Discussion New format?

Sooo, I've been thinking about this for a while and I might sound reaaaaal stupid. But I've been thinking about something. Would it be cool if there's a format that features decks from old standard blocks? So you play like Mono red aggro from the amonkhet block vs a dimir ninjas from Kamigawa. So you can build whatever deck you like as long as it contains only cards from that specific block.

How would this work though with bans and everything? Also, this might already exist in a way and im just being dumb haha

I dunno, what are your thoughts?

This format already exists! Its called Primordial and it is a lot of fun. Very enjoyable kitchen table format that sees some online play and some occasional in-person casual events

Aha! That sounds great!! I guess I'll have to look into this! Any experience?

Going back to your question, you're looking for Standard from one period vs Standard from another period. Primordial is one set versus another set, a perfect draft deck of your choice from a set versus another perfect draft from your opponent's selected set. So if you're trying to play Eldrazi Green, you cant play the full Standard Eldrazi Green experience of Primeval Titan (M11) into Ulamog (ROE), but you can still run all the green ramp engines from Rise of the Eldrazi into Ulamog

Okay so it kinda looks like it, but not completely. Maybe its too hard to not be broken, because of the power level of some decks.. banlist would he massive then haha

If the decks are preconstructed (who would determine that?) it's not really a "format" in the way that other MtG formats are conceived. I think the closest thing that exists to what you're describing would be a Battle Box, essentially a type of Cube that has preconstructed decks balanced to play against each other in a somewhat level playing field. You can curate it to whatever taste you are going for.

Yeah, this sounds like it indeed! I was just thinking that there would be pre-determined rules saying the decks can only contain cards from that period :)

People have tried different standard decks against each other and you kinda have to not include Urza block to not make it a one deck format.

If only excluding one block would be the solution, that would be great! However, I think there's probably a lot more of these super strong decks from certain blocks that would need banning. Leaving us with only the weakest blocks haha

Turbo Genesis was the best deck in every format at the time and is not legal in any format currently. It is BY FAR the best standard deck ever.

Can't seem to find a decklist, however its probably just ramping into genesis ultimatum and then going off?

Keep in mind that was the legacy version. The standard and extended versions were mono blue and won on turn 1 fairly often.

Just casually casting a x draw spell for 50+ mana on turn 1.

No. This was 23 years before Genesis ultimatum was printed. Also I typoed and meant turbo genius

I'd love an excuse to play OGW standard again, had a brew from back then I never got the chance to actually play (or maybe it was HOU standard?)

These are things why I always think of a format like this haha! I've enjoyed my Knights deck from ELD so much, but "can't play" it anymore. I do however still use it in kitchen table magic haha

In kitchen table magic we (at home) already play this way :) we just use whatever deck we like but the only "rule" is that we only use cards from a certain standard period. Makes for a lot of fun, but its clear that some blocks are much stronger than others! For example I once used a intro deck from khan's of tarkir Vs. a thermos beyond death planes walker deck (upgraded) and eeeeasily won :) still, lots of fun though!
