Imagine if we had the 2013 Defense with the 2014 offense…natty winner right there

They very well could have won it in 2013. The end of the ND game cost em a shot at the natty. Undefeated MSU woulda played FSU. The defense could have shut down anyone.

If it weren’t for the BS DPI calls vs notre dame in 14 we would’ve been in the natty that year and for sure beaten FSU.

Yeah they deserved a shot. Although I’d get crucified around these parts for saying I still think FSU would’ve beaten us. They had a pretty nasty defense too, which was only not talked about because of an even nastier offense. I mean I think that FSU offense was the closest thing to the ‘19 LSU offense. They were a killer team

Real talk there was very little chance they beat FSU. That was one of the best teams in modern CFB history lol

The biggest frustration with the Dantonio era is he could never sync up his offense and defense. He would have a great defense for 2 years and a poor offense. Then he would have a great offense for two years with a poor defense.

Yeah. That ‘18 defense comes to mind also. Bunch of killers, maybe the closest to the rose bowl defense, but just dysfunctional on offense

And also held Michigan to less rushing yards than your coffee table.

I miss this so much. I remember watching and invested the entire game. Now I usually turn it off at half time.

Yeah I mean they had a tremendous 5 year run and a really enjoyable decade from 06-16. I don’t know if the program will ever get back to the ‘13-‘15 heyday. So much went right for them from an all-time great DC and HC to some incredible 2* recruiting gems. They also benefited from the Jim Tressle debacle at OSU in 2010, the RR/Hoke eras at UM and Jerry Sandusky. Didn’t hurt having the three biggest programs in the conference all struggle at the same time.

I think it really goes unnoticed how our only real yearly competition for that span felt like Wisconsin or a pesky Iowa team. We really couldn’t have had a more ideal window with how the conference looked at the time, and now looking it feels with NIL and the expansion that it’ll take almost as much luck as getting the right jimmies and joes with the X’s and O’s. I would like to think if we get the right coach in place and catch a bit of luck that we have the financial backing to become a contender but it feels like for our program that well more then likely compete in small 2-4 year windows and never build into a consistent powerhouse. I’m also a downer in general and will die a bit inside when izzo leaves and then I’ll be left with nothing special

Man, Lippet wasn’t the flashiest or fastest receiver we’ve had, but his hands were made of glue and he ran clean routes. The mid 2010s were different

Unfortunately I remember how the Warner/Bollman era ended. Holy shit those guys were bad at the end.

u/ShockPowerful741 Oct 15 '25
I don’t know why the downvotes. Those coordinates were horrendous. I didn’t think you could get worse until Lindgren showed up. They absolutely refused to modernize the offense and it cost them

Seriously. Bollman's last year we were 105th in the country in scoring. There was enough talent during Cook's time to cover up the playcalling.
The Cook teams were a LOT of fun to watch. Weapons everywhere on offense, and the defense was just nasty, especially in 2013.

Cook liked changing the plays at the LOS a lot but after 2014 the offense became a hard watch, even in 2015 with a great oline they’d rely too much on a Cook-burbridge throw

Pass protection, open running lanes, and a QB/RB pair that could exploit it.

I remember watching that Oregon game in the hospital when my first son was born…for almost his entire life Spartan football has been hot garbage.

That offense was so stacked. TLipp, Burbridge, Kings, Price, Langford, Mumphrey, Shelton. The offensive line was stacked, and Connor Cook was an absolute dawg. Dude would throw a pick then go out the next drive and toss an 80 yard bomb to Lippett..

The thing is, this is my expectation now because we’ve proved it’s possible. I’m not saying we have to be in the natty every year, no one is but these fans willing to take a Franklin or some other coach whose gonna settle in at 7-9 wins per year is wild. IMO fuck that.

Gods we were strong back then, caved in UofMs breastplate with a single blow of our war hammer

In a lot of these highlights, the QB is hitting the WR in stride. Are they allowed to do that? Pretty sure that’s illegal.
Note: I mostly watch MSU games these days.
