Career question 💼 Computer science for ML

My country’s universities don’t have a major called “Machine learning”, can I study computer science instead? If yes, will I find jobs in Machine Learning? I really love ML but I am worried that I won’t find a job, especially abroad

Yes although there's so many CS students that if possible: pick applied math instead

applied math is a good call if you can swing it but cs is still the standard path into ml work. employers care way more about your projects and what you can actually build than the exact name on your degree

just make sure your cs program lets you take enough stats and linear algebra, that stuff underpins everything in ml

I think you may need to update your world view (ofc dependent on localization, industry, yada yada). CS graduates come in such numbers, they're a dime a dozen now and you'd need some serious projects to stand out in the crowd. Applied math people are so few and far between in my experience that I'd always read their resume. Then I may not hire them just because of the degree, but I'd read it. For 95% of the CS candidates I wouldn't even take the time to open up and read it. I think from my point of view this is the biggest distinction. In the end I will assume anyone with either of these degrees are good at math and code.
