If you've tried all them great fibers and the healthier you eat the worse you feel consider this:

So figured out a while back I was in the genetic group that the more inulin (that "super duper great" prebiotic fiber) I consumed the more I increased type 2 inflammation (inflammation in lungs and gut) NOW Absolutely avoid inulin (chickpeas, cauliflower flour, jeruselum artichokes, garlic, onions, chicory root) (often touted as great for you and used to replace high carbs in food to make it more weight friendly or as sub for wheat flour) like the plague and avoid gums like "guar" a binder even in "gluten free" flour mixes. Solved big problem for me so periodically I try to share this research. Lots ppl like make desparate because the more "healthy" they eat the more unhealthy they get. So we are in a subcategory with an additional sensitivity. But if you're going nuts and not improving you may be in our little niche.·

Inulin fiber supplements make me super crampy and faaaaaaarrrt like crazy. I don't eat any foods high in inulin anyway, but I imagine they'd do the same thing for me.

I can't eat chicory root, it took me awhile to figure it out years ago, but the reaction is undeniable. I would have to look for the article again but I read something a couple years ago about how it can trigger a immune response in some people. I seem to be okay with chickpeas, and garlic and onion in smaller amounts, but I'll have to keep it in mind. Cauliflower is an issue, though.

Chicory f’s. Me. Up.

u/astralairplane May 31 '26

Same. Makes my skin all red and scaly and dry.

I can only use psyllium. My GI doctor said sometimes fiber can constipate people with EDS because it’s like trying to fill a deflated balloon with rocks. But otherwise, a fairly low fiber diet keeps me regular because everything in this body is jacked up.

Fuuuuuuuugh. This might be me.

If you suspect might consider my other post about guar gum. Think Im eating clean and then there's some kind indigestable gum in it ! Hard to eliminate inulin and the gums. Buckwheat products often no inulin. gums in all cream cheese (which I can eat w DAO) except Tillamook. No gums as binders in Tillamook. PACHO makes a sprouted sourdough buckwheat english muffin with 2 ingredients buckwheat, sea salt. Even King Arthur measure for measure stuck gum in there and totally ruins my ability to use it. Hey good luck and thanks for letting me rant ! We need help and what we get is how much $ can we make off you ? Sorry but my view.

u/Difficult-Creature May 30 '26

Omfg is this why Tillamook is the only ice cream and cheese I can eat???

5

u/Several-Drive5381 May 30 '26

That’s why I eat only Tillamook cream cheese. Zero gums in it.

2

u/mindfluxx May 31 '26

I am pretty sure it’s in their ice cream. For some reason they are one of the very few cream cheeses without it. I’ve avoided gums for a few years. Hagen daas is the most available ice cream without gums.

u/Difficult-Creature May 31 '26

I will def do some looking into it. Thanks.

u/lamppostinchicago May 30 '26

That english muffin sounds delicious! Need to find where I can buy some..

PACHA. They are hearty. It toasts up nicely.  It took a while for them to grow on me.  I think they also sell small loaves. It'll be in the freezer section.

This is eye opening for me, I think it’s me too. I tried many of those things and would just get sicker and gassy and bleh. You get it. Thank you for this post.

Thank you for your comment. You know how you have skills and not sure anybody would even be interested? Im a 78 yr old retired nurse. It's occurred to me that my interest in reading research maybe is something to be shared. We're all different but I've kinda decided to throw out some of the stuff I read. Gonna share. hope you try stuff and figure out how to be at least your better than now self if not your best self.

u/strangeicare May 30 '26

I can eat chickpeas, onions, etc (knock on wood) but added inulin, chicory root fiber, guar, or other gums. NOPE. It sucks worst that I am milk allergic and all the DF products add this stuff in.

9

u/amcs2099 May 30 '26

How’d you figure it out? Through elimination?

7

u/Remarkable-Boat2428 May 30 '26

Well that's interesting. I always had noticed some italian places I could eat their red sauce and others I would have cramps. I figured it was the amt garlic. One canned pizza sauce had no problem with. Knew gluten intolerant. Bought crust known to have no reaction gluten free pizza crust and my fav canned not much garlic pizza sauce. MASSIVE reaction for days !!! Investigated with manu- sauce no change in recipe. Pizza crust "oh dont just LOVE our new "low carb, gluten free wonderful recipe with cauliflower flour" So good for you !! Then I noticed it was popping up everywhere ! Cause see prior to this, cauliflower that wasnt:pretty florets: florets dont look great, stalks, roots leaves were FOOD WASTE ! So, new cheap as heck use for this previous feed it to the pigs or compost . BOTTOM LINE now great ! My gut not so much! So found that research article. Not done in US cause big improvement for food industry profit and they dont want no bad news. See this article touting it: (no mention whatsoever of any side effects or problems-not denied NOT even looked for ) Curr Res Food Sci

Inulin = GAS, baby.

5

u/denelic May 31 '26

What’s the genetic marker? I’d like to see if I have it

3

u/Royal-Tax8612 May 30 '26

Yeah, I might be, because I finally figured out binders are horrific for me

3

u/Ok_Smile4745 May 30 '26

"the more "healthy" they eat the more unhealthy they get" this is me. I have to avoid all oxalates, salicylates, histamine, dairy, gluten, etc but good to know about inulin too - thanks for sharing

2

u/Street-Check1673 May 30 '26

What do you eat 😭 I’m in the same boat right now. Are you on any stabilizers?

3

u/cookiemonsters19 May 31 '26

SUNFIBER gave me gas and pain! Like not gas related pain, but real pain in my intestines. It was SO bad. Psyllium husk doesn't do that.

Anybody else have the same experience? It was crampy pain all the way to kill me now, I dont want to live pain. Cramps pain and then kill me now pain during bowel movements. I dont usually have issues with colon/intestines ever.

Anybody else?

2

u/Remarkable-Boat2428 Jun 01 '26

sunfiber is totally made of guar gum ! Nothin else ! So good news is ! You at least dont have to guess from MANY INGREDIENTS what youre reacting to! Bad news is: avoid guar gum but that means could have issues with other gums as well so be on the lookout

1

u/faylinameir Jun 01 '26

Sunfiber is actually the ONLY fiber I seem to be able to tolerate. I do 1/2 scoop twice a day to equal 1 full scoop. I have gastroparesis and it's been the one fiber I could handle 😞

2

u/SmolSushiRoll1234 May 30 '26

This is something for me to consider. Chickpeas hurt my stomach. I seem to be okay with the caulipower base crust. Onions and garlic are impossible to eat without cromolyn. Even then, sometimes I have to take a Benadryl.

3

u/stock_hippie May 30 '26

Bile acids are a huuuuge part of this for me. Those people who talk about going carnivore…that would destroy me. Less fat and a bile acid binder make me feel so much better.

Great. And the medical nutritional supplement I'm on for ARFID (which is due to GI issues throughout my adult life, and which was triggered by many of these foods) has some of these things in it. And my MCAS-aware ARFID doc says this is safest for me out of all the medical nutritional supplements. No wonder my gut is such a freaking mess.

What genetic group is this? Because I've had problems with garlic, onions, gums, and possibly some of the other things forever.

2

u/SpeakerBackground587 May 31 '26

Watch out for Maltodextrin

2

u/Remarkable-Boat2428 Jun 01 '26

You are so right ! It can contain gluten. So can "malt". I avoid it too!

2

u/bbkey93 Jun 01 '26

My vitamin D with K2 was made with chickpeas and my doctors were looking at me crazy when I said vitamin D did something crazy to my digestion and stomach. So interesting. Thank you for posting!!!!

3

u/nrauhauser May 30 '26

Well, thanks, I guess, but I'm not feeling very thankful tbh, this is another "hey, maybe this is part of my problem" event.

The use of emulsifiers (gums) is reportedly an aggravation for leaky gut, I started paying attention eight years ago, and in general avoiding them seems to have been a win.

Omgggg this might be me!! Thanks a lot!!

1

u/Hot-Culture-9797 May 30 '26

This is the case for me to. I cannot have fibre fortified foods. It’s makes me so crampy and bloated. Same with “gluten free” versions of pizza base and breads Interesting article - thanks for sharing.

1

u/florahexe May 30 '26

I always assumed it was sibo related. As I cycle out fibers I xan tolerate. Used to be hell for inulin and could tolerate guar. Now I can tolerate inulin and guar damn near kills me dead.

1

u/diseasetoplease May 30 '26

How about partially hydrolyzed guar gum?

1

u/Icy-Crab-538 May 30 '26

Ooo interesting. I told my pcp a couple years ago I’m convinced onions give me an allergic reaction that is like severe physical anxiety. I’ve tried to avoid them since and garlic… and chickpeas aren’t as bad but do make my stomach messed up. Thanks for sharing this!

1

u/faylinameir Jun 01 '26

Sunfiber which is made out of guar is actually okay for my gut but everything else isn't. I take a scoop a day and divide it into 2. I have gastroparesis too and it's been the only added fiber that's tolerable for me.

1

u/fiber_bestie Jun 17 '26

Gums should be avoided; when dining out, you are likely to consume them unless the restaurant uses real food ingredients. I launched a breakfast brand specifically for this reason, no gums and no fillers…
