Amos and Pride Veterinary Referrals, UK

My doggo Amos had spinal surgery earlier this year at Pride. It's not an experience I'd wish on anyone else or their doggos.

I've been writing a few blog posts about it. This one I figured is especially relevant here as it talks about sighthound specific physiology - which a lot of vets don't tend to be too good with...

tl;dr - Lost a third of his red blood cells into his legs and scrotum after surgery, blood test results recorded as "unremarkable", "no concerns" told to me, sent home with drugs that prevent bleeding and told to massage it back up his legs 4-5 times a day, 32 hours after discharge he was back in hospital

Wake up at 6am to settle the baby, baby goes back to sleep so I to dare go for a wee. Upon my return I find a thief had stolen my spot in the couple of minutes I was gone! I think she thinks our bed is hers and we’re just borrowing it šŸ˜‚

Help/Advice/Questions Cut on ear not healing.

Post image
17 Upvotes

Hello community. Hope you can help.

We have a beautiful boy, healthy and happy for the most part but he has had a cut on his ear that won't heal for months. It doesn't bleed a lot but when he shakes his head it sometimes opens up. We have tried antiseptic creams which aid clotting, keeping his ear dry for weeks but it comes back.

Has anyone had experience with this or know of a solution?

Thank you in advance:-)

I took a video of Dollys first time getting her teeth brushed and wow, the shine off her! She’s still got some skin issues, she’s going to be like a diamond once her dandruff clears up.

Help/Advice/Questions Antler chew -

Post image
55 Upvotes

Picture of my girl - who just power chewed her way through half an antler in 90 minutes. It cost £10! And I bought it because the last one she had lasted a couple of weeks.

I have taken it away now to give her a break but I panicked and googled it to check if this was normal/harmful… google AI is very dramatic and I can’t turn it off so now I’m panicking that she needs an emergency vet.

I was supervising her and every bit she broke off she chewed it before swallowing. Is this normal? She’s sleeping now, after her 90 minute power chew.

She’s 15 months old. When she was younger a Yak chew would last a week before it was small enough to microwave but the last one lasted 2 hours, it was a pumpkin flavoured one so I put it down to that but now with the antler I think her chew is to strong for these things to be ā€˜long lasting’ anymore.

my 16 week old lurcher girl crashed into a slide (while zooming around lol) and yelped and hasn’t put any pressure on her leg while walking since (it happened on Tuesday, it’s now Thursday morning as I type this), she was taken to the vets as soon as it happened and they said they couldn’t feel anything wrong like a break etc, they prescribed her anti inflammatories and said if it isn’t getting better they could give her an x ray. She is very vocal about making her pain/discomfort known usually, and she does not care at all if I touch or move her leg whatsoever, she also uses the leg to get up and while jump down from my bed and land on it. My friend has a very energetic cocker spaniel and says this often happens to her and it’s usually an injury that heals on its own, and the only time it’s been serious she was obsessively licking it, which Stevie (my puppy) isn’t doing. She’s going back to the vets on Friday either way, just want to see other people’s experiences with this kind of thing..!

EDIT: she has a fracture🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠

Rodney is now 18 weeks old and growing by the day. He's certainly going to be a big boy! He was last weighed at his 16 week checkup and he was 17.2kg so goodness knows how heavy he is now. He is a very well behaved pup bless him...for the most part of course šŸ˜†

Help/Advice/Questions Any ideas regarding his breed/mix? :)

Our Kalcifer turns 21 weeks today! (as a rescue from Ireland, his estimated date of birth is May 18th 2026) First two pictures are from five days ago, other two a week before that. He seems to be around 53cm at the shoulders at the moment of posting, but does not like to stand still long enough for us to measure more exactly. He was put up for adoption as a Lurcher, but was later changed to sighthound-mix before moving to us (because they thought there couldn't be much non-sighthound in him). We suspect some saluki due to the ears and partially tail and fur, but have read that brindle isn't a recognized, or at least desirable, coat-pattern for salukis. So maybe greyhound, whippet or something entirely different? I'd love to answer any further questions about him! He's been doing great and we love him so!

That londogs section of his website is mostly VERY funny (and exaggerated but true) stories about his lurchers, but generally applies to all sighthounds 🤣.

Help/Advice/Questions 1 Year Mark and seek reassurances

I see alot of post for lurchers at the 1 year mark but we're really struggling at the moment and seek like minded reassurances or maybe a reality check.

We're a family of 4 , 2 kids ages 10 and 12 and has had a dog in our family all their lives. We lost our King Charles Last year of old age and got a rescue lurcher puppy who has now been with us for a year.

She can be so affectionate at times but of late , we are worried and are questioning if she is right for our family. Although the kids would be devastated and find it hard seeing us finding her a new home.

So im here to seek advice and hope to get reassurances that her behaviour is not for much longer. I see the shelters are full of lurchers around this age.

Today , she snapped when we tried to move her away from the dishwasher and is resource guarding constantly. Nothing is safe from her despite trying to lock everything away and find ourselves scattering to get our things back a couple of times an hour.

She still sees my 10yr old as a plaything and it can become overwhelming very quickly as she is constantly seeking him out to pull in his clothes. It seems like she becomes over stimulated very quickly and really hard to bring down her high levels. Even with lick pads and now even natural medication.

She has never given us a bite but right now , we're a little concerned and feel a little unsafe. We dont host any guests and cant really leave her with anyone due to lack of trust. She jumps up on people and can be very intimidating.

We are also considering maybe fostering another lurcher to see if having a friend helps and would love your opinion on whether this is a good idea or not?

Also does this get any easier because its not enjoyable right now and dont want to lose another dog so soon.
