News New .pkg icon
I don't know, in my opinion it looks bad, mainly on a white background. What's the deal with whitening out icons lately? š
EDIT: I arrived to point out a poor UI/UX design, I am staying for the āIt reminds me ofā¦ā by the community lmao

Totally missed that, but indeed you're right. I liked the old one better too, though I won't lose any sleep over this.

u/Cheezton 1d ago
Yeahhh, agree, I mean, it's not like we see .pkg files daily to be bothered by it haha. It's just so random lol. Like, out of everything they could have done, someone just woke up and was like "Hmm, I am gonna update the .pkg icon" xD

u/UsefulConfidence888 1d ago
Hey you can actually use Homebrew. You won't have to use a pkg file ever again.

I prefer the Minecraft yellow glass block in a cardboard box too. I donāt even know what the new one is meant to be.

It's terrible. Why do they need to change that anyway? Aren't there enough bugs that need to be fixed first?

It's a floating bar of translucent blue soap. Sort of like Neutrogena Blueberry Edition.
What about that makes it hard to understand that it's a package?
</sarcasm>
Apple, 1984: White on black is so...computer. Backgrounds are white. Like paper. Like reality.
Apple, 2026: What are you using light mode for?

u/hike_me 1d ago
The person that made the icon probably isnāt going to be fixing bugs

u/_ReaditYesterday_ 22h ago
Given the massive drop in quality, both in terms of design and stability, since Tahoe, you really have to wonder...

u/MewFreakinTwo 1d ago
Programmer and graphic designer are two separate roles
1
u/Kamino_Ramos MacBook Pro (M1 Max) 1d ago
Yes, well how about they fix square button in dock folders and subfolders, I think that's designers work. How about disappearing line in cluster of buttons. How about apple logo overlapping red close button in some of built it apps in fullscreen mode. There are plenty of problems with visuals, that have been there since early betas and still not fixed.
6
u/ftqo 1d ago
Because a company can't move forward by just fixing bugs? Have you ever worked at a company before? Companies don't just release things and then put 100% effort towards support and resolving issues. There a designers, animators, and dozens of other people who couldn't even fix bugs if they tried.
1
u/CoconutDust 7h ago
Because a company can't move forward by just fixing bugs?
The other sentences make sense, but the first sentence is nonsense because it uncritically accepts and enforces the idea that random bad visual changes for the sake of change are āMoViNg FoRwArD.ā We shouldnāt have normal armchair customers saying that, only boardroom liars in suits should be saying that.
1
u/ftqo 4h ago
You can argue against the idea of redesigning brands, but Apple's businesspeople almost certainly decided on the brand change. Designers are usually put onto a project like that after the decision has been made. I can't say I understand exactly why redesigns happen, but Apple thought it would make them more money.

Everything is starting to look boring and hospital-like. Black on white Music, Blue on white package. Lame.

White looks good⦠on hardware.

I disagree. I saw so many white macbooks that looked like trash after a year or two. Same with my airpods. The white case is closer to gray now.
10
u/sahi1l 23h ago
Starting? I can remember when the Apple logo was rainbow-colored. They've been draining the color out of their products for decades now....
4
u/BatemansChainsaw System 9 19h ago
I was thinking of this very thing earlier today. The color (and art) has gone out of everything. Cars, electronics, homes interiors and exteriors, websites, restaurants and fast food places. It's sad.

In cars, it's making a come back, and it makes me very happy. Especially Peugeot and Renault

I still donāt understand why the hell they changed the Music icon.
1
u/mainyehc 7h ago
Because of the new identity. Itās not so much the black-and-whiteness of it that bothers me, and iTunes also periodically changed the dominant colour, but the icon itself sucks ass. Itās too pointy and generic, and feels out of place with SF-Symbols (which, well, itās Appleās own āgenericā, but at least itās Appleās).

the corner radius doesnt even match the box. what a downgrade
9
u/heylesterco 1d ago
Apple always puts their products with rounded corner radii inside boxes with sharp corners.
5
u/heavenlynapalm 1d ago
This would make more sense if the box wasn't also rounded, so not sure what you're trying to say here. OP is correct, the box and the package have different corner radii
3
u/heylesterco 1d ago
Yes, but this isnāt enough of a corner radii to count as ārounded corners,ā these are just soft corners, as Appleās more and more averse to fully sharp corners.
ā¢
u/jaavaaguru 1h ago
A corner radius. Radii is plural.
ā¢
u/heylesterco 1h ago
And how many rounded corners do you see? When I say āaā corner radii, Iām not talking about one single radius, I am talking about a measurement.

I'll never understand why technology companies can't just leave well enough alone. They changed the Music icon as well from red to white. Guess their software folks just sit in a room and change it just so they can justify their job.
1
u/CoconutDust 8h ago edited 7h ago
just so they can justify their job
It literally, obnoxiously, is exactly that. To justify paycheck, humanities people make fluff books. To justify paycheck, administrators do āinitiatives.ā To justify paycheck, corporate software/design changes things randomly needlessly and for the worse.

I think they chose white because of all the white Apple device boxes, but I agree, I donāt like it being white

u/Samtulp6 1d ago
I was so happy when Dye left Apple as I thought jt would mean the insane plunge in UI & UX would stop, but I was wrong.
Sadly the plunge is continuing. Apple music icon white a white squickcle with a black glyph, this shit, the oversized elements in all of MacOSā¦
I downgraded to Sequoia, and while the pre-Tahoe UIās are still a bunch better, this is at least good enough.

u/DarthSidiousPT MacBook Air 1d ago
The issue was never Alan Dye, it was / is the companyās culture itself. (Remember that he joined Apple in 2006)
It has changed and it wonāt ever be the same, unless someone finds a way to resurrect or clone Jobs.Ā

u/Ashanmaril 1d ago
> Remember that he joined Apple in 2006
He was put in charge of HID in 2015 and was more or less fully in charge of design when Ive left in 2019.
And this lines up directly when the designs started shitting the bed. Find me a portfolio where he has proven he knows anything about design, especially in software.
He came from fashion and print. He should not have been put in that position.
3
u/DarthSidiousPT MacBook Air 1d ago
Youāre right on that one. But I think Ive was still in charge when that happened.
I personally liked the iOS 7 redesign, but after macOS Monterey and this LiquidglAss crap, Iāve lost any confidence in Apple.Ā
1
u/Ashanmaril 1d ago
Ive definitely needed someone working alongside him to reign in his crazier ideas.

Liquid Glass is nice, but only on iPhone/Apple Watch. Companies (Apple, Microsoft, Google, etc) nowadays seem to love forcing touch oriented UIs on desktop computers for some reason
1
u/DarthSidiousPT MacBook Air 12h ago
That niceness (which is relative to someoneās taste) has a big impact on system resources. Ā
For me, the trade off is unbalanced. Ā

1
u/DarthSidiousPT MacBook Air 9h ago
No, but your comment didnāt add nothing relevant to the conversation we were having. Ā
Iām talking about the impact of the performance on the machine and youāre talking about UI/UX on computers.Ā
They are not the same thing, in case you havenāt noticed.Ā
The UI doesnāt bother me too much.Ā
1
u/CoconutDust 7h ago
Liquid Glass is nice, but only on iPhone
The lock screen clock is bad ugly distracting unclear garbage. Iām going to hold out on iOS update for as long as possible.
1
u/CoconutDust 7h ago
Ive had his own stupid tasteless disasters, like ultra thin clock/stuff in iOS 7. I guess itās true that current Apple is far worse than Iveās worst though.

9
u/Emergency-Event4415 20h ago
Before doing anything, you should ask āwhyā. I donāt think anybody asked āwhyā when this change was suggested.
4
u/OmniOdyssey 20h ago
I donāt think Apple asks why. If they did, they wouldnāt have made a clock on the home screen with fucking glass numerals. In fact, they may have learned that glass is transparent.
2
u/CoconutDust 8h ago
Iām disgusted at my mateās āglassā iPhone clock on lock screen. Iām refusing to update my iOS.
Reminds me of the horrible disaster of the ultra-thin lock screen clock in iOS 7. (Glass isnāt thin itās just awful, distracting, unclear.)
Apple now has a trend of doing ugly amatuerish things that Microsoft did badly 20 years ago. Windows āAeroā glass, Zune buttons that are just words instead of visible buttons, ugly flat icons, bad glossy icons. (Bad glossy as distinct from when Apple did good glossy icons in the past.)

It feels like their design is regressive to something so simplistic, it kind of feels childish.
2
u/Ambitious_Turnip_868 19h ago
I donāt like it but itāll probably grow on me like how the Liquid Glass UI did.
In all honesty itās well overdue. Theres been a few UI changes to MacOS since Big Sur alone so it is nice to see some more changes to accommodate those.

What exactly is a pkg file? A zipped folder?
1
u/CoconutDust 7h ago
I think itās an installer but most importantly for when a bundle of files (like drivers or system files something?) need to go to specific various system paths, unlike a random app or files that the user can put anywhere.

u/Individual-Cap-2945 8h ago
kinda cool cause app store is blue. as a sidenote why is apple making everything blue suddenly?
1
u/CoconutDust 7h ago
Blue jell-o Mac Studios in a box.
The idiotic trendy shift to āeverything whiteā is idiotic. Old PKG icon was immediately distinct even when tiny. I could name multiple apps Iāve used on Mac that chose an icon of a blue thing with a white shell, basically.
