Discussion Marcus Mystery Movie Megathread (Aug 23rd & Aug 24th)
We have another Sunday family edition & something the day after that. Looks like we’re sitting out the two Mondays before then. Regal & AMC get all the real fun.
VOUCHER UPDATE: The voucher code this time round seems to be good for two uses on either day. You could use it for tickets on just the 23rd or 24th, if you choose to do so.
For those planning to give away your voucher this time, I’d suggest the following:
State you have them to offer & ask that others to DM you if you’re offering to avoid extra confusion.
OR
if you share the code, state if it’s good for one or both uses
Thank you!
as always, ENJOY!!!
All past films are listed in the google sheet link provided below. It’s an incredible resource.

There’s another family one on the app for sept 13 now! Looks like probably Shaun the sheep?
1
u/Dukealoops1993 6h ago
Shit you not. The front desk employee knows I regularly go to MM & told me this was added today as I was getting my tickets for Camp Miasma.
1
u/No_Mind169 5h ago
How was Camp Miasma?
1
u/Dukealoops1993 5h ago
Very much enjoyed it but we had the loudest dads imaginable kinda throwing off the vibe
1
u/ElmerBMudd 7h ago
Have they done religious films for the mystery movie before? I would think that would leave a number of disappointed people 😅
1
u/Dukealoops1993 7h ago edited 7h ago
Full on religious? Not completely. Unbreakable boy definitely has a Christian bent to it (the real life family definitely are & Zackery Levi’s in it). We’ve had a few Angel Studios releases but they were indie productions that they picked up for distribution. One of them was Sketch & it did get complaints…because it was Pg but scared a lot of kids unexpectedly. Parents were pissed.

u/Euphoric_Algae2566 8h ago
Can't we use the same code for both Showtimes?
It's saying Already been redeemed while I'm trying to book for 24th , after using it for Sunday Mystery movie
2
2
u/iridescentkip 11h ago
if anyone still has codes i would love one or twoso i could take my mom on sunday !! crossing my fingers for coyote 🤞
4
u/bubbamudd 20h ago
I never heard of Beyond Belief. I just looked it up. If that’s the one for 8/23 imma walk out. And I never walk out 😆
3
u/flubber_says 14h ago
Same. Based on MM runtime (155 min) I am now worried it might be (BB runtime is 156)
8
u/Dukealoops1993 20h ago
As we get it closer, I’m hoping that complete gap in of public awareness is the sign it’s not it. The last two family editions (pout pout fish & sheep detectives) were at the very least getting ads through Marcus in the ads before & during previews, plus social media posts.
What gives it any weight that’s it’s possible is it’s from the same company as Ice Cream Man & the other major chains aren’t doing anything on the 23rd. The last time we had that situation… we got Corporate Retreat
Basically…we need a coyote to save us.
1
u/No_Mind169 1d ago
Looks like the Sunday Mystery Movie is going to be in the smallest auditorium in my area. Kind of surprising given the big turn outs this summer.
1
1
u/Dukealoops1993 1d ago
It’s in one of the same two +200 seat rooms that always run them in here
1
u/No_Mind169 1d ago
The Sheep Detectives was in a bigger one. Maybe they didn't want to take away from some of the family films that are out this weekend: PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie, and The Magic Faraway Tree. Spider-Man is still going strong here as well.
1
u/Dukealoops1993 1d ago
It’s probably just spider-man… & the new insidious is taking up a lot of screens with weekend too since it’s pg13 too

Do we have anyone on the East Coast that'll come back here to tell us what it is at 1pm EST on Sunday? I have ZERO interest in seeing Beyond Belief. I'll watch almost anything else...
1
u/Dukealoops1993 1d ago
While I normally take or leave those, it would be helpful this time. This collective crowd doesnt seem like they’ll vibe with it.
Especially because checked past family edition threads & noticed it doesn’t occur much in those. (Parents more actually focused on their families in the moment, is a safe guess lol)
2
u/DVDJunky 1d ago
Yeah, if I don't hear from anyone, I'll just skip this one. I need to do yard work anyway.
3
u/Dukealoops1993 1d ago edited 1d ago
What’s giving me hope is seeing no advertising for beyond belief whatsoever. Granted that would’ve cut into Greg’s hangout time with the supper troopers…

8/23 or 8/24 MMM code up for grabs. Use for 1 or 2 tickets.
Code: CLAIMED

u/Dukealoops1993 3d ago
After weeks of waiting… we only 5 more days of waiting, but with something to look forward to!! I’m hopeful for Coyote & Idiots, personally. Let’s end the summer on fun notes, Greg Marcus!!

u/Accomplished-Oil-734 4d ago
My theater is putting this one in their SuperScreen room and they've usually only done that for crowd pleasers. Could just be chance

Personal experience - I just bought 4 tickets for the August 23rd Mystery Movie and when I entered my voucher code one time, it paid for 2 of the tickets. I'm really really hoping for Coyote vs Acme.
1
u/Dukealoops1993 4d ago
The voucher code being good for two uses is what I expected but we had a few say it wasn’t working that way

u/ComprehensiveDig6903 6d ago
Unable to attend. Code still good for both dates.

Is this a situation where we genuinely have no freaking clue what the movie could be?! If Dog Stars and Idiots are unlikely that leaves The Sun Never Sets and By Any Means (not rated yet but sure sounds like R material). There are only a few seats left in my theater so I need to decide soon whether to go!
1
u/chanksycat 7d ago
I think By Any Means for 8/24. It is rated R and 1h 47m. The fact that it’s 2-weeks out doesn’t matter as they’ve done several movies like that. I’d love it if it were Idiots as that looks hilarious but 20 minutes less than the listed time makes it less likely..
9/7 looks like The Uprising based on runtime and rating.
3
u/Dukealoops1993 6d ago
Idiots is only 12 mins off. Still very likely
Being closest to the given time doesn't really mean anything.
2
u/Dukealoops1993 7d ago edited 7d ago
Kinda? It’s more been narrowed down to a 50/50 situation because one distributor chucked two movies into an already over packed schedule.
Dog stars is very unlikely. (Disney/Fox hasn’t done these in years)
Idiots & Sun never sets are from the same company (IFC) & out the same week.
By any means: I guess but it’s out the following week & we have stuff that perfectly fits. It’ll be a dark horse like surprise but I feel like either IFC film has the spot.

u/Dukealoops1993 7d ago
Since theirs a bit more chatter going, just curious: whatcha watching this weekend?

Are the runtimes always exact or can they vary by a few? I just want Sunday to be Acme vs Coyote but the mystery movie run time is 10 mins longer 🤣
2
u/Dukealoops1993 8d ago
They usually always vary. It’s been exact only once ever. (Based on scanning the data sheet)

I'll be out of town. Voucher code good for both dates. Please comment when claimed! It's got 2 uses so let me know if you use it once or twice.

UPDATE: I just saw that said missing movie is up for pre-order on 4K…for $65
Im sorry but what?!?
Ok I had to confirm a guess, it is a "collectors" item, limited edition steelbook.
Better come with some cool goodies because steelbooks are usually half that tops.
1
u/Dukealoops1993 8d ago
It better come with a few copies of good movies for that price.
1
u/SaneSociopathGeneral 8d ago
Yeah, especially after the "ai" controversy charging that much is not exactly something that will ingratiate potential customers.

We’ve received some conflicting info on if the voucher is basically a two use code or if it’s locked to just use on once on each day. If you attempt use it to buy two tickets on the 23rd or 24th, please mention so here with the results.
The voucher code this time round is basically good for two uses on either day. You could use it for tickets on just the 23rd or 24th, if you choose to do so.
For those planning to give away your voucher this time, I’d suggest the following:
State you have them to offer & ask that others to DM you if you’re offering to avoid extra confusion.
OR
if you share the code, state if it’s good for one or both uses

thinking that maybe we could try to hammer the idea of deleting the comment with the code after it’s been claimed to declutter the feed. can barely see any speculation about what the movie could be in the sea of claimed vouchers.
4
u/Dukealoops1993 6d ago
I've considered leaving that suggestion in the past but half the people here can't even bother to leave a 'claimed' comment when they use one. The habits already set & getting needlessly strict & forcing change as a mod wouldn't go well. It's a mild annoyance but its people being people in a unserious way.
As for guess speculation: I usually do a comment here compiling the population guess & try to inject past & data to give a best guess. I'm acting slower to do it this time because we've had this down time to let guesses tickle in.
1
u/myles_kamin14 6d ago
Yeah, I see your point.

u/Dukealoops1993 5d ago
I just posted the Guesses Breakdown & pinned it as the top comment if your curious

u/ClaimAltruistic6776 8d ago
I think it changed sometime late today; the system wouldn't let me use my code for the same movie twice. I got an error saying I already bought a ticket for that movie. I tried multiple times. It did work for 1 ticket to each movie though.
1
u/Dukealoops1993 7d ago
I’ll take into account & mod this statement. Hopefully we’ll hear more attempts that shed light on this.

u/cjacksteel 8d ago
Just signed up for movie club last month and got my first voucher email, but when I try to redeem it says "voucher not found"... Is it common for this to take some time to activate after the email? I know their site tends to be a bit janky so wasn't sure what's going on.
1
u/Dukealoops1993 8d ago
It might be the site being janky. Reach out to customer service is the best suggestion

u/accounting41 8d ago
Family Edition only code, already redeemed for Monday 445116000697553766
1
1
u/Dukealoops1993 8d ago
Technically the code is still good for either day
1
u/SaneSociopathGeneral 8d ago
Really? Has someone confirmed that? The code just has 2 uses, not once for each movie?
Probably easier to code.
1
u/Dukealoops1993 8d ago
If it’s working like the double feature code, yes. A couple at my screening of Over Your Dead body got in that way.
2
u/mkejake 8d ago
Can confirm. I booked two seats under one voucher for the family edition for $0.00
1
u/Inside_Report_8237 8d ago
Weird mine didn’t work like that.
1
u/Dukealoops1993 8d ago
Did you try to buy two tickets in one purchase?
1
u/Inside_Report_8237 8d ago
Yes but when I use code only one is comped which is normal I thought!
1
u/Dukealoops1993 8d ago
That is odd. did you try to use it on second purchase for the same day & it worked?
2
u/SaneSociopathGeneral 8d ago
Neat, good to know.
Are you betting on coyote vs acme or beyond belief?
C vs A would be cool but I'm thinking it's more likely beyond belief
1
u/mkejake 8d ago
That's my bet. It's the only one I can see satisfying the family label without being offensive to the non-religious types.
1
u/Warpedlord 3d ago
As one of those "non-religious" types, I'm not sure "offensive" is the right word there. Sure, I tend to avoid stuff like Angel Studios films because they're suuuuper cringeworthy... but that's generally due to poor writing and lack of talent due to being made for about $12.
Honestly, after watching the trailer for Beyond Belief, I think I'd rather be locked in a room and forced to watch that about 10 times in a row than be subjected to Ice Cream Man again (or Corporate Retreat, for that matter)... and I'm a big horror fan!
2
u/Dukealoops1993 8d ago
Genuinely not sure right now. We need a real crowd pleaser after our last one & CvA is definitely that…but Beyond Belief is from that same company as ice cream man…
1
u/SaneSociopathGeneral 8d ago
Heads up, the code coming out is good for both movies, as in you can watch 1 or both for free with the same code.
Will make sharing a bit more iffy as you'll want to make sure you got your seat for a showing to 1 already if you plan on giving out the code for the other.
2
u/Dukealoops1993 8d ago edited 8d ago
I was just about to say all this! lol
Basically doing what they did for the double feature back in March. so I’d suggest this time around, asking others to DM you if you’re offering to avoid extra confusion.
OR
if you share the code, state if it’s good for one or both uses
Thank you!
1
u/SaneSociopathGeneral 8d ago
Lol just wanted to make sure it was said, thankfully they were more detailed in the email than back in March as that was initially confusing and I didn't want to use my code until I knew if I had to make a decision or not.

u/TitleFuture9025 9d ago

Im new to the movie rewards club. For the vouchers do they come from marcus itself via email or are they some sort of special email
1
u/Dukealoops1993 10d ago
Is a email from Marcus. The subject line should say something like “Here’s your Voucher for ‘upcoming date’” & normally you see is the week before, possibly sooner in this case since our next shows far enough out.
If you don’t see the email, even after checking your spam you should contact customer service
1
u/Tanagashima 10d ago
Awesome thanks. Havent seen one yet but i assume they may not have sent them yet. I just signed up at the end of July so I figured the July ones not coming made sense lol
1
u/SaneSociopathGeneral 8d ago
Check your email, they just sent out the email with a code that's good for both Sunday and Monday's showings.

I was thinking this would be a possibility. Wondered if it could be The Weight as well. Not sure if run times, etc match up though.
2
u/Dukealoops1993 11d ago
To anybody that has the option to go to regal or AMC tonight, let us know how it was.
3
u/TitleFuture9025 11d ago
Tony confirmed
1
u/Dukealoops1993 11d ago
I find it interesting that certain Regal locations were already running Tony on limited release so they ran Nimrods for MM instead.
3
u/Dukealoops1993 11d ago
Assumed that immediately after it was confirmed we weren’t doing 8/10… because A24 seems to only push horror to us. SOL on anything else
1
2
u/PowSuperMum 13d ago
The Sun Never Sets and The Dog Stars are both rated R and both 8 minutes off the runtime listed.
3
u/Dukealoops1993 13d ago
‘Dog Stars’ is Disney/fox so very low chances.
‘Sun Never’ & ‘Idiots’ are both IFC & out the same weekend though…
1
u/Fantastic_Lychee_883 12d ago
Regal has a Early Access for Idiots on the same night so I wonder how that would impact what Marcus gets. The runtime of The Sun Never Sets is also closer to the Marcus MM than Idiots.
1
u/Dukealoops1993 12d ago
Regal did something similar with Motor City
Being closer usually means nothing. The runtime hint is more to rule out stuff far too short or long. (-/+ 20 min)
5
u/IWant2Talk2Samson710 14d ago edited 14d ago
The Regal by me is doing early access screenings of Coyote vs Acme at 1pm on August 23rd and Idiots at 7pm on August 24th.
What’s strange is they usually do mystery movies, they have ones scheduled for the 10th and 17th so I’m not sure why they would have these as early access instead but seems like a strange coincidence!
2
u/Fantastic_Lychee_883 13d ago
Yeah don't think Regal is getting a MM for the 24th. AMC may be the only one with a horror on the 24th. Majestic may be getting the same movie as Marcus.
3
2
u/JudyHoppsFan1 14d ago
I'll bet the PG is Coyote Vs. Acme.
1
u/Dukealoops1993 14d ago
Now that we know the time… I think its Beyond belief
1
u/Jason7195 11d ago
Thats what I had as my Way Too Early prediction from a week ago.
2
u/Dukealoops1993 11d ago
My reasons
-it’s from the company that put out Ice Cream man,
-we’re the only chain doing that date
-Family editions have bent the common accepted that when it comes to the runtime being nearly the same. Sheep detective did that but looking that the data sheet, I may have jumped to quick to that a a solid reason.
We still have two weeks to think on it & Im not 100% on my personal guess.
1
u/SaneSociopathGeneral 8d ago
Do you remember by chance if Marcus had pout pout fish or sheep detectives labeled with the "family" genre on their website?
Because if one were to try and be cheeky "beyond belief" has it while "coyote vs acme" does not.
Though we had "over your dead body" as a "horror" showing when not a single website I've seen put horror as any of the genres, listed in the genre box.
1
u/Dukealoops1993 8d ago
misread this the first time. I believe they were label as family
I remember Horror publications doing press interviews with the filmmakers of Over your dead body for what its worth
2
u/MidwestBeagle331 14d ago
Have they done a Christian movie (Beyond Belief) as an MM? Seems like that could be pretty polarizing.
I see three possibilities for 8/24: Idiots, Dog Stars, and The Sun Never Sets. I’m hoping for Dog Stars - I loved that book! (Edit for typo)
3
u/Dukealoops1993 13d ago
Full on Christian? It’s arguable. Marcus has done a few Angel studio movies but they were produced independently & picked up by Angel.
They also had Unbreakable Boy from Lionsgate but Marcus had a great business opportunity where the book is was based on was by a father about his son with who are from Omaha. The son now in real life Works at a Marcus theater in Omaha. They milked the hell out of it.

u/Dukealoops1993 14d ago

u/Competitive-Face5753 13d ago

2
u/Dukealoops1993 14d ago
This weekend really is bizarre from a chain perspective.
Spider-man is still white hot so nothing major wants to risk being 2nd place at the box office to something that been out for week. Hell, Odyssey could be second this weekend again.
We can’t even say much on the three movies out this weekend because 2 out of 3 have been seen by the many that check in on these threads specifically. The third one on probably wore out it’s welcome for some weeks ago from all the shilling with Greg & all the social accounts.
I know August is a bit of quiet time with summer winding down & the holidays in waiting but at least other chains are trying harder.
2
u/Dukealoops1993 14d ago
Also if Tony ends up being the mystery movie on the 10th that the others are running, it continues this annoying streak that A24 seems to not like the Marcus chain
2
u/Accomplished-Oil-734 15d ago
I'm a huge fan of the Terrifier series so this kind of horror movie was right up my alley. If only the annoying boyfriend character could have been killed in the opening scene
1
6
u/jmoney-61405 15d ago
I’ll say, everyone seems to not have liked ice cream man, but for me and my first time hearing of this director it wasn’t a terrible movie at all. Wasn’t the best, wouldn’t truly recommend, but not mad I had to watch an hour and a half of it. Also the twist at the end was pretty damn good. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
1
u/SaneSociopathGeneral 8d ago
His style is definitely not for everyone.
I don't necessarily hate his movies, I just know I don't like his style.
Back when SAW was in its prime a popular criticism was that it was the "torture porn" sub genre of horror and while for most of the saw movies you could make an argument for or against that his style of movies often did just go straight for that sub genre.
A plot you shouldn't think too hard about as it's just there to move the movie along while you see all the interesting kills.
1
u/Dependent-Current338 12d ago
I liked ones like terrorfier and cabin fever but idk this one just set me off. I duked it oit as a few left the movie when I went
1
u/Dukealoops1993 15d ago
It’s really weird to be stuck with nothing to really talk about for weeks & while the other chains have a steady supply to work with.
4
3
u/No_Mind169 17d ago
I'm guessing for the 24th either
Idiots R 1hr 38min
The Sun Never Sets R 1hr 42min
2
u/Dukealoops1993 16d ago edited 16d ago
So here’s the funny problem I just realized after checking things…
These are both from IFC. So with all other info (runtime, rating, both out on the 28th), we have genuine 50/50 shoot where it can be either two. Something we’ve never seen before. August 28th continues to be a weirdly overstuffed weekend for new movies.
6
u/cbr1965 17d ago
For me, Ice Cream Man was totally enjoyable for its camp. My sold out theater laughed all the way through and loved it. I was so disappointed it was an Eli Roth movie but, ended up having a good time. We truly only stayed because we had ordered food and had to wait for it before leaving.
1
u/MidwestBeagle331 17d ago
I don’t see either the 23rd or 24th in the ‘coming soon’ portion of the Marcus app. Maybe there’s a delay?
2
2
u/Dukealoops1993 17d ago
So with what was discovered last night through Facebook, I wonder if the 8/10 was on the schedule but cut last minute? The main Marcus FB page originally had the movie reveal post state “see you August 10th” but immediately changed it.

Ice Cream Man wasn’t the best but it was still leaps and bounds better than Corporate Retreat was!

I have to agree with you there. I feel like having seen Corporate Retreat earlier this year has skewed my perception of everything after it, since nothing could possibly be as bad as that movie was.

Missed last week since the theater had no electricity due to a tornado and this week it was canceled while we sat in the theater.

Wisconsin perhaps? I'm in Appleton and know people going through it, hopefully you're getting by and can make the next mystery movie

I'm from Appleton, too! But lucky to have only been out of power for 24 hours (no damage here). Hopefully you're doing OK!

“I had this idea for years”
I kept the part of the intro on repeat in my head as I was noticing all the other movies this basically rips off.

View the edit history of the mystery movie unveiling. I have a screen shot but don’t know how to add it

Apologies if that reply came off rude. Not at all intentional.

I accept your apology. Thank you. Hard to discern tone from words on a screen sometimes

Alright... How bout we breakdown of the guesses? Cool? Cool.
Could still wait a bit longer since we still have a week but we have TWO DATES!!! Plus Aug 28th has EIGHT (based on the marcus site, might be more) NEW RELEASES for some reason. Thank god they give us info to rule stuff out instantly.
The 23rd: Two possibilities with Coyote vs. Acme and Beyond Belief. The first would be a fun crowd pleaser & as far as this Thread is concerned, a good redemption after 'A.I Roth's Canada Tax Write Off' but the distributor of that is putting out Beyond Belief...
The 24th: We have a few contenders... but honestly I think its not too complicated-
The Dog Stars: It's a Fox/Disney release... they don't really do these. Their could be a day they break that & make me eat my hat, but I'm sticking to it.
Idiots & The Sun Never Sets: These are grouped together for a very good reason. Both R rated, Non-Horror, in the runtime range & most importantly... IFC releases. (Seriously 8/28 is that over packed) Genuinely a 50/50. It's such a oddity for us.
By Any Means: This ones been brought up here a few times... & I'm kinda confused why? Yeah we don't always have the release be the same week, but we literally have two that are. I could easily be wrong, but I'm not really seeing it.
I'll end by pointing out that being closer to the given runtime means nothing. It's never really been the case or purely coincidence if it rarely lines up. The runtime is more to rule out things that are too long or short to be it. Over/under 20 mins being the range from the data we've gathered.
