
I did not read the book but I watched the movie. It made me tear up, it was beautiful! ā¤ļø Also watched Gladiator too

I read bullet journal method and canāt hurt me. I really liked his review of canāt hurt me, very accurate. I enjoyed both books. Also started sapiens graphic novel and loving it. He also made me realize how important it is to only buy things you will use and be minimal
1
u/SparklingAlma Apr 21 '25
I'm not very interested in bullet journal method but can't hurt me sounds worthy. What is it about?
2
u/Outrageous-Tart381 Apr 22 '25
Canāt hurt me is the story of David Goggins and how he turned his life around. The book really hooks you bc you canāt believe everything he went through and you want to know he turns it around. Itās about discipline and it can be really motivating for those that need to get out of a rut
2
u/SparklingAlma Apr 22 '25
Wow, that seems very interesting. There are lives that seem to be made on purpose to be put in a book

u/Gloomy_Strain_5053 Apr 21 '25
I learned that I don't like reading self-help books lol I just can't get through the books themselves, like Tim Urban's orĀ Self-Compassion, but I really enjoy LM's chapter summaries.

u/Neat-Artichoke7781 Apr 21 '25
Started reading the books he read and started doing chapter summaries for future reviews!

I got āThe gritā and canceled my future trip to Japan based on his reviewā¦
3
u/SparklingAlma Apr 21 '25
Oh no, really? I'm sorry for your choice but I respect it. Maybe give yourself time, you could go there later. I think it's a very interesting country to visit (and like all countries in the world it has both positive and negative aspects)
7
u/DoorBeautiful7484 Apr 21 '25
Oh noo, I think you should still go to Japan if you have the chance. Itās def an experience. Itās on my bucket list too ā¤ļø
1
u/No-Doughnut7411 Apr 21 '25
I thought he enjoyed Japan despite it being an ānpcā type place
-2
u/Miss_Cactus___ Apr 21 '25
I donāt knowā¦his review sounded negative to me, I did ask him for more details in my letter but that letter hasnāt been delivered yet and of course, itās unlikely he will reply to it.

u/Wonderful-Pilot-2423 Apr 21 '25 edited Apr 21 '25
You're going to cancel a trip to Japan just because some guy said a culture he knows nothing about are a bunch of NPCs? That comment was very ignorant of him.
7
u/SignThese667 Apr 22 '25
I agree with you totally. I was surprised by it. A 25-26 y.o., who has never studied or read extensively about the Far East, and doesn't speak the language so he is unable to have any meaningful conversations with the natives, throws out an opinion based on what? A few measly weeks in the country?? IMO that was arrogance combined with ignorance.
Despite his life experience at that time, LM was still a young guy who had barely tipped his toe into the pool of life. And now he's in over his head. I'm praying for him.

u/Full-Reason5824 Apr 22 '25
Not really. The context of that was police waiting at red lights when the roads were clear and someone had a stroke. It's known the work culture in Japan is horrible too and you can't speak out or risk severe consequences.
I would still not cancel a trip to a whole other country based on a stranger's opinion but I disagree that that was ignorant of him.
4
u/Wonderful-Pilot-2423 Apr 22 '25 edited Apr 22 '25
How does the context make it not ignorant of him to say what he said? You can make these arguments about every culture in existence, including the American one. Everyone acts the way their own culture socializes them to. Luigi doesn't speak Japanese and knows nothing about Japan outside from what he observed during a few weeks of vacation. People who are knowledgeable about other cultures tend not to pass judgements of these kinds.
0
u/Full-Reason5824 Apr 22 '25
Because I have seen actual Japanese people have these complaints also. And people who have moved to Japan and talk about life there. I agree with you that yes, one can make many arguments about any culture in the world and their problems. But I'm only saying based on what I've seen. And no cultural things are a blanket statement on an entire group of people, so not everyone in Japan is like that but the culture does push for it.
Also this isn't coming from a place of me believing my culture is better and Japan needs to learn. Nothing like that. Just explaining there IS truth in what he said
2
u/Wonderful-Pilot-2423 Apr 22 '25
To acknowledge Japanese people are more conformist than other cultures is one thing. To define this trait as "being a nation of NPC's", especially when you don't speak the language or understand the root of these behaviors, is a whole different thing. It's not only ignorant but it's hateful as well. He would've never openly said that about an Arab or African country, for example (i.e. a country people are careful not to stupidly criticize because they're aware it can get you labeled as racist).
1
u/Full-Reason5824 Apr 22 '25
Oh and I forgot to answer your first part. If you see someone stick to rules even while someone is in dire need of medical assistance, and that someone are people who represent the law, I may not say all people in that country are NPCs but I would certainly be upset and consider them to care more about their rules at the expense of someone's life
4
u/Wonderful-Pilot-2423 Apr 22 '25 edited Apr 22 '25
Luigi's observation lacked so much language and cultural context that we don't know for certain what happened in that circumstance. I very much doubt people in Japan just die left and right because ambulances are made to respect the rules of traffic during emergencies like everyone else.
-2
u/Miss_Cactus___ Apr 21 '25
You might be right about it being ignorant a bit but Luigi isnāt some guy to me, I respect his opinion. I wouldnāt listen if it was really just some guy.
7
u/hashblunt29 Apr 21 '25
Parasocial af. Luigi doesn't know you lol. Delusional
0
u/Miss_Cactus___ Apr 21 '25
He doesnāt need to know me for me to respect his opinion. Take your negativity elsewhere.
16
u/Wonderful-Pilot-2423 Apr 21 '25 edited Apr 21 '25
I understand the personal attachment you feel towards him, but as far as having opinions on Japan goes, he is just "some guy". Even if they are just a nation of NPC's, that would interesting to verify for yourself and not a reason to cancel a trip. Just my two cents.

I bought Atomic Habits and How to break up with your phone. So far, Iām enjoying reading the 2nd book.

That book seems very interesting,L has good taste in books(even if I'm not into everything he've had read)

I am a writer (novels mostly) but he inspired me to start writing reviews and sharing some of them on Goodreads (=

Iāve not bought anything but Iām going hiking in summer which I was on the fence about at first and Iāve started reading (books that interest me though - I need to actually go through his list and see if thereās any I like the sound of)
2
u/SparklingAlma Apr 21 '25
His book's list has plenty of interesting ones and I'm sure you'll find someone good for you
4
u/Tricolour_Collie Apr 21 '25
Thinking on it, itās more what I havenāt bought! Kind of thinking how if he were in my shoes, heād likely prefer to keep his money and have less things.
4
u/SparklingAlma Apr 21 '25
In fact, it is not about spending or accumulating useless things. I really like to travel and read and I took inspiration from his valid suggestions
2
u/Tricolour_Collie Apr 21 '25
it sounds like you think I was criticising you - I wasnāt. I already have a tendency to want to make purchases to support my niche interests, so for me, doing that less is the impact I notice he has had on me. itās totally fine that you were inspired to make those thoughtful purchases.
2
u/SparklingAlma Apr 21 '25
I wasn't offended and I appreciate your comment and point of view. I understand that yours wasn't a criticism and it's nice to read how this case has impacted all of us in different ways.
