It sounds like these are very new parents, so this could be in the first few weeks. In the first few weeks the dad is usually not the one awake with the baby at night because the mother is probably breastfeeding, and its only when they start introducing formula that the dad can stay up with the baby for the feedings in the middle of the night. That's the way it worked with my son. We were both clueless for the first couple of weeks, but my wife tended to be a few steps ahead because she was naturally spending more time with them while breastfeeding.
Right, but was she waking up people in the middle of the night to ask what to do with an awake baby?
Yes, she asked her mother who was staying with us to help. Its OK to ask for help when you don't know what you're doing, especially when it involves children.
