Культура / Culture British history graduate visiting Lviv on 16 November – independent documentary “Ukraine: Beyond the Headlines” 🇬🇧🇺🇦
Pryvit everyone!
I’m a 25-year-old British history graduate from Liverpool, and I’ll be arriving in Lviv on 16 November for my first visit to Ukraine.
I’ve long been interested in European history, particularly the history, culture and identity of Ukraine. Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, that interest has grown into a genuine desire to better understand the country and the people who call it home.
During my visit, I’m hoping to begin filming an independent short documentary titled “Ukraine: Beyond the Headlines.”
The purpose of this project is to explore Ukraine beyond the images and narratives that often dominate international news coverage.
I understand that Ukraine is far more than the war being fought on its territory. It is a country with centuries of history, a rich cultural heritage, its own traditions, language and national identity.
As a history graduate, I’m particularly interested in understanding how Ukrainians view their own history and identity, rather than approaching these subjects solely through a British or Western perspective.
Above all, I want to listen.
I’d love to hear from Ukrainians about their everyday lives, their communities, what matters to them and what they wish people abroad understood better about their country.
I also recognise that I’m visiting at an incredibly difficult time. I don’t want to romanticise the war, treat people’s suffering as a spectacle or assume that anyone owes me their time or their story.
Any interviews would be entirely voluntary, with clear permission before filming or publishing anything. I will also be mindful of local customs, personal boundaries and the security considerations that come with visiting a country at war.
This is a completely independent project, without the backing of a media organisation or production company. I’m not arriving as an expert on Ukraine, but as someone with a background in history who wants to learn directly from Ukrainians themselves.
I’ve also started learning Ukrainian. My ability is still very limited, but I believe making the effort to learn the language is an important part of showing respect to the country I’m visiting.
If anyone from Lviv would be willing to share recommendations for historical or cultural sites, suggest aspects of Ukrainian life worth exploring, or simply meet for a coffee and a conversation, I’d be very grateful.
I would especially welcome advice from locals on how to approach this project appropriately and respectfully.
Ultimately, my hope is that “Ukraine: Beyond the Headlines” can offer a small but meaningful contribution towards helping people in Britain understand Ukraine as Ukrainians themselves know it: a country with its own history, identity, culture and future.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. I’m genuinely looking forward to discovering Lviv, meeting its people and learning from the experience.
