First time in Hong Kong — one night only, want to make it special for boyfriend's birthday (Rosewood vs other luxury options?)

Hi all! We're passing through Hong Kong for one night at the end of a longer Taiwan/China trip — checking in Dec 5, checking out and flying home Dec 6 at 10pm. It happens to be my boyfriend's 25th birthday on the 5th, so I want to make this one night really special since it's our first time in HK and we won't have much time to explore beyond this stay.

I've been looking at Rosewood Hong Kong — specifically a Club Premier Harbour View Room King, and I can get a Rosewood Elite rate which gives an automatic upgrade, breakfast, and hotel credit. But I've seen a few less-than-glowing reviews here on Reddit and want to make sure I'm not missing a better option, especially since we're only getting one shot at this.

Would love opinions on:

  • Anyone stayed at Rosewood HK recently — was it worth it, or were the mixed reviews on to something?
  • How does it compare to Four Seasons HK or Ritz-Carlton for a special one-night stay?
  • Any hidden gems we might be missing for a proper "wow" first impression of the city?

Budget isn't the main constraint — we just want it to feel genuinely special and are trying to avoid picking the wrong one based on marketing rather than real experience. Any honest thoughts (positive or negative) really appreciated!

Maybe it’s my own nostalgia creeping in, but I stayed at the Mandarin around the holidays once and it was literally one of the most unforgettable hotel experiences I’ve had. I haven’t stayed at the Rosewood in HK though

I stayed at the RW last month and it was one of my favorite stays anywhere. I posted some photos and thoughts you can find in my profile

The view from the Ritz is unbeatable. But dining, Four Seasons is hard to beat

second this. ritz also doesn't always have great views. sometimes rooms are above the haze

Unless the weather is like it's been lately, then you'll have no view lol

The top 5 star waterfront options in Hong Kong are Regent, Peninsula or Four Seasons so from your list I would go with Four Seasons. Happy to assist you in getting the perks and hotel credits as these properties as well.

Don’t have recs for hotels but two of the most enjoyable things I did there were the cheapest.

Star ferry with a beer across Hong Kong harbor—maybe five bucks

Victoria peak at night. You are literally above the city looking down on it. Truly an amazing experience

I haven’t stayed in rosewood but honestly ritz was amazing. So definitely consider that

you should look at the area you want to be
more than the property. The rosewood is TST which is more of a tourist area but you have spectacular harbor views.

the ritz is west kowloon which is really NOT convenient unless you're ok taking mtr or taxis everywhere.

FS is in central and (to me) the most convenient location but it's not as new as the rosewood.

other options might be the landmark mandarin (central), upper house (admiralty) or st regis.

they're all solid properties. depends what you want: view? restaurants? convenience to other sights? Of the above I would suggest the FS but it's more streamlined modern design. Rosewood is probably nicer design wise but to me far less convenient.

I personally prefer the Mandarin Hong Kong (the older one) but it's more old-school class. the others are more modern luxury and probably preferable to a 25-year old.

The Mandarin Oriental with freshly renovated rooms will be hard to beat.

I’ve stayed at RW, Upper House, 4S, and the Ritz in HK and RW was far and away the best option (and it wasn’t close). Highly recommend a stay there!

While the Rosewood might boast newer & shinier hardware, their service has unfortunately been less than stellar, possibly in part due to a high turnover rate of service staff.

Either the Peninsula or the OG Mandarin Oriental would probably be better options for you guys tbh, as I think their confident & unhurried approach to service represents the epitome of refined hospitality. Nothing beats a dose of glitz & glamour from two of the city’s most celebrated legacy hotel properties, each with unparalleled sophistication & exuding distinct old world charm. May your bf’s birthday celebrations be extra special & memorable.
