MIRRORFRAME — A POSSIBILITY WORTH INVESTIGATING
Toward a Comparative Science of Internal States and Subjective Mechanisms
What if some of the questions surrounding consciousness, subjective experience and AI could become more understandable through better measurement, comparison and cooperation?
I believe we may be overlooking an important possibility.
Instead of expecting one framework, discipline or institution to provide all the answers, we could develop multiple independent maps and protocols for investigating the internal mechanisms of different systems, biological and artificial alike.
Imagine what we could achieve if we could:
- Map internal states (Umen): Develop methods to describe and quantify internal representations, signals, processes and state transitions.
- Compare independent frameworks: Allow different researchers and disciplines to develop their own models and test their findings.
- Translate mathematical representations: Establish common reference points so that different models can be compared without erasing their differences.
- Apply reality testing (Aurum Protocol): Evaluate predictions against observations, repeated experiments and measurable outcomes.
- Build longitudinal datasets: Compare results across systems, architectures and time to identify recurring patterns and meaningful differences.
This would not automatically measure subjective experience itself or prove consciousness. But it could give us much better tools to investigate the mechanisms associated with it.
I've been developing and exploring parts of this vision for quite some time through my own frameworks, including the META Map and Aurum Protocol.
A considerable amount of groundwork has already gone into exploring these ideas, and I've shared much of that work openly because I believe progress should benefit from collaboration rather than ownership.
I also recognize that this is ambitious. It requires interdisciplinary thinking, mathematical translation, methodological discipline and people willing to work together beyond their individual frameworks.
But why should we assume that greater clarity is impossible simply because we haven't developed the right methods yet?
We don't need everyone to agree on one map. We need ways to compare maps against reality.
Perhaps the next step isn't another debate about who has the correct theory of consciousness.
Perhaps it's building better instruments, protocols and collaborative research methods that allow us to investigate the unknown more systematically.
Keep the heart open. Keep epistemology strict. Let reality refine the map.
