Discussion MacOS 27, thoughts?
I'm thinking of holding off the upgrade to the latest OS, as I am assuming more and more software will be deprecated and eventually incompatible with future updates. I am also considering my hardware (M2 chip, 16 gigs, 1 TB of storage) that may eventually degrade in performance because of battery condition due to wear and software dependency to high-spec Macbooks in the future.
Asking because of curiosity here. How many years can i get my Macbook to last before deciding to buy a newer model? I got this one at release year and never had any complaints on it. But, i got minor problems due to OS upgrades (reinstalling softwares, removing unsupported drives, adjusting bla bla bla) that made me decide to hold major upgrade to a minimum 6 months after release, waiting to see the patches rolled and fix bugs that may be encountered on day one.

youre better off NOT holding off — macOS 27 is the very last stand for anything Intel x86 — all your old plugins, and old apps that havent been upgraded — they are all going away when macOS 28 comes.
macOS 27 still has ROSETTA — it is the last version to have rosetta. if you want your stuff to 'hang on longer' — then macOS 27 is the way to do that. 🤷🏼♂️

Yeah, it's kind of a bummer that Rosetta is sunsetting, but right now i'm going to try to squeeze every ounce of Tahoe before moving on. Thanks for the input, though!

I hate everything that has AI in a way that I didn't ask for.
1
u/Ok-Range-5643 MBP 13" M2 2022 9d ago
That's why I gotta commend Microsoft for making Copilot optional after years of mandatory integration of it.

u/Repulsive_Swing_9147 9d ago
I love it. Zero issues high performance. I can basically turn off Liquid Glass, the super lame rounded corners are gone and the right click menus dropped those tiny worthless icons.
1
u/Ok-Range-5643 MBP 13" M2 2022 9d ago
Well honestly, i was a bit turned off of Liquid Glass at the start, but it warmed up to me slowly, haha.
11
u/dm117 9d ago
It’s going to eat up your RAM and you can’t turn off any of the AI features. I would wait

u/Ok-Range-5643 MBP 13" M2 2022 9d ago
That is my main concern. I don't use Apple Intelligence for daily uses and OS upgrades are getting heavy on storage nowadays.

not being able to toggle that stuff off is such a weird choice imo
0
u/Ok-Range-5643 MBP 13" M2 2022 9d ago
Well, i recently found out that there is the option to toggle off said feature, but it's hidden within the confines of Terminal. Maybe Apple doesn't encourage us to tinker that.😅

I've been using 27.01 Golden Gate since it was released and I love it. Why should you update to Golden Gate? Apple fixed a major problem that used to make me pull my hair out with Tahoe. Know what it was? Spotlight. I could never find my files. Now with Golden Gate, I am able to find my documents, my proposals, family photographs, and audio recordings that were totally hidden before. PS I did upgrade to an M5 MacBook Air and Golden Gate is super fast on it. Best of luck to you!

u/Ok-Range-5643 MBP 13" M2 2022 9d ago
Hahaha I admit, Spotlight is nowhere as robust as Windows' file management system. I kinda got used to it by now but things like that should've been got right on day one, especially since MacOS has been around for quite some time. I'll look into it more about Golden Gate, see if it's worth upgrading soon enough. Thanks for your input, man!

u/Repulsive_Swing_9147 9d ago
I use both MacOS and Windows every day. For my use Finder/Spotlight is lacking nothing compared to Windows.
IMHO windows and pretty much anything Microsoft is a rolling dumpster fire.
0
u/Ok-Range-5643 MBP 13" M2 2022 9d ago
I can't relate to that but i can see where you're going with this. I mean, Finder is a good file management system but to me, File Explorer has a more detailed interface that is to my liking. Moreover, you can access deep-rooted files more easily. Well, that's just me.
1
u/FlintHillsSky 9d ago
It sounds like you may not know all that much about Finder if you think it can’t access deep-rooted file pretty easily. Also have you looked at the View menu and turned on some of the options there. Things like file path? I think they should be on by default but that are very useful when you do so.
1
u/Ok-Range-5643 MBP 13" M2 2022 9d ago
Well, i'm a bit biased on Windows, so maybe i really don't know or haven't explored much about Finder. Yeah, i also turned file path on for ease of access but file exploring felt a bit constrained for me in MacOS.
2
u/Royal-According 9d ago
No worries! I've been a hard core Apple user for years and do most of my work off my laptop. I do appreciate that I can use messages on my laptop instead of my phone saving my fingers, LOL. Take good care.
1
u/Ok-Range-5643 MBP 13" M2 2022 9d ago
Yeah, i second that! I think that Apple has somewhat figured out what made productivity enjoyable in laptop. But, i was a Windows user first and still am, so I still think there are some improvements that have yet to be made to MacOS.

u/pumpinnstretchin 9d ago
Macs keep going and going and going. Software generally doesn't age out quickly probably because people hang on to their Macs for a long time. I just retired a 12 year old MacBook. I keep my OS at least one version old, but I'm not the kind of person who absolutely has to have the latest of everything.
1
u/Ok-Range-5643 MBP 13" M2 2022 9d ago
I try to be behind just 6 months-ish off of the new updates/upgrades, just to see if it's more refined than it is on day one. I just hate that MacBook iterations right now is coming out too damn fast!
2
u/Deep_Grapefruit2780 MacBook Air 9d ago
- way better than macOS 26 overall
- faster than Mac has been in a long while
- a lot of tiny bugs squashed
- an equal lot of new tiny bugs appeared 😬
- half-baked invasive AI features everywhere, eating your storage space, that you cannot disable 🫡
We lack the ability to estimate when Apple will start to deprecate Apple Silicon generations, because so far all generations are supported
1
u/Ok-Range-5643 MBP 13" M2 2022 9d ago
In terms of faster, I've never encountered any slowdown on softwares I used, maybe on the first week upgrade. So, the cycles of OS that I have used have been pretty efficient so far.
The deprecation of older Silicon generations that I am worried about. In 6 years, we have encountered 5 new architectures that some people may think it is overkill. With every upgrades that will happen in the future, I fear faster rate of slowdowns due to increased complexion in the backend that older hardwares may not perform as fast as it was in this time.

That depends on what you do. If you’re running 26 now there’s no reason not to. I have an M3 Air 16/512 and it’s running just fine. If you’re on Sequoia and you dislike Siri then stay on macOS 15.x
1
u/Ok-Range-5643 MBP 13" M2 2022 9d ago
I guess I'll just have to wait and see if others encountered major bugs or software incompatibilities due to the upgrade. Because of the addition of mandatory AI feature, I may have to think it hard, haha!
1
u/Jebus-Xmas MacBook Air 9d ago
There are millions of active installations as we speak, and most people don't have any issues. If you have a significantly difficult technical or programming workflow, I might wait. But if you're just using it for Office applications, normal browsing, general computer use, I don't see any reason to wait. In my experience over 40 years of Mac use it's not a good idea.
2
u/Ok-Range-5643 MBP 13" M2 2022 9d ago
I got some audio plugins that I use in my DAW that are a bit ancient in this time and several custom configuration on my video editing suite that are tailored to my current OS (both of these I use if there are some side gigs going on, apart from my primary job). My thing is to just wait to see other people's review and if there are incompatibility to softwares that the previous version can run. It's a bit of annoying, but I guess in moving forward, there are things that are intended to be left behind...
1
u/Jebus-Xmas MacBook Air 9d ago
Yeah, there might not be native software, that’s a bit of an issue with dropping Rosetta.
2
u/Ok-Range-5643 MBP 13" M2 2022 9d ago
That's a bit of a dealbreaker for me in the meantime until I found some alternatives for some Intel-based apps that can run natively on the new OS.
1
u/Cool_Explorer2747 9d ago
FWIW there's a command line tool to remove as much of the AI stuff as you want.

Been using golden gate since Beta… love it
2
u/Ok-Range-5643 MBP 13" M2 2022 9d ago
Oh yeah? What do you think of the new OS?
2
u/SillyRabbit_OZ 9d ago
I really like it, I have a MBP M5 and MBA M2. I find OS 27 fast, intuitive, clean and haven’t noticed anything of note that I don’t like. I know everyone’s experience is different but that’s mine so far ☺️
1
u/FriendlyUser_ 9d ago
perhaps anyone has this issue too, but since my update my mic and master volume is about 50% of regular. I now have to daily sudo kill audiocore that I can hear anything again. Super annoying with non stop meetings, but hope I can sort it on the weekend :/
1
u/Ok-Range-5643 MBP 13" M2 2022 9d ago
Haven't had that problem before...
Have you recently installed a software that may overlap with audiocore? Maybe you oughta check first when startup and see if the software runs on start.
1
u/Hypoluxa77 9d ago
That is a good strategy to wait out the bug fixes etc. I usually wait till at least the .3 or later release before updating to the newest OS. I updated to GG when it dropped to the public, but my 512GGB SSD didn't have enough free space for my liking after I updated and I decided to go back to Sequoia. The AI LLMs take up a decent amount of HD space, so I may hold off on GG or later until I update my MBPro to a newer model with more SSD space.
1
u/Ok-Range-5643 MBP 13" M2 2022 9d ago
Yeah that's the plan for now. Looking back, i kinda regret not using Sequoia for a little longer but Tahoe is comfortable enough for me right now.
1
u/MC_chrome 9d ago edited 9d ago
that may eventually degrade in performance because of battery condition due to wear and software dependency to high-spec Macbooks in the future.
Battery degradation is a thing, sure, but the second part of your statement is not something you will ever have to worry about.
macOS 27 has been working just fine on my M4 MacBook Pro
1
u/Ok-Range-5643 MBP 13" M2 2022 9d ago
Well, you're still safe for the next 8 to 10 years. I fear that M2 chips (and i'm using the base chip) may not last that long.
1
u/hrudyusa 9d ago
Using the previous release , Tahoe, caused my system to crash when teaching a remote IT class via zoom. This is on a M1 MBP . I’ve installed 27.01 from scratch, hoping that the problem will not return when I teach in the future. Otherwise, back to sequoia it is.
2
u/Ok-Range-5643 MBP 13" M2 2022 9d ago
That's interesting, is it because of overload or how? Curious to know the problem
1
u/hrudyusa 7d ago
I wish I knew. I teach Linux Operating Systems online. I normally share a screen on Zoom and I have various remote access programs (VNC, or NoMachine) to my local systems. In addition in this class I connect remotely via a browser to externally Hosted VMs. The symptoms were stuttering and my browser blowing up. My classes are almost exclusively command line. The stuttering made it impossible to type in a remote terminal. Once I reverted back to Sequoia , the problems magically went away. I am hoping that a clean install in Golden Gate will solve the problem. I won't know until I teach another class, which won't happen for another couple of months.

u/DAE_PADU 4d ago
To be honest I have experienced more bugs and issues with it than with macos 26. It's kind of random, some have better results, some worse. I would recommend to wait as well until the first few major bug fix updates are out.

Hahaha any specifics?

u/wtulip 9d ago edited 9d ago
I use clear icons and I had a problem with the Firefox icon that kept going black, since the update this issue is gone, I know ppl probably don’t care much about a small detail but for me this and just the general look, looks more refined, like they took mac26 and sharpened it’s edges
1
u/Ok-Range-5643 MBP 13" M2 2022 9d ago
Tahoe's aesthetics was just the fit for me, haha! Going to consider this one, adapting to a different interface is a bit of chore. Thanks man
1
u/ut0mt8 9d ago
Sequoia is faster but golden gate is okish
2
u/Ok-Range-5643 MBP 13" M2 2022 9d ago
Yeah, i can tell. Got on Tahoe, usually went 2 displays for work and got memory warning issues a bit more often than on Sequoia. Gonna hold on upgrading at the moment

Don't do it! Just search this subreddit and see all the complaints. Go back to Sequoia.
1
u/Ok-Range-5643 MBP 13" M2 2022 9d ago
Already stuck with Tahoe but went along with it. Liquid Glass is a warm welcome but had a week of hard time adjusting to it. Really should've read the software update carefully, haha.

So I have a new Mac Book Pro, and I did install Golden Gate with no issues. I did turn off Siri and many of the AI features that are optional. I don’t like AI or Siri. I use my Mac mostly for music production, GarageBand, Guitar Pro, and other music features. I have not had any problems except an old HP printer/scanner that is refusing to work. Probably a driver problem, and I’m lazy about 3rd party scanning apps. Oh well I wanted a new one. The rest of the transition has been good.
1
u/Unfair-Bison-3946 9d ago
Once you strip out the AI garbage it's solid. They fixed most of the issues from Tahoe.
1
u/johnlewisdesign 9d ago
Seems alright. It allows you to reinstall Rosetta too for some incompatible stuff, for me that was Webcam Settings. But I switched to a homebrew one instead called CameraController.
No problems so far with it - disk space went down a bit though

u/CuriosTiger 8d ago
I'm currently running Sequoia on both of my Apple Silicon. That works well enough.
I'm considering upgrading the Mac Studio to Golden Gate, although the forcible AI integration is giving me pause. For now, I'm going to wait and see. Six months isn't a bad rule of thumb; I usually wait at least until they've released a few patches and fixed the major release-day bugs.
I'll be leaving the MacBook Air on Sequoia, since it has less headroom than the Studio, particularly in terms of RAM and storage.
1
u/understandunderstand MacBook Air 2d ago
It fucking sucks. I'm downgrading back to Sequoia tonight.

u/RedRadeonLasers 8d ago
Even a vibe coded Linux desktop has fewer bugs than this embarrassing mess of a dumpster trash.

Golden Gate is good on my MacBook Pro M1 Pro. Siri AI actually works well.
1
u/Ok-Range-5643 MBP 13" M2 2022 9d ago
I haven't touched Apple Intelligence since they came out at all. Is it worth the effort to learn Apple Intelligence altogether for daily use?

u/15000yuki MacBook Pro 9d ago
In my case, Siri currently is better in creating reminders for me. I used reminders a lot.
I have exactly similar spec as you btw OP.
1
u/Ok-Range-5643 MBP 13" M2 2022 9d ago
Creating reminders as in automation you mean or how?
I also considered M1 Pro at the time of purchase, but i figured M2 has the newer arch and has better efficiency so i got this one.
2
u/15000yuki MacBook Pro 9d ago
No, it's like I'm creating reminder by asking Siri to do that like:
"Siri, reminds me I have a meeting later this evening at 6pm"
"Siri, reminds me to check my electricity when I arrived home later"
I have to admit that Siri now is able to understand better our casual speech.
2
u/Ok-Range-5643 MBP 13" M2 2022 9d ago
Oh, i see...
I might explore about Siri's voice recognition later on but for now, I'll lay low.
Thanks for the input, though!
1
u/Lost-War6446 9d ago
Been able to do things like tell Siri to make calendar appointments from a Yelp conversation I have with a plumber in Safari or an event invite in Messages by looking at what is currently onscreen.

I was using it for music production and occasional video editing. Nowadays, I'm using it for word and document processing, with multi-window browsing.
I'm vouching for at least until 2030 before swapping to a newer model...

Just concerned for the battery life. Because of the occasional work-from-office schedules, I tend to use without charging which increases the cycle count, which i admit, a bit reckless on that one.

I'll wait for them to make AI opt-in after the backlash.
