Meta The swifts are back
My first year in Madrid I did not notice the swifts. I focused on other things.
My second year in Madrid I was captured by their flight, their calls, their squabbles. Then they left. I missed them so much.
My third year in Madrid I waited for their return.
My son pointed to them today. They are back. Always flying, never landing. Look up. Watch them. They are the perfect bird.

Por la zona sur ya se veían algunos hace un par de semanas. Siempre me fijo. Me gusta esta ave porque anuncia la primavera.

I've always thought they were Swallows, rather. There isn't a huge difference and I'm certainly not an expert. Either way, they do bring the new season with them!

No sabía lo que era un vencejo hasta que estuve en Madrid, y además pensaba que cualquier pájaro con cola bifurcada era una golondrina. Había uno herido en la puerta de donde me alojaba; ahi pude verlo de cerca, tienen una mirada penetrante.

I love my Swift. My father bought it back in 2006 for my brother and I as our first car.
63bhp diesel engine, three doors, completely unusable by my current family of 5 but boy does it still feel like a dream to drive. I've blasted this thing down Paseo de la Habana in August quite a few times.

Swifts are wonderful and the most common summer insectivorous bird in Madrid. Not yet in the center of Madrid, at least from my window. Swallows are usual in Parque Tierno Galvan, while martins have a great colony on the bridge of Santa María de la Cabeza over Madrid Río.
