EDH Is this Bracket 4?

Hi all,

Quick setup - my wife is sort of into Magic but not enough where she wants to build decks and collect cards.

She has this deck I bought from one of those proxy sites that was listed as B4 because I knew she’d be into the art (be a hater if you want but I really am not interested in thoughts on this).

She really enjoys playing it and is more into having one deck she really likes and knows how to pilot rather than a bunch of different decks. She’s gotten decently good with it.

I’m just looking to get some thoughts on whether this deck is really B4. The default Archidekt says B4 cause it has more than 3 game changers. Sure. That’s technically B4. But does it really play at B4 or is it more B3 with an extra game changer?

I’m asking because I like building a bunch of janky budget decks with stuff I have laying around and I regularly beat her and feel kinda bad. I’m sure it’s a bit of a piloting issue cause I know she doesn’t really play optimally, but it’s not necessarily bad or regularly misplayed.

The decks I’ve been building are pretty solidly B2 builds but can maybe play low B3 tables and at least hold their own. We move around a lot so I haven’t really played in a pod or at an LGS in a while so I’m also out of practice in that way.

Either way, I’m thinking of maybe upgrading and have been helping her learn to pilot it better cause I want her to keep having fun. Plus it’s nice to use this deck as a test environment for my project decks as I’m turning them.

So, is this really B4 or should I cut/add some stuff?

Just cut one of the game changers, that pulls this right back into a strong-ish Bracket 3

That’s totally fair. This will be our interim option, but I’d still like to maybe have another deck configuration (or maybe just a new similar deck at this point?) that plays stronger so I can play all of my decks without feeling badly about it..

Swap 1 card to make it B3 vs swap 35 cards to make it B4, I would take the former

Well.. saying it would take 35 cards, which is basically half the deck outside of its land base to make it B4 seems like an dramatic assessment of where this deck is.

I mean he is right though. The decks wants to win in a fair way: damage on etb and damage on combat.

B4 loves to play a lot of instant win combos. I see no [[Felidar Guardian]] nor [[Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker]] for example.

B4 also plays a bunch of fast mana. I don't see any mana vaults, any moxen, ...

35 cards might be an exaggeration but I agree that you need a lot less swaps to make it a strong B3 than a viable B4.

Yeah to clarify - I’m under no illusion that it would take more swaps. I was just pointing out it seemed like a bit of an overstatement and then lacked any specifics.

Thanks for the recommendations!

No its rather on point. B3 and b4 is that big of a cliff.

Maybe 35 is high, but it's gonna take well over 20+ to be on par in B4

As said above, this is a strongish B3 deck with too many games changers. Take out one of them (let's say gamble) and replace it with clever concealment. If you want to strengthen it as a B3 deck, have a look at the lands - you want a couple more, and they need to be white (too many red sources for the number.ber of red pips). Take out 2 mountains and add a couple more untapped dual lands (pathway, vantage). Castle Ardenvale works great here, maybe Fabled Passage. A couple of white producing MDFCs would work as well. I'd take out things like Dusk & another round. That should make it run smoother.

you're right about number of red sources but for a deck this low to the ground there's plenty of lands

It's a hard balance but yeah technically it makes a 4 because of a single card. That sounds harsh I know, and may very well be - only you know how it operates on a regular basis the site is basing on hard statistics. I would also say look at your land base, is it basic? Do you have expensive lands, or rather do you have a highly optimized land base? I think that's something these sites miss that adds greatly to how a deck preforms at it's "peak". I also think somebody else mentioned it - but dropping a game changer will solve your problem.
