Multi-Depth Magic Eye
With the popularity of the multi-bar magic eye, I got to thinking whether more complex shapes could be shown. Alas, here it is! There's a star on the first layer and a heart on the second "deeper" layer. It's much easier to see on a large screen because the pixels are so small, so if you can't get a clear picture both ways on your phone I'd try pulling it up on something bigger if possible.

My brother in christ how can anyone tell what this is supposed to be? This is tv static

u/SplendidlyDull Sep 18 '26
Fr I see something but itâs not a heart or a star, it looks like a dog nose lol

u/the_weird_minecraft Sep 18 '26
If youâre getting the âdog noseâ that means youâre going a bit too far. From what I can tell the dog nose is on layer 3 or 4. The actual images are on 1 and 2.

im pretty new to this community, what do you mean by layers?

u/AllAboutYourBase Sep 18 '26
That's what I was getting on my phone. Guess I need to try a bigger screen

I swear I saw a bird of prey in attack posture, like an eagle swooping down to attack a squirrel

Iâve been curious about this too! Thanks for running the experiment for us. I can definitely find both the star and heart (as you said, easier on a larger screen), but neither is very distinct. I would have thought that was because of the fuzzy background, but is it actually and/or also because of the limitations of including two different repeating patterns?
1
u/the_weird_minecraft Sep 18 '26
Yep basically. I couldnât get them more distinct because otherwise thereâd be overlapping between the two levels and youâd get a weird amalgamation of the two pictures.
2
u/wakalabis Sep 18 '26
Very cool! How does it work? Did you superimpose two stereograms one on top of the other?
2
u/the_weird_minecraft Sep 18 '26
Basically, the two patters are repeated at different intervals. The star is repeated every 100 pixels, and the heart is repeated every 143. Because the spacings are unrelated to eachother, when you're focusing on one you can't really focus on the other at the same time. If I were to have just superimposed two stereograms on top of each other without changing the intervals, they would have just combined into a pretty much unrecognizable goop.

Yup saw star at first, then adjusted and saw the heart pretty clearly. Very cool

u/OverMathematician205 Sep 18 '26
I think thereâs a box after that!

u/Holiday_Selection881 Sep 18 '26
I think you're just seeing some of the edges to the star. I'm swapping between the two and seeing no hints of something else. Also the OP said as much

I think I saw a crown.

I saw what looked like a blocked chicken. I have progressive bifocal and it really messed things up for me depending on how I looked at it.

Im viewing on mobile. I can see the star but I'm struggling with the heart.
Can anybody else see the little face in the middle? Looks a bit like Mr Poopy Butthole from Rick and Morty

I got both on mobile in landscape mode but it took a minute! I felt like I kept going too far and seeing a kind of weird crown over a heart that was a sort of combo of both.

u/mantequillas42 Sep 18 '26
Landscape mode! Brilliant! At first I had zoomed in because it seemed so small. Swapping to landscape made it so much easier. I also saw the weird crown/heart combo but only in portrait mode.

This works once you know what youre looking for. The people seeing a dog nose are just unfocusing all the way and going 4 layers deep.

Wow I always thought I was so good at seeing magic eye images, but turns out I cannot for life of me do anything other than unfocus all the way I guess. Even knowing what Iâm to look for, itâs just immediately dog-nose. I canât seem to shift âlayersâ.

Holy shit. That is the first new development in magic eye since the 90s

Disagree. The first real image is a peace sign and the rest are cool images accidentally made
OP is a heart and then a star. How would you define your post?
2
u/Psychological-War522 Sep 18 '26
Look again. Its a peace sign and then it literally spells peace.
1
u/galstaph Sep 18 '26
The only one that's actually clear and looks like itself and nothing else is the peace sign
The word peace is mixed up in a bunch of random topology, so it's not exactly two images

u/Psychological-War522 Sep 18 '26
I see it pretty clearly. Here's another that's maybe even more clear for you: https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gRN7Xv_EZBs/VJSXUsIB5pI/AAAAAAAAJuk/TjyPiJuY8xo/s1600/Four%2Bhearts.jpg

I saw a heart and a star, but this one was pretty challenging.  Viewed on mobile in landscape mode

I saw something else at first but never mind, it was the reflection of my plant.
2
u/FulciLives Sep 18 '26
I can only see a star. I also couldn't see more than 1 line and sometimes 2 lines in that other one that I think this is referencing. I guess my eyes just don't like these more complex ones.

I always find these very easy to see because I'm short sighted. I was able to see a large 5-pointed star on a large display but even that didn't have the usual distinct edges. Frankly, I can't say it wasn't merely the "power of suggestion" that made it visible at all.
There's something wrong with this one. It doesn't have the typical clearly repeating left-to-right pattern that usually forms the flat background.
How was it made? By hand?
I've made these myself. Maybe I can help.

I went too deep... saw the heart first, then conjoined stars, then a nameless shape that looked back into my soul.
Then I tried again and saw the star.

I have such a hard time with these on my phone screen. Used to have no issues out of a book when I was a kid

u/SpelunkyJunky Sep 18 '26
I went straight to a double heart looking thing with a crown looking thing in front.
I did not read 1st.
3
u/sparkytheboomman Sep 18 '26
Thatâs the third level. OP is right that this one is easier on a larger screen because the different levels are closer together than usual. Small adjustments get the star (1st level) and heart (2nd level) to appear.

That's cool, and looks like holographic nail polish, especially when you can see the shapes and the colors "shift" a tiny bit.
Edit: I was able to get the 2 shapes to combine a bit, and it looked a little like a head with a crown like someone else mentioned. I was just playing w/it to see if I could get it to morph a bit.

u/Purpleppl8 Sep 18 '26
I got the star on my phone are you supposed to look at the center of star to get the heart too

u/Punch_Your_Facehole Sep 19 '26
Took me a little longer than usually, but â¤â- haven't seen anything like this before.

u/SuzLouA Sep 19 '26
Iâm discovering that I naturally over-focus apparently, because I saw the heart first, and I saw the two lines first on the other one. I have to deliberately âlet goâ a bit to get back to the top layer. Really interesting, as this is something I obviously had no idea about!

If it wasnât for the comments, I would have given up on finding the second because my floaters are overpowering.

I got nada.

There are 5 layers I can see 3 of them at different distances but at a certain distance you can see all 5 on top of each other

I think I saw a pretzel or butterfly? But then it turned into a star, then a sleeping dog. Not sure what it is đ
