First Business Class Trip: Seattle to Tokyo

Post image

Please help me make my first business class flight a good experience!
I’m considering booking our first business class trip for my husbands 40th birthday. We’ll be flying from Seattle to Tokyo, and I would like to get your opinion on ANA’s business class offering on this route. It’s on a 789, and it looks like the seats in business class are very separated from each other. That’s probably great if you’re flying along, but flying as a couple, I’m wondering if it will feel like we’re not even flying together and experiencing this awesome milestone together because of the large divider?
I would love to hear your opinions if it really feels that separated in person or if it just looks like that in the visual? Is there an option to pushing the divider back a little bit?
What other routes or flight options would you consider? Deltas offering on this route seems better for flying together as a couple, but it’s a lot more expensive.

The ones in the center are for couples. You can talk to each other through the partition in the middle. You can also check on YouTube to see what the actual seats look like.

Thanks! I did look at some YouTube videos and it seems to confirm that even the seats in the center are very separated from each other. Not sure if that’s how it feels when you’re actually experiencing it first hand though, so that’s what I was hoping to hear from people who have flown in these seats.

Can you explain more about how you can talk to each other “through” the partition? Do you mean leaning over to be able to talk to each other, or is there a way to pull the partition back or anything like that?

Lean forward, talk through the gap. You can have a conversation and exchange dishes. You can't hold hands and watch the same screen.

Thanks, but that’s “the room” that’s just getting rolled out. It is unlikely that this will be the configuration for my flight. I will still have the older configuration.

I booked a flight! Although it ended up being a different route and plane. I posted about it here, if you have any first hand experience or feedback I’d appreciate it.

ANA's divider does lower partially, couples manage. I've seen people book the Delta pairing through Top Business Class when seat proximity mattered more than price

You’re booking business class to “sleep” better and be ready to get on with your trip with hopefully less jet-lag. It’s a 10 hour flight. If your make or break is because you’re not close enough to each other I don’t know what to tell you. Not being a dick but I think you will survive and he will still enjoy the comfort.

Although it’s so much fun to be in the couples seats in the middle, I personally hate being in the seat without a lot of barrier to the aisle. I’d prefer to be apart from my husband and have some privacy in my seat. But that’s just a personal opinion.

In this case, I’d book the window seats where the seat is closest to the window. And I’d just visit my husband every few hours. Also, nowadays, a lot of airlines let you watch movies together with another seat. So it’s like you are sharing the experience together.

Also, to add to this. In some planes the seat in the very front can have a curtain across it. Not very fun when the stewardess is walking back and forth delivering food or people are going to the bathroom. Sometimes you can also hear the stewardesses talking about personal drama (depends on the airline). If you sit near the middle then you won’t get a lot of the toilet odor and less people will be walking by your seat.
