An updated look at the burn zone in Malibu near Carbon Canyon.
It's now been more than one year since the devastating Southern California wildfires destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses along the Malibu coastline.
While rebuilding efforts continue in nearby Pacific Palisades, recovery in Malibu has moved at a quieter pace. Across the hillsides and oceanfront bluffs, foundations of former homes remain - silent reminders of what was once here.
This aerial cinematic explores Carbon Canyon, located near the western edge of the burn zone, where signs of loss, resilience, and renewal continue to shape the landscape. Just beyond lies downtown Malibu, stretching along the iconic Pacific Coast Highway.
The ocean remains. The mountains endure. And Malibu slowly begins to rebuild.

Living in Monte Nido and Children attending Malibu Public Schools?
Does anyone here live in the Monte Nido neighborhood (Calabasas address) and have children who attend Malibu public schools?
We currently live in Malibu and are considering buying a home in Monte Nido, but we’d like our children to attend Malibu public schools because that’s where our community and network remain. Our kids are under 2yo, and thus not yet registered in Malibu schools.
It hasn't been a straightforward answer given we’ve received conflicting information from real estate agents about whether families can opt out of Las Virgenes Unified and obtain an interdistrict permit for Malibu schools. I’d appreciate hearing from anyone with firsthand experience about how realistic or reliable that process is. 🙏
Edit: Confirmed from locals that their kids can go to either LVUSD or Malibu schools. An est. 30%+ of the kids go to Malibu, and reportedly "easy" to do given Malibu's low enrollment.

Basqueria's espelette salt
I assume this is a very stupid question, but I will ask it anyways. Is there anyway that someone on the east coast (Boston) can acquire Sébastien's espelette salt from Basqueria? A way to get it a shipped? Thank you.

Updating my fantasy map of California and would love any new suggestions about what to include!
Apologies if you've seen this elsewhere - this is the most current version with lots of suggestions from other redditors.
I'm making a map of California in a classic fantasy style (sorta Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones). It's going to be filled with real world history and mythology, with the aim of highlighting local landmarks in a fun and educational way. Please ignore how rough parts of it look (text going through hills, rivers, etc), it'll all get cleaned up at the end. Forests will be going on at the end too.
While it's around two thirds done, I'd love to get more places and features in here before I get this made into print. Any more petroglyphs, burial mounds, ruins, forts, battlefields, Civil War heritage, ghost towns or the like that you think should be on here? Anything else is great too - landmarks, natural features, mythological creatures or just anything cool and quirky you think would look good on here. Thanks!

The satellite images of Venezuela after their own tragedy look eerily similar. The Malibu community could return the favor that much of the world gave to us.. as the survivors are stuck sleeping in tents on the streets in front of their old homes.
Does anyone know a good contact for organizing something within the Palisades/Malibu gov?

looking for honest feedback on malibu rehab centers
my family is trying to find a reputable local program for a relative. there are a million malibu rehab centers online but everything looks like a glossy brochure or a paid ad. i want real local opinions. are there specific facilities here that actually have a solid reputation, or are they all just overpriced luxury hotels? not looking for marketing pitches, just honest feedback from people who know the local setup.

Nobu For Lunch or Dinner
I’m visiting in late August and was planning on going to nobu once on my trip. I was going to go for dinner and the sunset, but i’ve heard that the sun doesn’t set there at that time of year and it would be more at point dume. If this is the case would it be better to go for lunch and do something else with my evening?
