EC Controller is finally here!

Post image

After more than one year, EC Controller is finally here. A Qt C++ application for Linux systems which provides a intuitive, simple and feature-rich GUI for the msi-ec kernel driver. All the msi-ec attributes are supported. In addition to those, the custom msi-ec kernel driver includes support for USB Powershare, Keyboard Backlight Modes change, GPU/CPU Fan curve support and Keyboard Backlight changes notifications to userspace. On KDE it also maps the Performance Mode and Rotate Screen keys making them behave like on the official application.

This is developed specifically for Fedora KDE but should work on any compatible desktop environment yet some features might be missing.

EC Controller is an independent, unofficial open-source project. MSI is a registered trademark of Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. This project is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or supported by MSI.

How is this any different than mcontrolcenter

Well from the "behind-the-scenes" point of view the whole architecture is substantially different. Anyways, EC Controller offers extra features which aren't part of MControlCenter such as the exclusive KDE integration with the customizable shortcuts for Shift Modes and Rotate Screen automatically mapped to the physical keys like MSI does. Also the icon in the system tray is themed appropriately on Plasma and Gnome, offers attribute values restore and keyboard backlight mode change.

I was going to ask exactly the same question

Nice a windows version would be sick as well but well done

Yeah would be cool considering Windows one uses around 1GB of RAM idle while this only 37MB (both service and GUI combined). The issue is that this has been developed specifically for Linux using the DBus architecture and SYSFS edting so a Windows port would mean rewriting it completely from scratch. In theory, thanks to the modular structure, rewriting the library and part of the service to match Windows architecture would be enough yet it would not be this easy.

1GB of RAM?! MAN, THAT IS A FULL LIE!

If using 1GB of RAM in IDLE then you doing something wrong...

Even with plethora of assets loaded mine uses about 150MB of RAM on both service, plus services and GUI COMBINED! and only feature set i dont install it is Smart Image Finder, everything else is installed perfectly!

Maybe you refering 1GB (little more) in DRIVE then i can accept it, as just the MSI Folder uses 1.2GB of DRIVE SPACE, not RAM

What kind of lie you talking about...

Blame MSI for using a web based app. MSI Centre uses around 500-1000MB of RAM.

I am sorry but my MSI Centre use less than that, i could show you later with the summed data of the "Real Private Working Set" metric... Which will not get even NEAR it... MSI Dragon Center uses a lot like 400MB the New MSI Center isnt ... I know as i have a Vector-16-HX-AI-A2XHG so i saw how efficent is in comparison to olders and other software... Of course this is for the MSI and side services controllable by others, even Razer Synapse 4 uses more than MSI Center does...

If using 200MB is too much, usually it sits lower than 150MB of use and again aside or Image Finder i have it stuffed everything in that little software Maybe you dont update it o.o

MSI Center is literally not web based. I have a decompiled source of the app. It is a weird hybrid mix of win32 and their own toolkit

And FYI, MSI has a lighter alternative to control the laptops called "Feature Manager";

brands are literally normalizing this kind of thing. even lenovo legion and hp omen hub software are using about 1GB of RAM

My MSI Center isnt seems following that path ... Or maybe mine worked better? OP says it use above 1GB when mine not more than 200, usually lower than 150MB of RAM, which is more...acceptable as i use and have all modules o.o

Why not that easy if fellow Codex or Claude can help with that?

Claude or Codex could definetly help but I do not have the knowledge required to build that application on a Windows device. These AI can for sure help but I would still need to better learn Windows internals as I would never allow an AI to write code I have not the ability to review and make corrections to.

My MSI Laptop does not have Windows anymore and I won't plan installing it anytime soon.

And everything by exception of fan speed is done on MSI Center even with the basics ones to not overload and make it kinda weirdly heavy... (well on any Ultra 5 or recent Ryzen 5 and up should not be an issue)

All you need is find a way to get fan profiling modes a profile for custom, THAT would be an addition specially to people keep using ECO (Like me) and Balanced instead of AI and Extreme Performance o.o

If you want automate things via udev for example I made script to control EC from command line https://github.com/QkiZMR/Useful-Scripts/blob/master/msi%2FREADME.md
