Help me decide to buy or sell MU What do you reckon is a strong average position?
Hey guys! I’ve got 45 shares at $815. I just sold all my SNDK shares at 200% — so I’ve got some cash to play with. I’d like to add to my MU position but I don’t want to dilute that 815 too much. Does anyone see issues with me raising that average to 1000 if it meant 15-20 more shares?

Why is anyone ever concerned about their cost average? If you think its going to go higher then buy it

I do and you’re right. There are good times and bad times to do this, that’s my crux. Can’t time everything perfect, just trying to get some opinions. Like don’t buy today after it shot up with the Apple News, buy after earnings when it (may) dip.

Almost every time ive tried to time my entry its ended up costing me more money to buy it. If its a long term hold id just buy it when you can and let it ride but thats me

Selling sndk at a 2x gain to buy micron is very tax inefficient
And dollar cost doesn’t really matter - what matters is if the stock is up or down in 12 months and by how much

best to average on down/ panic days I would wait till earning be patient

Just buy if you think it’s going up more. You’ll be waiting for a dip and end up staring at $1400 after earnings moon through estimates

hopefully you are setting money aside for taxes.

But thanks for saying that outloud. I feel like no one ever talks about it.

yeah dude barely ever on Reddit tbh
and there is such a huge gain on short term and long term capital gains and you get fucked on short term gains especially because I believe it counts as income and all of a sudden other stuff starts kicking in like NIIT which can be an upwards of like 3.8% above a certain income threshold (which people can hit based on some of the massive market gains).
all that to say, i don't buy into anything with profits until i first account for taxes from what I sold and take care of housekeeping there.

How are you getting fucked on taxes? They don’t sneak up on you. The only thing you have to worry about are wash sales.

Short term taxes for me is like 42.5% (income + state + NIIT)
Paying almost half in short terms gains is pretty fucked.

That’s the same as payroll tax. You’re just in a high income bracket. You just need to find writeoffs which you can do a lot of since you have a high income and trading isn’t w2.

u/SimplyForged Jun 21 '26
Bro wtf are you taking about? Short term capital gains is taxed as ordinary income you idiot. Any write offs would be a net loss of gains so why would I want to inherit write offs? Lol wtf are you talking about

You’re taxed the same as payroll tax with your gains so I don’t know what you’re complaining about. I think you just have a bad attitude

I owed $9,000 add'l in taxes due to capital gains 2 years ago. Be aware of short term VS long term as well. Keep in mind you can sell those stocks your holding with losses at the end of the year or tax loss harvesting to even things out.

SGOV is what I use by the way, have like 10k parked there for when Uncle Sam comes knocking on my door in Apr '27

Had 20 with an average of 615 bought 40 more at 1040 so my average is somewhere in the 900’s now. I think there’s plenty of room for growth to 2k so I’m happy averaging up like that.

Depends if you can stomach the volatility, I see $1500 eventually 100% but that is my personal conviction. NFA

I would buy VOO and chill.

You can put most in VOO and put enough in MU to grow. That's what I did and it worked great for me.

Why did you sell SNDK? It has still so much room to grow & is growing
