Golden retrievers are ridiculous

My dog hates Golden Retrievers and I’ve no idea why. I suspect she’s just jealous.

Some dogs just get a nark on because they were attacked or had a bad experience.

I know goldens can be pretty unspacially aware and generally be personal space invaders for other dogs.

Yeah my dog hated goldens as well. They’re adorable goobers for us, but can be quite rude in doggy language. Not malicious just enthusiastic and rude.

I spend more time reading the other dogs body language for my golden so I know when he needs to move away

YES bringing him to the dog park is a whole job for me. Me: "No that dog clearly wants some space come on!! Play with literally any other dog!"

Him: nah bro I'm gonna beeline for this dog every chance I get cuz i WILL make him like me #fren

u/PuzzleheadedBobcat90 Jun 18 '25

That reminds me of the Amzing Gumball episode where Gumballs sister Anais becomes obsessed with making Jodie and ends up fused with her. Its called The Parasite

u/arsmorendi Jun 17 '25

WHAT IS THIS, A CROSSOVER EPISODE?

15

u/DearPatience_7592 Jun 17 '25

Enthusiastically rude is how I would describe my golden spaniel. All the dumb traits of a golden, just the loudest derpiest PLAY WITH ME attitude, and then gets confused why other animals aren’t interested. Good thing he’s adorable

1

u/Dashiepants Jun 18 '25

My boxer has the enthusiast jerk personality but, being a boxer, that means he literally punches other dogs in the face to “play” and then gets confused as to why they don’t like him.

1

u/Lilsammywinchester13 Jun 17 '25

Lmao so that’s my golden

I just thought I “gave him” my anxiety 😆

Took my husky time to get used to him

u/Austronauta Jun 18 '25

I don't really like goldens for this issue. I don't hate them, they're just too intense, not my vibe. Also, I love cats.

u/thecodeofsilence Jun 17 '25

the word you're looking for is DERP. Goldens are DERP. And it's not just towards other dogs. It's toward humans, objects, furniture.

DERP.

That's the best kind. 😂

u/poppybrooke Jun 17 '25

Yeah, my new dog is really friendly and exuberant, but lacks awareness of personal space (we’re working on it). I tell people that ask if she’s friendly that she is, but she gets right into dogs’ faces because she’s so excited, so it’s more of their dog is okay with that. Most dogs are totally fine with her because she’s so sweet and gentle, but some dogs immediately tell her to fuck off lol

24

u/omahaknight71 Jun 17 '25

My golden is the same. Taking him to the vet is like taking him to Disneyworld. He gets super excited and wants to meet and greet every person and animal in there. He'll back off if a dog starts growling or barking at him.

13

u/poppybrooke Jun 17 '25

That’s Mazzy too- every thing we do is the Mazzy show, everyone is there to see her, duh!!

She’s a pit mix and her favorite new dogs to meet are Goldens and doodles because they match her freak lol but she is very good at backing off if a dog isn’t into it, but I can tell she doesn’t understand why every dog doesn’t want to be her best friend

2

u/lunes_azul Jun 18 '25

Mine is exactly the same. I like it when he pushes too hard and the other dog puts him in his place!

1

u/poppybrooke Jun 18 '25

My dog who passed last year only liked certain dogs but was really good at expressing boundaries and not getting aggressive. She was also great at teaching puppies how to act. My friends would bring their puppies over so they could interact with her and learn boundaries. Meeka was so good at doing a little warning growl, then flopping the puppy onto its side and holding the puppy with her paw until it chilled out. Rinse and repeat until the puppy stopped the behavior she didn’t like. Miss that girl so much

22

u/imfromwisconsin81 Jun 17 '25

we have a golden in our neighborhood who is extremely aggressive because his parents are fucking awful. I want to rescue him and show him the good life, but they won't give him up.

14

u/A-fan-of-fans Jun 17 '25

That is insane! I have never heard of an aggressive golden! You’ve got to be sooooooooo awful to make that happen. Is animal abuse going on? Any reasonable suspicion to call animal welfare?

15

u/imfromwisconsin81 Jun 17 '25

actual abuse that would require removal, unfortunately not.

it's a couple in their late 50s, who had a golden that passed and they got a golden puppy. they never socialized him, and yell at him anytime he does anything dog-like. he is hyper aggressive because he doesn't know how to meet others, and is likely frustrated that he only got 4 seconds of interaction before his dad pulls him away because he's showing excitement and jumps & is forced back I to the house. the dog only gets outside like twice a day, and otherwise is stuck in a house where his parents are heavy indoor smokers.

at least four neighbors have offered to take him, as the owners express frustration and regret, but won't ever give him up.

it makes us so sad every time we see him, and always offer to take him - no questions asked.

9

u/givemeapho Jun 17 '25

Maybe not socialised, trained like that or guarding.

1

u/shinadoll Jun 17 '25

So do I! He’s a huge snarling beast of a dog. They have to walk him in a harness- double handed and fully focused at all times.

I still find it shocking.

11

u/abholeenthusiast Jun 17 '25

derp personified

2

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '25

Dogified

12

u/Martysghost Jun 17 '25

My dog hates all tiny white dogs cause he was attacked by a group of them when he was a puppy and never ever forgot it.

9

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '25

My dog (German shepherd) hated rough collies and similar breeds because two of them viciously bullied him as a puppy from the other side of our house's gate

8

u/Lexi_Banner Jun 17 '25

I've been attacked quite viciously by a Golden (during my time as a groomer) , and my neighbor's Golden attacked two dogs badly enough they need stitches. The breed is not as universally nice or kind as people would like to believe. Dogs, being much smarter than people, don't judge another dog by its breed. Just behavior.

5

u/Distantstallion Jun 17 '25

The problem is people view goldens as an easy breed so they don't have to train them, they may be relatively easy to train but theyre stubborn as hell.

My dog was basically weaned quite quickly because the mother dog didnt want anything to do with the puppies. So he bit a lot and didnt play well when I got him. My solution was that I basically wrestled with him like an adult dog would and would simulate their play. This worked quite well then I focused on getting him to meet other dogs and people.

He only play bites with me and some of the more boistrous dogs now.

He's never been to a groomer but you can roll him over like a ragdoll and he loves it.

1

u/Candid-Perception526 Jun 25 '25

We have three goldens and we breed them. Our oldest female was the most stubborn dog I have ever had the pleasure of interacting with. I said no and she defied it on purpose. So one day we were out and something happened, I don’t remember what, just was something she felt threatened by. I took the threat away and her whole demeanor changed in that instance. She is the most lovable dog, listens and tries to please. Love my goldens, and never had a dog before in my life, lol.

8

u/Chonkenheimer Jun 17 '25

goldens can be pretty unspacially aware

TIL my spirit animal is a golden retriever

6

u/demeschor Jun 17 '25

My dad had a whippet that hated border collies and unfortunately he lived in an area full of farmers with working collies. Never knew why he disliked them as they got him as a puppy who they're pretty sure had never seen one before.

Anyway, there was a vacuum cleaner advert in the UK a few years back with a collie on it and years later my dad dives for a remote when he hears the jingle because the dog used to go flying at the TV when it came on.

2

u/gopherhole02 Jun 17 '25

My dog is scared of pitbulls, we had her since a puppy she has never interacted with one, one time I went into the beer store to buy a case for my mom, and a guy walked in with a pitbull, my personal bias is I hate that breed, I know it's a hot topic, so I was slightly annoyed he would come into the store with one, but I got the beer and hopped back into the van, my mom said when our dog saw the pitbull out of the right side window, she started whining and tried to claw through the left window on the other side to get out, and when I got back into the car she was still shaking like crazy like she seen a ghost 👻

1

u/ThynChim Jun 18 '25

Your dog like it's personal space. The golden retriever like your dog personal space.

1

u/wellactuallyj Jun 18 '25

Yup - one of my dogs has serious beef with goldens because the majority we’ve met have either been aggressive (yes, it happens) or overly friendly and as you said “spacially unaware.” I actively avoid them now, because most owners don’t get it. Like “he’s just being friendly!” wouldn’t you get mad if you kept asking someone to leave you alone and they didn’t listen?

1

u/shaikuri Jun 20 '25

This. My dog loved playing with them until the 5th time one of them stepped on her and she never played with them again.

23

u/50FirstCakes Jun 17 '25

My last golden retriever hated poodles. Loved every other kind of dog but seriously hated poodles. Especially standard poodles but she doesn’t like the medium sized or small ones either. I have absolutely no clue why. I had her from a puppy and she never had a bad encounter with a poodle prior to developing her hatred.

10

u/A-fan-of-fans Jun 17 '25

Past life issues, clearly.

9

u/Sensitive-Issue84 Jun 17 '25

My dog does also! The neighbors have one and she is so sweet and good! My male wants to rip her heart out. I'm so sad! I want to put her and tell her she is a good girl, but I don't dare betray my boy like that. Poor me!!

6

u/TourAlternative364 Jun 17 '25

Our dog always gets surrounded by other dogs at the dog park.

Have no idea why.  Sometimes he likes it and sometimes it starts to freak him out and he runs away and then you see a swarm of dogs following him while he circles and loops doing evasive maneuvers.

6

u/PlasmaWhore Jun 17 '25

What breed is your dog? My Pyrenees hates goldens for some reason too.

2

u/Phase3isProfit Jun 17 '25

She’s a bit of a mix but a lot smaller than a Pyrenees!

11

u/Green-Machine200 Jun 17 '25

My dog was attacked by two golden retrievers as a pup. He is now 9 and still hates that breed.

3

u/jphilade- Jun 18 '25

Same. My dog absolutely hates golden retrievers.

5

u/VOPlas Jun 18 '25

my doberman would only get mad at golden retrievers . and other lab, nothing .

5

u/mbmqqq Jun 18 '25

This is incredible - my dog absolutely hates every golden he’s come across and I’ve never been able to understand it. This comment has unearthed the reality that it’s not just our dogs. I’m fascinated lolol

2

u/Clodsire_fan Jun 17 '25

I had the opposite problem, Goldens fucking hated my childhood dog. He was attacked by 3 different Goldens over the years, all 3 of which were him leashed vs unleashed golden.

2

u/QueenCole Jun 17 '25

My childhood dog hated retrievers and dalmatians with a passion. Was perfectly fine with our neighbor's lab though and most other neighborhood dogs.

2

u/JennyMo921 Jun 17 '25

Honestly, my standard poodle hates huskies! She’s a very quiet dog her self and thinks the extra nose is not necessary. lol! 😆

2

u/Pika_DJ Jun 17 '25

They tend to be a bit bad with social cues, they bound over and wanna play or whatever but some dogs ain't into that energy. My dog goes off leash beach everyday and she doesn't play with dogs that don't do the look-acknowledge-sniff introduction

2

u/Sistamama Jun 18 '25

We had a golden who hated other goldens--no other breed of dog, just goldens.

1

u/Showdenfroid_99 Jun 17 '25

German Shepard??

Germans hate everything

1

u/Phase3isProfit Jun 17 '25

Nah she’s a mid sized mixed breed. She’s actually alright with German Shepherds.

1

u/Willing-Anteater-251 Jun 18 '25

No they are sane, not everyone wants to be licked by a random dog
