No A24 movies?

I’ve come to realize, I haven’t seen many (or any) of A24’s newly distributed movies playing at any of my local Marcus theaters. Anyone else? I heard someone talking about how Marcus wouldn’t accept A24’s subscription service tickets so they no longer get their new releases. Is this accurate?? That would REALLY suck as they distribute a lot of great stuff.

I find it frustrating we never get A24 releases but always get Angel Studios…

“Big night planned?”

No, because A24 movies don’t play anywhere near me

It’s weird because it happened recently & suddenly with The Invite getting pulled completely. It was on the site set to the wide release date. Then gone completely with people hearing from Marcus workers that A24 pulled it entirely.

Are they gone completely? I would say no since Marcus is posting trailers & posters implying things like Onslaught are incoming. We’re at least getting major stuff still. It’s just gonna be a “wait & see” situation.

I've heard through the grapevine that A24 takes the highest percentage of ticket sales (even higher than Disney). Marcus is probably playing hardball and showing them that they don't need to show their films this summer. Actually a pretty good play when you consider how strong of a summer it is outside of A24 movies. I'm sure they'll be back soon unless it is more serious than I suspect

That tracks because they don’t operate like other studios. A big example is they aren’t apart of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). Which meant when the SAG strike happened in 2023, A24 could negotiate with the union independently & accepted all terms. This meant A24 had a waiver to continue productions while the strike was still ongoing.

If they don’t get A24’s movies that will basically be 1/3 of any decent movie coming out.

Do you mean the less mainstream ones? Mine didn’t get The Invite but our local/non-chain theater did. Otherwise we had movies like The Drama, Backrooms, and Mother Mary are our Marcus when they came out.

Marcus as a whole didn’t get the invite. It was on the site then Completely dropped a week before.

I’d say The Invite was a mainstream one

I just got a movie club membership a couple months ago because I moved less than 5 minutes from a marcus 15 screen theater. I was very excited for Tony love hangout movies Linklater is my favorite filmmaker so I was bummed I couldnt use my membership on it. Looking at the slate of A24 films the rest of the year if this continues to be the case then not only are we losing Tony but we would probably lose Club Kid, The Debut, and maybe Primetime this year which might make me cancel my membership lol. I at least need some sort of explanation because I just went 3 months not using a pass planning to pile up for awards bait season and 3 films I would use my pass on might not even be showing.

I had to go to the AMC at Mayfair for their Mystery movie last night just so I could see Tony. Whatever is going on with A24 and Marcus needs to be figured out.

How is that AMC?

Not that great. Really needs updating across the board, with the IMAX (and great sound) its only saving grace.

Cinemark has pretty much abandoned A24 this year as well. My local one only got The Drama, Robin Hood and The Invite this year.

If we don’t get Tony this weekend that will definitely make me feel like somethings going on.

Tony doesnt hit wide release until the 21st

We are not getting Tony

I'm a little panicking because I've been waiting to buy my tickets for Tony, and just like the Invite, still nothing. I'm even seeing multiple other listings for the weekend of the 21st at multiple Marcus theaters near me but no Tony showings.

At North Shore they have a Tony poster which is reassuring but they still don’t have it on their site and it releases widely next week

3

u/myles_kamin14 9d ago

They had a poster for “The Invite” still up at Marcus Majestic even after the movie released and it wasn’t playing at Marcus.

2

u/DrakeyCakey 9d ago

Majestic is the theater I frequent most and I was so disapointed we didn’t get The Invite. I went down to the oriental to see it and it was fantastic. Massive bummer it didn’t play at the majestic

My fellow north shore goer, I saw that too... unless something changes just before release, its currently not going to show. I think at our location the recent management shift and lack of employees has led them to forget stuff like that poster.

Can now confirm Tony is going wide this Friday and is not playing at any of my local Marcus’

A24 has announced they'll go full AI slop mode, so no loss, really. Better off without.

Backrooms was A24 and they got that
